People who think Skyrim looks bad should look at other games released this year.

Like Witcher 2? I assume a hi-res screenshot is unnecessary.

You should've read the rest of his post. Nobody doubts that the Witcher 2 looks better, but it is not an open-world game.

Yes, I completely agree. I pre-ordered Witcher 2 back in December and so far I've only played about 9 or 10 hours. I got bored after arriving in Flotsam and haven't been able to motivate myself to start it up again.

I really dislike the way that all the enemies stop chasing you if you take one or two steps backwards and give you time to heal. Also the inventory system is a little bit weird.

It's a great story, actually I've read the first novel, and I like the art direction of the game, but there is something about the TES games' greater ability to customize your character and just walk around and do whatever the hell you want that feels a lot closer to the roots of pen-and-paper games.

I don't quite feel as free when playing TW2. At some point, however, I'm sure I'll be able to motivate myself to continue playing it. I really enjoyed TW1, especially the part of the game where you must choose between Shani or Triss and your friends drop you off on the woman's doorstep late at night, only to be yelled at while you are in a drunken stupor, barely able to make out who is talking due to the blurry visuals.

The only graphics shown for Skyrim has been x-box 360.

Comparing a top-rated graphical achievement in TW2 to console graphics is a compliment to the 360.

I'm waiting to see pc images. Plus, I can safely bet that Skyrim has at least 10 times more content. Yes, 10 times more content.

I like TW2, however. Just saying how it is.

Has anyone decided what race and type of character they'll first play? I always pick Breton but can't settle on either a hybrid mage/warrior (longsword in one hand and spell casting in the other) or simply go pure thief. Sigh, so many decisions. I want to decide early on simply because I anticipate spending a very long time with one character (around a hundred hours at least).

Argonian rogue/fighter with a bit of destruction magic for me. I'll mostly be using blades and arrows. I wonder if crossbows are returning.

I'm kind of waiting to see the Argonian, Breton, Dunmer and Imperial character design screens, but I'm thinking I'll go with one of the following builds - also the reason why they were arrested crossing the border:

1. Orc Bandit Marauder
Reason for Arrest: Caught attempting to smuggle a mammoth carrying a large quantity of Skooma
Skills: two-handed battle axes, smithing, heavy armor, (nothing else, no alchemy, no spells, no enchanting, no block)

2. Khajit Dual Wield Assassin
Reason for Arrest: framed by the Dark Brotherhood for the murder of the High King of Skyrim
Skills: one-handed weapons, poisons (alchemy), sneak, security, speechcraft (no enchanting, no smithing, no spells)

3. Bosmer Archer/Ranger
Reason for Arrest: caught attempting to smuggle human flesh
Skills: archery, alchemy, speechcraft, sneak, security, light armor (no enchanting, no smithing, no spells) - if there is a survival/ranger skill I will take it

4. Argonian Tribal Shaman
Reason for Arrest: suspected of Necromancy
Skills: Illusion, Alchemy, Enchanting, One-handed axes, staves, Smithing (nothing else)

5. Dunmer or Breton Necromancer
Reason for Arrest: suspected of being a Skooma addict
Skills: Conjuration, Destruction, Restoration, Illusion, Enchanting, Alchemy, (will use one-handed dagger occasionally, but not much)

For my first character, I'm probably picking an Argonian because that was my first character in Oblivion. He will probably be a jack off all trades because I want to test all of the skills at least some, but I want to focus on 2 handed weapons if they're fun.

Even the gameplay demo was on an xbox. Skyrim is a console port though, but PC should have better graphics usually unless they make another one of those corporate decision scenarios and diss the pc market.Hopefully it will be optimized as well meaning good framerates.

I'm definitely going to be a Battlemage type character. Spell in one hand, one handed weapons in another. Of course I'll mix it up, going pure mage or warrior or in certain periods, but that's how it'll be for the most part.

I still cannot decide on race. Leaning Nord, also considering Khajiit and Redguard.

I will be a male this time. I was a female Bosmer in Oblivion.

A Nord warrior with sneaky tendencies when required. Not sure if I'm going for two swords or a sword and sheild or maybe even a two handed sword. Will wait and see what tickles my fancy later on.

I wonder how we'll be able to do executions and finishing moves. I think race and perks will affect it.

There is one dagger perk that causes 10x damage or so.

“Now when you sneak up behind guys, the dagger does something like 10x damage,” says game director Todd Howard. “I don’t know if we’re going to keep that, but you feel like you should be killing the guy if you’ve gotten that close and you have a dagger.”

I really hope, that if you want to be a stealthy character that the only viable weapons are not going to be just daggers. Hopefully there will be sneak attack perks for other weapons as well. Personally i'm more of the short sword wielding type. Here's to hoping.

To be honest, I have no idea whether that perk would be under Sneak or under 1-handed.

There are some other confirmed perks for different types of weapons as well:

2. Sword Crit Damage Perk (One Handed)

3. Axe Bleeding Residual Damage Perk (One Handed)

4. Mace Ignore Enemy DT/DR Perk (One handed)

"For instance, the sword perk increases your chances of landing a critical strike, the axe perk punishes enemies with residual bleeding damage after each blow, and the mace perk ignores armor on your enemies to land more powerful strikes.

7. Bullet Time Bow Perk (Archery)

8. Bow Zoom Perk (Archery) - also mentioned in the same Gamer.no article quote from Todd.

Q: Another thing: when you used the bow before [in the demo] you had a zoom effect, and that time went slower as you would shoot. Are these special abilities?

Todd Howard: . In relation to the Archery system these are two different properties. These are new perks so that you can get different degrees of zoom or bullet time [tidssakking].

I'm going to be a confused turtle, an argonian with double shields.

I'm starting to lose my mind. Bethesda better release some Argonian pics soon.

From the concept art pic, it looks like they have cool helmets, or at least some kind of cool carapace growing out of their cheeks.

It also looks like they have reptile-like feet and humanoid body structure. I also hope they get to wear full helmets or at least Beth will make Beast race-exclusive armor.

Gameplay footage/preview for Skyrim.  Didn't notice anything new but still worth a look. (Edit: For some reason the video doesn't like to load with Firefox.  Plays fine with Google Chrome).

I'm always an Argonian, but I'd like to try a male Orc and maybe a female Human because the models don't look horrible anymore.

New Skyrim article - very detailed walkthrough of E3 demo.

Setting out in Skyrim - Edge Magazine

Great read!

Here are some quotes I found interesting:

More details on the directional attacks mentioned in Gamer.no Norwegian article
Once again, the direction of movement modifies action, so that he can control the angle of his slashing blade. It’s a violently kinetic battle, the collision of blade and shield more acutely felt than in Oblivion, shield barges creating Havok-enhanced stumbles and successful blows splashing your weapon with gore.

Funny quote
Blessedly, this means that players will no longer have to spend the entire game jumping in order to more quickly propel these stats – although we will shed a tear for our beloved hero, Tubsy the cat-man, and his game-breaking ability to leap out of Oblivion’s levels.

On the possibility of some economy details changing before the final release version
“[Simulated economies are] always a good idea on paper,” says Howard. “We have lumber mills there, we have mines and smelters for iron – that affects weapons. Then we have farms – that affects food and ingredients which then affect alchemy. We have all that working, but we haven’t found the gameplay sweet spot. We’re still messing with that.”

Only dubbed regional versions will be French, German, Italian and Castillian Spanish (not Latin American)
So we’re not really limited by the physical media as much as how long it takes to record it. And the issue actually becomes… you know we’re doing the games in five major languages? So the amount of time it takes to record in English and French and German and Italian and Spanish – it’s a pretty major undertaking.”

The reason why the bandit in Bleak Falls Barrow didn't react in E3 footage
“Fallout 3 had multiple states of alert and danger,” says Howard as he sneaks closer, drawing his bow. “We have those states, but they don’t jump in and out of them right away. The Eye symbol [replacing the reticule as in Oblivion] is showing you that they’re moving from one state to another, and your sneak skill affects how fast. We give you time to adjust to the fact that the thing you’re doing is wrong, to realise you’re moving into the light.”

2 unique puzzles in Bleak Falls Barrow that must be solved by looking at inventory items (not only the Golden Claw puzzle but another one by the entrance)
Had Howard not killed him, however, the thief would have found no happier fate – instead being butchered by a booby-trapped puzzle in the following chamber, giving the player a hint as to how not to solve it. It’s a simple symbol-matching puzzle, rotating blocks to match those depicted elsewhere, but it is proof that Bethesda is attempting to seed its dungeons with greater personality and variety beyond their monsters.

Are Dragon Priests controlled by Dragons?
Having taken care of the priest, however, Howard must still face his master – outside, the dragon that harried our ascent to the barrow is still to be seen, circling in the sky.

The pursuit of more dragon shouts compels the player to advance in the Main Quest
Learning the Shouts really ties into the main quest, so now you instantly see that not only is there a story reason, there is a power gameplay reason. In Oblivion and Fallout there isn’t really a power reason to do the main quest. Well, here with the Shouts you’re like: ‘Well, those are fun, I’m going to become more of a , so I’m going to do this questline.’”

Think I'll go with a W/R Imperial that uses either a two handed weapon, or Long sword with a short sword. Sneaks around but also runs up and beats the **** out of things.

Skyrim will be taking place 200 years after oblivion so I guess I won't be able to "import" my argonian character in terms of roleplaying. What is the lifespan of argonians, anyway?
