Potions and poisons. You can most likely create some of the most statistically powerful potions and poisons possible. Even more so if you wear enchanted items that layer Alchemy skill. You can make and carry around potions of various sorts, and their statistics will be very good. You can apply poison to your weapons, where a strike with a weapon will be highly concentrated in the specific poison of your choosing.

Even as a mage, I focused on alchemy solidly, while not absolutely. Alchemy is invaluable.

Thanks, this is my first time using Alchemy, I have everything ready to create the best poisons and potions.

naughty99 wrote...

Don't forget poisons!  A lot of fun for playing an assassin or thief character. You can even reverse pickpock to poison people, and some mods let you poison their food.

Also, Alchemy experimentation is a really fun mini-game. Collect a whole bunch of ingredients, then start making random potions using three different ingredients at a time. You will learn a lot of new effects, and sometimes you make cool new potions or poisons with interesting results. This is awesome to do with mods that add more alchemical ingredients to the game, like Real Wildlife.

Well I did try using the reverse pickpocket thing but my damage health poisons don't do much damage at all and there's only 1 jarrin root and I can't get more because I don't play on PC plus I don't like the Dark Brotherhood so I doubt I'll join them with this character. My Argonian has a focus in Destruction, Illusion, one handed and sneak. Any recommendations as to what I should craft?

Poisons with effects like frenzy, fear, paralysis, damage health, damage magicka, weakness to poison, weakness to magic, would certainly go well with your one-handed weapons. Over time, you can improve your Alchemy a lot and your poisons will be much stronger. Also, of course, potions of invisibility, fortify destruction, fortify illusion, fortify magicka, fortify sneak, fortify one-handed, etc., will be helpful

Thanks I'll search for the ingredients for each as for my skill

I highly, highly recommend not to look up the ingredients.

IMO that takes away all the fun of alchemy. It's much more fun to experiment and make random potions combining three different ingredients, for which you don't know all the effects. As a result, you sometimes make cool stuff and sometimes your potion fails. When your potion succeeds then the ingredient effects get added to your crafting menu.

Well I meant as in looking for them in the game world. I know some of those potions already, some I really have no clue but I guess I'll try. Besides looking up the ingredients is too much time since there are too many different combinations.

Yes I suppose the way I get ingredients is, I just collect every single alchemy ingredient I see in the world. Then when I'm near an alchemy station at some point, I start mixing up random potions until I use them all up. Eventually I start learning a lot of ingredient effects.

Not sure if you're on PC or not, but there is a mod called Real Wildlife that adds a lot of new kinds animals and monsters to the world, as well as many different new internal organs, each with their own alchemical properties.

I have a question. What exactly can I use alchemy for? I've leveled until 100 and put perks into the skill but I haven't seen much use for it. What are some ways in which I can use it?

Alchemy is a "passive" skill, in that it's not directly utilized in combat or conversation.  However, its indirect benefits are staggeringly powerful.

In short:  you use alchemy to mix ingredients together into potions.  Which you can then consume or sell.

And some of the potions you make can be insanely deadly.  I once made a  damage health posion that does 60 damage and paralyses for 10 seconds.   Basically, such a potion will end any fight.  And there's literally no limit to how many of these potions you can make, since ingredients in the game world respawn over time.   With enough skill in Alchemy, you can make a potion that gives you 60% resistance to 2 elements at the same time for a minute.  This makes  mage or dragon  battles trivial.

And Permanent repercussions:  At 100 alchemy and with the right alchemy perks,  You can make potions that boost your smithing/enchanting by insane levels for a limited time, thus letting you craft weapons and armor that  break the game with their power.  You can then create potions that vastly boost your 1h, 2h, and archery skills, and then drink those potions before a battle, thus allowing you to 1-shot bosses and dragons for the lulz.

Confess-A-Bear wrote...
*Power leveled Smithing to max, made Daedric weapons and Armor. has more potions than he knows what to do with, kills everything fast* lol Silly RPers.

Killing everything fast, eh?   Is that your goal?  If so, then   know this:  Without alchemy, you will never  be able to smith a daedric weapon that does more than, say, 500 damage.  With, Alchemy, however, Crafting weapons that do 1200+ damage, and armor that bestows 1000+ armor ratings is... you know.... easily achievable.

But none of this matters.  As  others mentioned, it all depends on what you consider fun.   Me, personally, After playing Skyrim for 7 months, I've grown to appreciate moderate power over insane-killer-god-mode overpoweredness.  And  therefore, I no longer rely on Alchemy.   Sure, I'll spend some time  brewing potions and selling them for immediate $$$, but that's about it.  I won't, for example, spend perk-points on the Alchemy tree when I'm playing a warrior.

I have a very odd and very annoying bug in Markarth. You know the mountain in the city that has the shrine of Talos entrance on it, and the entrance to the tempel of Dibella? There are pieces of rock where they shouldn't be. Normally there is a hall in the rock with the door to Talos' shrine. Now I can't get there, because there is a freaking rock blocking the way. I also can't get to Dibella's temple, because again the access is blocked by random half rock. I don't have any mods, texture or otherwise that alter Markarth, so I have no clue what could be causing it.

Techless One here....

Taking a wild guess because of my own experience with maps and directionality, but this may simply be a case of trying the incorrect path. There is at least one dead end up there that looks much like another.

If not, try reloading; seems to help in other games with temp obstacles.

Good luck!

Nope no PC, I play on 360, I'll move to the PC eventually because of mods. I guess I will just pick up anything I see, it takes too much time to look where each ingredients are at. I'll just mix everything and then see what happens.

Unfortunately, no, that's not it. I have made endless rounds around that mountain, with no luck. This is the second character I have the problem with, and the oddest part is that I could just access the shrine of Talos when I just went into the city (first time in Markarth for her) but when I exited again, I was locked up between two random pieces of rock, and since then I can't get there anymore. I have posted two screenshots now.

I have never mixed a potion in all my time playing, but do know that an item of Immunity vs Poison, and a meal of various mixed ingredients will yield a fairly sized stock of information for future dabbling.

I had heard about that and all the benefits of enchantment/smithing/alchemy combinations, unfortunately my current characters don't have those 3 skils maxed, I either have enchantment/smithing or enchantment/alchemy. I might do it in the future, but I don't know how I'd place perks in all of them and then have enough for other skills.

I would say that if you are an Expert is these three drafting Skills, you might not need many perks, as you have designed a Master Artisan; one that allows their handiwork to do the talking, and leaves the Shouting for the rest.

Yep, in my view, experimenting and mixing up different potions is a big part of the fun of alchemy. It's kind of like a gambling mini-game.:P

If that's how it works then I see no problem, I'll put them to use in one of the 3 new characters I plan to make after Dawnguard is released.

Meh I might would get this or at least Oblivion on PC for mods, but my gfx card is so old that its a 256mb card lol.

Depending on your current setup, it might also require upgrading the power supply, but did you know there are a number of graphics cards available between $100-150 that can run most games at 1080p just fine?

Well my power supply is fine, this PC I have now is pratically brand new. I have four gigs for my hard drive, 750 gb's in ram, all the slots are PCI-E And a pretty decent power supply. Basically I have a while not a sports car by any means, maybe a higher end family car, my engine (GFX) is a V2 at best. Underpowerd and not very useful.

And I'm aware of that. Problem is just getting one.

One the one hand on the local market, those old 256mb cards are still "cutting edge" and they charge roughly 2-3 times the value (60-80 bucks), and absolutly refuse to order newer ones. Part of this is retailer hostility to PC gamers, given a huge number of them were buying games, burning them and returning them for full refunds. So PC gamers are down right hated here in the retail chain.

I always could Order one online, but I have trouble getting stuff for my 360 at times money wise, nevermind a 2nd console. I have other money priorities at the momment as well. And then lastly my address is a problem. I'm not a city dweller, and given how so many shippers just ship however they will, I run into issues of sending it to my house or my PO Box.

Like a number of times I went and told the seller directly to send it by UPS or such, and then the package goes to the post office who doesn't hold on to wrong Address packages like they are required too by law, and in place send them back same day, so if I don't get a notice fast, borked. At the same time when a place has told me it ships by Post Office, I've had a notice left in my box saying "we can't deliever to such and such come to UPS depot etc, etc"  And the local one saddly, and stupidly is only open 90 minutes a day to the public, holds packages only 1-2 days. So if your not there on that day and during those 90 minutes?

Lol Bye!  and some sellers you have to pratically threaten with a court action, just to get a refund or the package resent.

So I'm not risking whats for me a good chunk of money on an item I will have to order, and given local stupidity, there is a chance though slim when dealing with small time sellers who often have the best prices via Amazon, I could not only not get my package, but not my money back as well, considering an Amazon deal has stung me out of 170 bucks before, I don't trust or want to use it.

So untill the newest cards are in the 60 buck range, or unless I Buy a slightly older, but still newer than what I have GFX card, I just could careless about PC gaming. Plus the Screen if I stay at it too long makes my eyes hurt, and its not comfortable on my arms lulz.

In short I don't PC game minus my RTS more out of practicality and reality than any fanboyism. This is a PC hostile Region, with ****** poor customer service.

Hmm... If crossbow quarrels may be crafted, perhaps this means arrows have also been added to the table. And Dragonbone weapons being better than Daedric sounds good to me; finally a reason to finish the Smith tier.

The Wiki site  seems to be saying (at least as I interpret it) that Crossbows will only be avaliable at Fort Dawnguard. Which means what? That they won't be random drops anywhere else in the game, like Bows are?

I don't mind stuff like that.  There have always been weapons which were hard to aquire due to state restrictions/religious taboos/lack of material or ingredients/etc.

As long as the x-bows are worth the trouble to get, that is...

I hope we'll still get to go to the Soul Cairn, find the undead horse, and get the new Shout even if we side with the Dawnguard - I'd imagine we'd have to go there in order to protect the Elder Scroll from Harkon, who will probably send someone to try and get it anyway.

Not sure about how the new shout works, but definitely, yes, you will go to the Soul Cairn either way. I've seen footage of a Dawnguard player wielding a crossbow in the Soul Cairn.

This looks like an unbelievably amazing expansion. Bethesda comes right off of Skyrim and delivers this first? Incredible. I think there is going to be some new things about Elder Scrolls themselves that'll be learned. Let's face it...this individual is attempting to use the Elder Scrolls themselves to permanently end, and I quote, "the tyranny of the sun."

And the hate in which he said sun. He spoke its name with total hatred. Like vampires should.

I wonder if you'll be able to be a vampire lord but disagree with what that Harkon guy wants to do. Two of my characters are vampires but I feed mainly on bad people who deserve it like Maven Black-Briar and Erikur and I don't want to screw up the sun but still want the abilities that come with the vampire lord.

Any money I get is going to Dawnguard... I'll give up going to see Dark Knight Rises if I have to.
