Ok now I'm really pissed off.
Twice tonight the game would crash in such a way where my monitor will not work properly. Meaning I would have to manually turn off my computer with the switch and then turn it back on for my monitor to read my computer. WTF this happened once before with Civilization V and I'm wondering if my computer is going bad or something. Did a recent patch make things worse?

Rockworm503 wrote...

Yeah I was worried it was my graphics card going bad. Not cool. I do NOT have money to replace it at this time. If thats the case playing Skyrim or any high end games are just out of the question :(
I guess I'm playing even more PS3 than I am already.

The kind of crash you described, does your screen go black? If so, it is likely due to the graphics card being overworked and shutting down the display. It does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with your hardware, as your system is designed to shut itself off when temps get too high, so in a way it means it's working properly

Civ 5 crashes are sometimes due to overheating of the CPU, since it is a very CPU intensive game.

If it is a black screen crash, you might want to double check to make sure your graphics card drivers are updated and/or try playing at lower settings or lower resolution. If you are using Anti Aliasing, try turning it off and checking the box for FXAA instead. It looks roughly equivalent to 4xAA but without slowing down the frame rate.

Let me clarify very carefully that the following questions being asked are in no way an attempt to start a console/platform war or anything resembling one-

Okay guys, this is directed to you PC gamers. I've always been console centric. I played a couple PC games in the past, the last one I did was Age of Mythology, hahaha. As a Mac user I'm very limited unless I go out of my way.

My question in any case is this- How do you deal with the million different issues that can come up during PC gaming? You know, graphics cards going wonky, viruses, etc etc. How do y'all manage that?

When it comes to the games themselves, how do you deal with the crazy amount of issues that can come up when modding?

I'm asking because I'm no platform hater, I like hearing about all sides and what they do/what they go through. Research and learning, all that good stuff.

^Lol, I usually freak out when something goes wrong. xD And ask my boyfriend if he can fix it when I can't. But I think you have a bit of a skewed idea of pc gaming if you think you always get annoying issues like crashes, viruses (you have anti-virus software for that. I haven't had any problems with viruses yet) and crazy graphic cards. And often things can be fixed by fumbling in the settings of things or downloading new drivers.

As for mod issues, those are often simple enough to fix as well. You can pinpoint the mod that is causing problems by loading the games with no mods enabled, then start enabling more and more until the problem is there again (that's how I fixed my bugged Markarth). Then it's away with the annoying bugger.

There is also a pro when playing skyrim on pc, and that is the use of the console. I would not have been able to join the Dark Brotherhood or complete the Thieves Guild questline if I could not have fixed the bugs I encountered with a console command.

No worries, I don't think these things happen ALL the time. I'm just wondering how y'all deal with them when they DO happen.

Because with my PC I have more control over it, can fix problems as they come, and also am not stuck with an over priced rig with limited option to tweak it.

I use to have a console, but the 360/PS3 both had so many issues I just never used them.
I never used a MAC either since I could get a more powerful PC for less money.

Updating graphics card drivers used to be a real pain a few years ago.

You used to have to use driver cleaners and driver sweepers and what not, but starting about 2 years ago, at least for AMD, you no longer need to go through that process. Updating my graphics card driver is a matter of simply clicking "Update" in the AMD Catalyst Control Center. Not sure how it works for NVIDIA as I haven't had an NVIDIA card for a long time.

As for viruses, I haven't had a virus on my PC since the 1990s. :PThere are plenty of free virus protection programs like Microsoft Security Essentials, etc.

I game on a laptop, so there's no way for me to change or upgrade my graphics card. Haven't had any problems, worst case scenario is a couple of games run slow, like Tribes Ascend, Witcher 2 and Metro 2033, so I just reduce the resolution a bit or lower the anti aliasing.

In the case of many games, for example, Skyrim, I've seen a lot of folks having tech issues running it on consoles. On PC, around the time of release date, I noticed that if I ran the game for a very long session of several hours, some of the textures would turn purple and occasionally the game would CTD when that happened. This issue was fixed with the very first or second Steam update patch (I think within a week or two following November 11). After that I never had the purple texture issue (which was related to my video memory buffer getting filled), or any CTDs at all with the vanilla game.

When I installed lots and lots of mods I noticed there are CTDs if you use certain mods that conflict with one another, but it's quite simple to troubleshoot your install and figure out which mods should go in what order, etc., and mods improve the gameplay so much that it's definitely worth any additional hassle IMHO.

Indeed :). Coming directly from the wretched Depths to this rotten infested pus-sack has been quite an experience. I'm based at the bottom for now but want to go collecting hidden loot, around me and back above. It'll be a wretched endeavor. I died a lot getting down here, but I think I've gotten a good feel for the area now. Levelled 3 times at a previous bonfire by farming. When I got down this far I was being abused and hammered by a pesky mosquito, almost dead, blindly running with weariness and afraid of kosing so much progress. Half blindedly I ran away, and happened by chance to run into the uncommon bonfire. I rested with the smallest of health left and zero estus flasks. I made it down :)

Haha, I remember my first time in the Depths thinking to myself "How could this possibly get any worse?" I went into Blighttown, took one look down, then did a facepalm.

Honestly it's not as bad as people make it sound. Only time I ever crash is in Skyrim and that's when I try to get Moonpath to Elsweyr working with like 90+ mods.

As for graphic bugs if you have one there is bound to be someone else experiencing the same thing so a solution really isn't hard to find. As someone who is currently using an AMD card I don't think I've experienced any GPU related issues that was caused by heat or or anything like that. Like Naughty said it's very simple to update your GPU nowadays hell Steam even updates AMD graphics driver if you want. I still manually uninstall drivers and clean it with driversweeper myself but it's really simple. I don't overclock my GPU or CPU since I don't know how, maybe someday, which while very beneficial would scare the ****** out of me if I kill a part in my PC.

As for viruses I don't download porn well I don't download porn with out my antivirus Image IPB
I have two PC's and a laptop. Frankly my laptop is the only one with a antivirus because it's the computer I let others use. My desktops are only ever used by me one is strictly for school/work and the other for all my games and they have never had any kind of malware whatsoever.

And unlike consoles if we encounter a bug in Skyrim we can open up our console and most likely fix or work around it. I can't tell you how many times I've had to use the console to advance a quest, move an npc or enter an area that was locked (Thalmor embassy Barenziah quest).

Okay.:) Well, unfortunately I did have some trouble when I first wanted to play Skyrim. I have laptop with two video cards, an Intel thing that is for light work, and an Nvidia card for real gaming. When I first started Skyrim, the game used my Intel card and of course poor Intel had a bit of trouble with that. Setting the preference in the Nvidia control panel to "powerful Nvidia card" instead of "let the system decide" or something like that fixed the issue.

If things go really wrong with a game, reinstalling often does wonders (although I do hate it when I have to do that).

I usually get CTD when I am over working my poor little laptop.

I do that a lot with my mage....
On that note is there a mod that changes how long the mage skin armor lasts?
It keeps dropping at very bad times for me.

You know if I to say what horse combat needs its this:

1) Shouts and magic from horseback
2) Your horses health/stamina on your HUD
3) The ability to make your horse go one way while you aim independently
4) Turning your horse more tightly
5) Storage on your horses bags
6) Use of your shield

I think some of those might be a lot easier to implement than others.

Shields in particular seem like a significant challenge. Are you able to block with shields in Mount and Blade, for example?

Hopefully archery from horseback will be easier with crossbows. Right now the horses are rather difficult to get into a attacking position.

I dont recall if you CAN block on horseback in MaB, but I preferred their horse combat a bit more.

Really the whole issue comes down to it not being a tactic THAT ALL CHARACTERS can use, since my mage has no desire to ride on horseback without his spells.

Added to that my main uses spell breaker, and without it half my tactics go out the window.
They need to add some real in depth horse combat or its just going to be well a bit of a joke really.

Yea we can in Mount and Blade. Horse combat is great and Bethesda should look to M&B for some inspiration on how to tweak it.

I've found rapid fire while charging them works well enough, though it needs a bit of work for sure. Key with archery on a hrse I find is movement, sort of like all traditional calvery.

Are you guys able to kill things with melee weapons?

Bows seem to be much easier to use (at least in the Steam beta 1.6 version). With 1-handed or 2-handed weapons you really have to maneuver your horse right on top of the enemy in order to hit them. It's a lot easier to use a bow or just dismount and start wacking them.

Oh yeah, Melee works great minus if you stay put, your horse is dead, it works great for groups with either one handed or two handed swords, untill your down to the last man then oddly it can be an issue hitting him.

I find you don't have to get so close with a great sword.

Now if only tthe horse could trample people...

Need some advice on my build here.

I'm currently a 9th level nord. I want to go assassin ninja. I've been building in sneak and archery, and I also began with destruction and restoration. I'd like to now go two wielding instead, but daggers are weak right now. Too late to change direction effectively, or is it workable? I'm also wearing all light armor. Is it worth investing in the light armor perks as well?

I don't think Destruction is very practical for a stealth character. Sneak attacks with a bow are so much better!
And no, it isn't too late for dagger assasinations. In fact, my illusion assasin was quite effective with daggers with 0 perks invested in one-handed for a long time (like till level 40+). Of course get Assasin's Blade in the Sneak treee ASAP.

And you'll definately do yourself a favor if you do the quest to join the Drak Brotherhood ASAP and wear their gloves or gauntlets. They double the backstab damage, so for backstab purposes are equivalent to 5 perks in one-handed...

Finally your life will be MUCH easier if you learn Illusion. An Illusionist has total control over the battlefield... and enemy minds. With Calm his enemies ignore him and turn their backs to him even when they see him.... what's better for a backstabber? You can easily chain Calm-Backstab-Calm-Backstab-Calm-... you get the drill.

In fact, you don't even have to sneak much, if you don't want to! But it's still very fun to
scout the area, plan the attack and always get the jump on the enemies.

If my character is generally a goody two shoes, is there a downside to doing dark brotherhood quests?

Well you kill some pretty important people (they don't have an impact unfortunately) but you can also wipe the brotherhood out if you want.

All of my characters are goody two shoes, and they all are in the Dark Brotherhood. Why? Once you get Shadowmere, you'll understand. Image IPB

Of course, all of my characters join all guilds, so I'm probably the wrong one to answer this.

Its still rather funny to assassinate a group of assassins.

Now is that irony or poetic justice.
Maybe Astrid should have taken away your doomy doom armor of doom first.

I think so, definitely I wouldn't enjoy it if I were playing a "good" character.

Unless you come up with some reason why he would join the DB that makes sense, perhaps. I suppose I don't really play predominantly good or bad characters, but perhaps some have been less scrupulous than others.

If you think about it from the character's perspective, even a villainous character has reasons and motivations for what they do. IRL I don't imagine many people think of themselves as "bad," even if they do bad things.

Oddly Cicero and Babette survive no matter what path you choose.

So even if you destroy them I bet they will have them kill their final big target.
Also can you get Skyrim achievements when set to offline mode? The net at my house is a bit iffy and I want to get back to playing my Khajiit DB before long who is going to get my last achievements.

I didn't join the DB in Oblivion, because I was so worried about being a "bad" character. What a waste that proved to be.
