I do think Blood on the Ice wasn't handled right. If I were the Dragonborn, I would not part with the amulet because that's critical evidence, but if you follow this (correct) route, I think you just wind up with a worthless hunk of jewelry ou cant even sell. With the journals, you don't need to be a handwriting expert to tell if they are Wuunferth's...there should have been some way to examine something he wrote before just arresting him.
I think the game also tries to push ou to do Brynjolf's scheme to find Esbern...you can't just go into the Ratway. My first character had zero thief skills and no desire to help him which was annoying, but I did talk to the barkeep in the Bee and Barb first and luckily found out her more efficient alternate solution. Actually, now that I think about it, it is probably better for some quests to have less conspicuous "better" solutions the player has to investigate on their own to find rather than being led by the hand (and quest markers) - it's better immersion and rewards the player who explores.
