So people, what are you roleplaying characters?

I always have at least a backstory theme for my characters.  Don't enjoy playing otherwise.

My main is a Nord battlemage, grew up in the Imperial City, loyal imperial citizen who begins to study magic in order to beat the Thalmor at their own game but grows disillusioned and leaves to join the Stormcloak rebellion.  My Altmer is an anti-Thalmor agent sent by the resistance to Skyrim to keep tabs on Thalmor activity there.  My orc is a legion veteran who came north to work as caravan guard.  My Nord infiltrator/ assassin is from Anvil, fell in with an assassin crew that was trying to make its name as rival to the DB, so she was sent to kill Ulfric.  After the ambush she suspects that she was set up, so goes freelance to investigate and eventually finds a better deal and better target with the Skyrim DB.

My Imperial was actually trying to join the Stormcloak rebellion too.

Considering getting back into this and creating a new character. Should I wait to buy dawnguard until I'm higher leveled or does it not really matter?

Thanks guys. Anyway since this was lost in translation, does dawnguard add things that would be helpful to a new character or should it only be done for an leveled player?

My Dragonborn has decided to sit on joining the Stormcloaks for a while because their conduct toward "outsiders" left a bad taste in his mouth - he was also called away to join the Dawnguard ASAP due to repeated vampire attacks on both him and other civilians.

He will assassinate the Emperor during his endeavors, but his encounter with Titus Mede will considerably alter his perception of the Empire to one less of hatred and more of respect (for both the Emperor and the Empire itself).

In the end, he will be joining the Legion once he reads the Thalmor dossier on Ulfric - he will immediately leave the Embassy and head to Castle Dour and join them on the spot, realizing that the Thalmor had been pulling the strings of this war all along, and Ulfric was just a pawn in a larger, more sinister plan.

(Eventually, I picture he will aspire for the Imperial throne)

I NEVER got the ridiculous hype this game got. At all. I played it for a while, enough that did most of the faction quests and went to that big mountain but it failed to hold my attention. The main quest was so dull I never even finished it, it seemed the selling point was HEY! DRAGONS! AND THEY FLY!!! Also the bad voice acting really got me, I mean with a very few exceptions it was awful, I usually switched off the sound and listened to some music instead. The visuals were amazing though, I felt like I could stare at the auroras for hours. Exploration, which was kinda big part was EXACTLY like Oblivion which might explain why I got bored so quickly. Combat didn't change at all either except for finishing moves which were horrendously animated at times. But what bothered me the most was the lack of any interesting quests or storylines. In fact the only ones that really got my attention, at least for a while, were the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild. Otherwise? Meh.

It wasn't a bad game but MAN did it make me yearn for a Bioware game.

Yeah I will yearn for a Bioware game again when they are not something that has the EA logo branded on their ass.

Dawnguard doesn't activate until you're level 10 IIRC, so I'll assume you're good to go playing it at that level - I will say, however, that vampires do tend to be a bit tough for lower leveled players (or at least they're tough for me at a low level), so you might wanna take that into consideration if nothing else.

Also, crossbows kick major ass, and Dawnguard warhammers and axes would both be very useful at an early-ish level (they're roughly as strong as Skyforge Steel). There's also Dawnguard armor, but it seems you can't get a full suit of that until you complete a few quests first.

Other than that, I can't tell you much - you can expect vampire attacks to occur in towns and out on the road once it activates though, so keep an eye out. I've also ran into wild werewolves a few times - best to just run IMHO.

All in all... well, Skyrim is a considerably more dangerous place. Be on your guard.

Another problem with this game is the scaling system. I don't think i've ever seen a level scaling system that actually worked. In this game you either face things that are not powerful enough...or the opposite end of the spectrum, too powerful.

I hate level scaling in general. It's nice in theory, but usally amounts to hand-holding.

Morrowind and New Vegas had very mild level scaling, which I found to be acceptable. Skyrim and Oblivion are both complete failures in the level-scaling department.

Skyrim has the same level scaling system as New Vegas, and completely different than Oblivion.

Yeah, and on the whole I find it perfectly reasonable as far as such things go. Oblivion was just awful in that regard though.

Edit: Meh. Must stop feeding trolls.

I like the leveling/scaling system in Skyrim, personally.

Derp.   You're not even describing level scaling here.    You're describing game balance.

Pro-tip:  if your sole purpose on this thread is to spit out one gripe/whine after another for pages on end, at least  familiarize yourself with the gripes you're actually making. lol.

It's the level scaling and it's a complete mess. And yes, I realize some of you kiss Bethesda's ass no matter what they do.

Are there any mods out to improve the gameplay yet. The atmosphere in Skyrim was amazing, but the combat went from:
Hour 1: okay
Hour 40: tedious
Hour 60: painful
Particularly since I played on the highest difficulty level, meaning that magic was worthless and the melee combat in that game leaves a lot to be desired.
