I believe you guys that you can get by without crafting. It just seems to me you can't because honestly I love crafting, so I always have at least one major and one minor crafting skill, and when you invest in it (*not* grind, I never do that) then the random loot starts to seem meaningless because the craft stuff is so much better.

I love crafting too. The issue I have is that at early levels, crafting is mostly meaningless. Then at a certain level it's suddenly better than everything else. Takes away the joy of finding loot.

Besides, it's kind of ridiculous that you can get 100% spell cost reduction using enchanting. My character can spam spells without ever having invested a single point in it.

So while I do like crafting in Skyrim, I also think it's particularly poorly balanced in this game.

PS: Looking forward to trying Dawnguard when they decide it's time to release it on the PC.

I still love loot...

Also, I don't think crafting is meaningless at low levels. Maybe I just suck, but my low level characters benefit a lot from potions and equipment improvement.

I wish there was something that allowed me to respec my character(instead of having to make a new character just to try new stuff).

I'd be content with paying some dude in-game to respec my points if it was some hefty cost like 100,000 Gold or whatever.

Easy for me to say that though since I'm at about 150K right now.

Perhaps I am being a bit harsh.

I do feel crafting tends to make the loot you find pretty much useless though, which is a shame.

Yes, I agree about being able to respec. I wouldn't mind that right about now.

Crafting I like. It allowed me to use the Skyforge steel greatsword the entire game without falling behind and being forced to use ugly weaponry like glass, ebony or daedric.

Same goes for armour.

Yep, that's a really good point. Some of the lower tier armor sets actually look better than the later ones.

You know out of ANY attack in the game the single most annoying one has to be Ice Storm.

Just...ugh.

Yep.  My battlemage wears steel the whole time.  With smithing it's viable without wearing the ugly stuff on the upper tiers, and with enchanting she can get mana boosts.  I don't grind, so I've only ever had 100 smithing on one character and never had 100 alchemy or enchanting, so I don't think it's overpowered.  It's a natural way to keep your character viable and allows for roleplay flexibility.  I find Skyrim's system all in all very intuitive.

Yep.  I still wear Steel Plate...and very unapolegetically.  I do have a mod through Skyforge that will grant you Daedric stats (not that you really need it).

But hell yeah, I love steel plate.  I just can't see my particular Nord in Ebony.  I wore it for a while and went back to plate.  Now, ebony weapons...that's another story.

Quick Inquiry: How soon does one hear mention of the Dawnguard events? I have a 13th lvl Dragonborn about to ascend High Hrothgar, and wonder if he or a new character is a better fit for the DLC.

I believe the Dawnguard stuff triggers at level 10.

Mostly is the key word here, as there's no way for a 5th level character to suddenly craft gear that reaches the Armor rating  cap.

But what can a 5th level crafter do?  A 5th level crafter can  take a piece of Iron armor and improve it so that it has the same armor rating as a piece of Dwarven Armor.  Or Orcish Armor if he finds a fortify blacksmith potion.  IMO that means something, as a non crafter would  have to wait a few more levels before he can find such gear in the world.

I did put Farkas in ebony mail.  Mmmf.

******Discussing Dawnguard below, but without specifics or Spoilers.......I think*****

Really loving the new DLC. :) I finished up the main vampire quest side, and I'm just working on radiant vamp quests now. My only low point: it's going to take me FOREVER to max out the Vampire skill tree to get the achievement since you can't loot anything in vamp form and I love the shiny. :P So, most battles, I just do my normal stealth kills instead of changing to get more vampire perks.

Other than vamp and werewolf skill trees, I have all the other achievements now, except I'm still waiting to fight a certain dragon, but I believe it's just a random encounter. I wonder when it will ever trigger?

Anyway, I've put more than 20 hours into this DLC so far, and I haven't even done the Dawnguard side yet. I'm excited to experience both sides of the story! To anyone on the fence wondering whether to get this expansion, I highly recommend. :D

So... without having played the DLC (PC Gamer :( ) I have a question:

Can we really blot out the sun? Permenantly? Not really, eh? That would be one huge overall world change.

You're right, and I am probably also too mechanics-focused I guess.

I couldn't help but notice some basic flaws in their design. Crafted gear allowing you to specialize without spending points, crafted gear being too powerful, but worst of all the undocumented armor cap that makes crafted light armor better than heavy armor (because the talents are fewer and better for light armor).

But hey, I still enjoy the game, and I'm really looking forward to sinking my teeth into Dawnguard. Ehm, figuratively speaking of course.

Actually, I did not mean actual lvls, but other factors in the storyline. I did not want to get too far long where it would seem anticlimactic. For example, I thought that DG sounded impressive enough in scope to go ahead and complete the Main story early for a change.

My current plan is another proud Orc warrior using Dawnbreaker for the first time, and one of the MR shields.

You know I really want a DLC that is about becoming a Jarl.

Like set it on Solstheim, and see how you can gain some more power as you go.
Maybe...I just want to see how Thirsk, Raven Rock, and the Skaal are doing though.

But seriously 26 days left!

I don't think those are flaws, those are intentional design elements meant to foster player freedom.  It allows you to just play and roleplay without having to min/max stats as much.

On another note, currently walking the 7000 steps with Ulfric and Galmar after Season Unending.  A barrel of laughs.  Snow bear approaches, before I can even take a swing Ulfric Fus Ro Dah's it off the mountainside, Galmar says "that'll teach you to mess with me" and everyone walks calmly on.

It doesn't make sense, though, since no non-Nord is going to be accepted as jarl.

Except for the PC who as a Khajiit or an Argonian can walk around anywhere.

I mean as the Dragonborn you basically are the Nord Version of Jesus.

And people complain about that, saying it's unrealistic. They don't treat the dragonborn as Jesus- most people don't know or care who you are. But it really would be unrealistic if they also let a non-Nord PC become jarl, or even king as some people want.

*sigh* CTD's...  When I did Discerning the Transmundane I forgot to pick up the lexicon before I left, but a CTD had prevented me from opening the Alftand lift, so I have to run through the entire ruin again.  But now a CTD is keeping me from going through a door.  *curses*  Looks like I'm going to have to backtrack a long way in order to finish Septimus' quest and get the Oghma Infinium.

I'm also finding that certain rooms load with content missing- it looks eerie, and there are void areas that drop me back to the entrance.  Reloading fixes that but I have no idea what is causing it.  It happened to me in the Ratway and also once there in Alftand.

True many Stormcloaks might get their panties into a twist if a non-Nord got any power in Skyrim.

The easiest way to fix CTD I found was to exit out, defrag/repair my install in Steam.
Fixes that right up.

Mostly it gets to that point with lots of RAM usage.
Not so much now that I got a fix.

Still rather annoying though.

How do you do that? Verify game files or is there something else?  *oh, I just saw the option to defragment, I'll try that, and maybe clear out some saves.  *still didn't work, still CTD'ing... gah!!!

So many problems would have been averted if I had known not to install games in the Program Files on a Win 7 PC... *sigh*  That's what borks my Wrye Bash and SKSE, because of the security controls.  I wonder, though, can you install Steam somewhere else rather than in Program Files?  Because it's Steam that wants to put everything there.

I think Nords in general wouldn't accept a non-Nord as jarl. It hasn't happened in history so far as I know.
