There's very little difference between Heavy and light armor, and in the end all arguments testifying to their differences become nullified.
For example:
Light armor lets you carry more stuff - It does, right up until your heavy armor skill reaches 70 and you take the conditioning perk, rendering your heavy armor
weightless. Ie. as if you're wearing no armor at all
Heavy Armor gives you a better armor rating- It does, until you start smithing. Then even the most basic leather will reach the armor cap
It's easier to sneak in light armor -that's true, until you actually invest in the sneak tree, then there's no difference at all. And even if you don't do alot of investing, the Muffle enchant on a sett of boots is unusually effective on heavy armor, and you can usually find muffle fairly early on (level 6 or so)
Conclusion: the difference comes in... Aesthetics. IMO some of the light armor in this game is much better looking than any of the heavy stuff. But even then, Aesthetics are a matter of tastes, not game mechanics, so....
