I did hear that you need the Elder Scroll to do the DG quest line- which you can pretty much guess from the trailer, where the PC walks in with it on her back. I guess that means you shouldn't sell it to the orc librarian when you're done with the main quest.

I did the MQ fairly early this time, on my Stormcloak replay. It's worth it to get the Season Unending quest and I was also a lot happier seeing the mist relatively empty instead of encountering Rikke or Ulfric/ Galmar or Kodlak there. It made me teed off to think of Alduin using the Nord afterlife as a stalking ground to increase his power. As Paarthurnax says, he was overstepping his role as lord of time by doing that.

Was also once again reminded of how daft people must be to say that the MQ in Skyrim is not epic enough. Alduin's attacks should be a lot deadlier (those hail of rocks barely do any damage), but the scene itself is pretty moving and so is the one after it with Paarthurnax proclaiming Alduin's defeat. I get choked up when he flies off saying "I feel younger than I have in many an age." Then when Odahviing drops in to say "I'll come when you call me." Dragons are so awesome in this game.

I loaded my first playthrough save, just to see the Dragonbone armor, and noted that I had one of the Elder Scrolls needed for Dawnguard, so that was a relief.

Dragons are awesome in this game. I so want to make a comment about the DLC, but I can't. It would be spoilery.

Are you using an old save? I loaded my first playthrough save (from November), and noted that Louis Letrush (all 3.5 of him) are still standing outside the Whiterun Stables, but I haven't seen it happen since they patched it. It seems to be something that hangs around on save game files, even after the patch. New playthroughs should be ok (I think).

Which other NPCs have you seen that happen with?

You can tag it.  I don't care about spoilers.  Image IPB  I have low expectations for the DLC, since vamps are of no interest to me anyway.

Wait...What?

You have to have the Elder Scroll from Blackreach to do Dawnguard. WTF? I sold it to what's-his-face at the College, becuase I got tired of carrying around 20 virtually useless pounds, freaking years ago it seems!

^ Surely Bethesda has taken that into account, and has a solution. I just happened to play with a character that hadn't been to Blackreach yet, so I only know how it works in that scenario. Maybe there's an entirely new location for you to visit, or there's a quest involving getting the scroll back from Urag gro-Shub? I have no idea.

As for Backstab items, one may also gather these by destroying the DB; perhaps by looting those sent after the Dragonborn, too.

You can't loot the armor of Dark Brotherhood assassins that spawn and try to kill you. You really have to go to the sanctuary to get the gloves.

Shopkeepers have everything you need. A lot of ore/ingots can just be found lying about...usually wherever there is a blacksmith. I haven't broken anything. It's just that you can become overly powerful in such a short span of time...and the game doesn't really compensate well for it. If I have to limit myself, then it is the game mechanics that are broken. If you're going to spend an hour or two crawling through some dungeon, then you expect to find something to make it worth your time...not just more of the same trash that you could have purchased from a shopkeeper.

Except by the time I get the feeling of being too overpowered, I am close to 60th lvl. That is still a lot of gameplay for a single character.

Not saying that Skyrim does not have flaws, but if one looks close, so do most artistic masterpieces.

Thanks; was not positive, as I leave a lot of lesser items behind; reason for the qualifier.

I may go back a few hours to remove any encounter with vampires yet. Looking forward to seeing a Master Vampire appear to be as menacing as the title.

P.S. Does the DG add any variation to the character or quests involving Potema?

You can buy the Elder Scroll back, but it'll cost you twice as much as you sold it for.

Anyway, you don't need the Elder Scroll until much later in the DG questline - you'll have recovered two other Elder Scrolls by then as part of the questline itself. The third is obtained in the MQ.

^ Thanks for the insight. I was wondering how that worked. I figured Urag would be willing to part with the ES, for a noble cause. He's just cool like that.

There are also Ancient Vampires, as my character discovered. I almost think Travelers are worse, though, or maybe that was coincidence.

I haven't noticed a difference with the Potema questline yet, except that the Draugr Deathlord in Wolfstone Cave was able to turn my (werewolf) character into a vampire with just a shout. I'm curious to know if that happens to anyone else. That's got to be a bug.

BTW, I was finally able to pickpocket Farengar for the key for the Whispering Door. I had a ring of sneak (30%) and a necklace of pickpocket (35%). That worked, first try.

And now the Ebony Blade is sitting in a chest, along with Wuuthrad, Ysgramor's shield, Molag Bal's mace, etc., etc.

Perhaps, but I also found it curious that my first warning of vampirism coming from Farkas; one supposedly immune to it

Think I will wait for DG after all, I had started the Spell Breaker quest, but upon review, this shield fails to allow for normal Blocking; believe I will simply wait for the Shield of Solitude.

Maybe it is time for me to start an Alteration / Enchantment character; those Alik'r hunters do look impressive.

Funny you mention that. This happened to me yesterday, and the twins are always standing next to my horse at the Whiterun stables. I was worried they were going to steal him. And I don't have Dawnguard by the way.

^ The Louis Letrush thing was/is in the vanilla game, pre-Dawnguard. I would have thought it'd be fixed by now, but it sounds like it hasn't. I never do the Frost quest anymore, though, so I couldn't say for sure.

Watching them all speak in sync was dang creepy. Especially from the 1/2 version.

Thanks.  And thanks to you happy_daiz.  At least there is a contingency to re-claim the damn thing.  I did not want to revert, or worse, start a new charcter, if I didn't have to.  That little detail had the potential to be a bigger thing than I really wanted to deal with.

Oh, yeah, that definitely could have been a sticking point for many people. I'm glad I know the answer to that now, too.

I'm giving Skyrim a couple of days off. I finished up the DG main questline, but I'm reluctant to begin the Vampire questline. The DG were my brothers and sisters-in-arms. I think I need to let that sit for a couple of days before joining the vampires, and slaughtering them all.

BTW, in case I forgot to mention it today, Dawnguard is amazing.

I finished up the DG campaign, and have been happily frolicking Skyrim with my lovely vampire pet, Serana
. Everything seems great, until I go into a random crypt with Draugr in it. One shout from a Deathlord, and suddenly, the screen turns red, and there is a message about vampirism and feeding. lolwut? My character is a werewolf.

Is there any way you can explain how that works without spoilers? I may be mistaken but I thought you said you joined the Dawnguard. So is sunlight not a huge issue? If it's too spoiler heavy then nevermind, I'll find out the hard way next week.

It's bloody awkward being very curious yet fearing spoilers.

People say Skyrim gets easy at level 30 or so. Maybe, but let me tell you. That big fight alongside Mercer at the end of the find Kaliah quest was rough for me at level 30. Toughest fight to that point. 3 Deathlords and 4 other draugrs. I'm mainly an archery build with 2 one handed perks. They kept shouting my bow away. Lots of healing potions, bobbing and weaving, and like 8 tries later got through it.

@daiz - Hehe, quite the opposite for me.

During the power outage here, I mapped out a vampire character on paper - how the Volkihar can neutralize their enemies and expand their power to the point where they become the de facto rulers of Skyrim (and eventually High Rock and Hammerfell). Lots of political machinations and other string pulling involved, as well as assassinations galore. It's really quite brilliant how I've laid it out - I look forward to my future vampire playthrough.

Yeah, I hear you.  I don't care what level you are, (I was a level 40 or 45 here), facing this crew is never going to be a My Little Pony playdate...

Between
20-30 for me usually. Once you have backstab x15 with rogues and a good
dagger,  the game can get really yawn inducing since you ... hide, one
shot, hide again and repeat. My two handed warriors are about the same
on the power scale. Hitting the magic resistance cap is win for me because fire hosing mages are about the only thing that give me trouble. Just focus on two or three skills and don't spread perks too thin.  I can't imagine playing anything above 30, because
the game just gets really really boring. The RP/story elements are
really shallow so there's not much to keep me hooked beyond that point.
