Destructoid Walkthrough of 60-minute Hands On Demo:

A Second Cave Near Starting Location: "I then made my way to a nearby cave. Near its opening, I was given my first opportunity to test out Skyrim’s combat. With a shield in my left-hand and a iron sword in my right, I went to battle with some jackass bandit. Like all jackass bandits, he had some dumb wolf with him. Or maybe he was attacking the wolf. Either way, I killed them both."

Combat: The hit-detection, sound and weight of melee combat feel great. As someone who never loved Oblivion due to its combat, this is somewhat of a revelation. You’ll still need to adapt to strong sword blows, but at least the timing is consistent. Even better, you now have critical deathblows that let you finish off an adversary with an intense thrust to the gut or slash across the throat...

Combining Weapons with Magic: After getting a handle on using my shield, I changed over to using a firespell with my left hand. It turns out that lighting people on fire and beating them with sharp things is a pretty good combination. If you really want to humiliate these cave-lovin’ freeloaders, though, you can carry a torch in your left-hand and set them ablaze with it.

Archery: My favorite weapon has to be the bow. The revamped physics and controls made me feel responsible for every arrow shot. The trajectory of the arrows is realistic and not randomly determined by stats, but the damage is. A stealth arrow to the head is something I don’t think I will grow tired of during the many hours I plan to spend with Skyrim.

Level Design: The cavern itself was rather impressive for being such a hum-drum locale. The elements of Skyrim’s new engine are displayed to great effect. The lighting generates a haunting atmosphere, and a waterfall coming down the multi-tiered levels of the cave presents a spectacle that interiors in Fallout 3 and Oblivion lacked.

Companions: NPCs will follow you based on their perception of you -- a mix of your karma, dialogue choices and quest favors all brought together through the new Radiant AI system.

!!!!!Bards Confirmed:!!!!!! Additionally, there are new features such as...requesting a bard to play a song in a tavern. Now, if only you could get him to follow you into a bandit cave and abandon him.

In what way?

Spell combos like say in Magicka you combine a fire and earth spell and you get a fireball.

Todd mentioned in one interview that they were working on that but hadn't decided whether they would leave it in the game or not.

Which one? The thanksgiving sale or new year sale? Will the price be discounted at that point?

Even though I have some of the games in the Quakecon pack its very tempting to pre-order Skyrim just for that. I'm unsure about Rage though, I disliked Doom 3 (after loving Doom 1 and 2), although I did like Quake 4, go figure.

Yup. $60 no way am I buying it for that amount. Witcher 2 was $45 and Deus Ex is also $45.

No but I meant if we pre-order both Skryim and Rage the discount on the Quakecon pack is bigger.

I'm not happy either, its $90 in Australia where I am. But is it likely to fall in the near term?

God I hate regional pricing EA for all its other faults has actually been good about having more reasonable regional prices than other large publishers.

HOLY-----! ZOMG I just saw what you are talking about - that reduces the price to $39.99 for the 20-30 games (including 6 or 7 good ones). Wow!

I'm already pre-ordering Skyrim and Rage, but unfortunately, the only thing I don't already have from the 2010 Quake-Con pack is Brink and Old World Blues. Not really worth $40 for me.

Can we gift the Quake-Con pack to someone else if we keep Skyrim and Rage for ourselves? Or is the entire purchase selected as "gift"

It's not EA's fault - not completely. It's the rising cost of making AAA titles. But $60 for a game is ridiculous. The sad thing is that it won't be *that* much cheaper during any of the close sales, either.

DX3 just had a sale on Green Man Gaming for $27. I should have picked it up then.

Not for this game, IMHO.

For some of us, Skyrim at $60 is a better value than most games that retail for $40 - 50. On the other hand, if you will only play Skyrim for 20 hours or so and then stop, then yes, obviously the cost per hour of entertainment value would be quite high.

For example, here is a list of some recent games I have purchased and completed during the past few years (still haven't completed Oblivion main quest, but you can see how long it is already):

Oblivion: $30 / 1500 hours = $0.02 per hour
Civ5: $60 / 500 hours = $0.12 per hour
DA2 + ME2: $60 / 310 hours = $0.19 per hour
FNV: $50 / 300 hours = $0.16 per hour
FO3: $30 / 250 hours = $0.12 per hour
Magicka: $10 / 40 hours = $0.25 per hour
DA:O: $70 / 210 hours = $0.33 per hour

Based on some of the info I've read about Skyrim so far, I estimate a much higher replay value than previous TES games:

*280 perks to choose from, making the second, third, fourth playthroughs more fun

*20+ dragon shouts with 3 different levels for 60+ shout effects, making it more fun to play pure warrior or pure stealth characters who don't use magic

*10 races with revamped character designs, making it a bit more fun to play new races

*Radiant Story feature which alters each playthrough

*Many more features in the vanilla game allows for some truly ambitious mods!
[/list]

For Skyrim, I'm estimating (personally) 5-10 playthroughs of around 300-500 hours each, spread out over a period of several years, so roughly $0.02 - 0.03 per hour of gameplay at $60 pre-order price.

Skyrim: $60 / 1500 to 3000 hours (estimate) = $0.02 - $0.04 per hour

Consider a game like Portal 2, which is currently on sale for $29.99 via Steam:

Portal 2: $30 / 8 hours = a whopping $3.75 per hour of entertainment value!!

Consider any other game that retails for $50 and provides 40+ hours of gameplay:

$50 / 40 hours = $1.25 per hour of entertainment value

Perhaps you estimate a much lower entertainment value for yourself, perhaps 100, 200, 500 hours - depending on how many hours you enjoy playing, it is still likely to be a better value than most games.

Have to agree with naughty99 here. I usually demand my games be $50 or under. Most of the time I pay around $20-30 for year old pc games. But then there's SF4, which sucked up 800 hrs of my life...for $60. I certainly didn't get ripped off buying SC2 for $60.

With Skyirm, if it's good, I will spend several hundred hours on it over a 2-3 year period. It's truly one of those games I'm willing to shell out more cash for.

I have about 12 hours on Oblivion. You can't use that and justify the price. Recettear $20 over 120 hours. Much less. Witcher 2 $45 I have 5 playthroughs and started a new one. Dragon Age 2 $60 and 2 playthroughs around 20 hours each. Fallou 3 finished it and haven't gone back to it.

I understand some people thinking the amount of time you spent on a game means the price is ok but what about indie games which are better then a lot of triple AA titles. Terraria, Minecraft, Recettear, Torchlight...all cheaper and I've spent more time on them then any Bethesda game.

I can't use what, exactly? My own estimated playing time for Skyrim? How else would I determine the value for myself and whether the price is worth it to me?

If you estimate 12 hours of playing Skyrim, then the cost per hour of entertainment value for you will be extremely high and you should probably wait until it's on sale.

We can only make these determinations based on our own individual estimates of how many enjoyable hours of entertainment we will get out of these games.

If you get a lot more hours of entertainment from cheaper games, then there is no reason for you to buy Skyrim at full price.

....meanwhile, I'll be eating mad dragon souls and enjoying my ass off :wizard:

I also usually wait for sales, but Skyrim is worth it. More than $60 imo. One playthrough is 300-400 hours for me. Thats insane value

I kind of agree that games nowadays are too expensive, at least at launch. I bought Mass Effect 2 for a full 65 dollars (Including shipping) and then in a few months, steam had it for 25 dollars (Deluxe edition).
Not to mention the fact that Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 cost me 20 dollars yet I've seem to get a lot of fun out of them than I did with Black Ops which was 60.

Other than that, I know I'll get Skyrim and maybe Mass Effect 3 at full price but I'll wait until other new games drop.

This game has the potential to be the greatest game ever. A long way away from that, but the potential is there. :)

Any new gameplay footage yet?

Just read this on the Bethesda forums. Its a google translation from a German website or magazine...

Night falls, fluttering spectacular northern lights illuminate the sky, white butterflies and fireflies all around us. A panting and howling can perk up their ears - a snarling wolf falls upon us. With a few quick slashing blows, he is slain, the fur is ours. After a hill then suddenly the wide view on a plane - and on Whiterun. The developers have created a wonderfully atmospheric high-fantasy world, which is already at the viewing points to stay on an emotional highlight - impressive! The medieval town below us seems to be asleep, in the center rises the keep, like a small castle nestled for protection of the fortified tower. Houses around it are close to tight, criss-crossed by narrow lanes, all embraced by the gently irregular round the city walls.

The start of it to me sounded awesome. I think it comfirms that the Aurora Borealis(sp?) is going to be in the game.

We only briefly left alone in this idyll of shy animals, colorful flowers and cheerful chirping of birds: a hunter, accompanied by her dog, greets us from afar. We have a chat, but want to have anything at the moment of the goods they offer us. When we want to do again on the way, the nature-loving lady a few yards further discovered an ore deposit, simply pulls out their picks and knocks off a few chunks.

NPC's that actually do things!
