The beginning is the difficult part here. Morrowind gets much easier, at least if you level your character in a semi-reasonable fashion. Same madness as in Oblivion applies here if you are into min-maxing but I have played through without it and that was perfectly possible.

Particlarly the DB assassins in the beginning are crazy.

Oh, and Morrowind is NOT aggressively level-scaled (but yes there is some scaling going on). Go to the wrong place in the beginning, you die. I like it that way, but I understand if it's not to everyone's liking.

I understood that last part, the NPCs pretty much tell you- go into the back country before you level and you're dead meat.  It's so funny that the NPCs all are aware they are in a video game.   People knock Skyrim's writing but Bethesda has come a long way in terms of natural dialogue and NPC behavior.

I can't seem to level at all, though- only one or two skill increases and in minor skills even though I'm using my major weapon and armor class and attacked every innocent bug I saw.

^ The mystery murderer of Skyrim has made itself known to you too? I was walking from Riften to Whiterun this morning and just over a slight hill on the road I see someone firing ice magic into the sky. Assuming a fight is going on and fearing its an innocent NPC being attacked I charge up the road and over the hill. What do I find? An ash pile, it was someone with a note saying they have been sent to get Azura's Star back from me. So I look around but see no one and no creatures. Using Aura Whisper and Detect Life produced no results, there was no one or nothing around for miles. This is not the first time this has happened. Who is this mystery murderer of Skyrim?

I've taken to using detect life on anyone I meet now because of growing vampire paranoia.

A mudcrab!  Who... can teleport!

Son of a... this is the second time in a row Maven asked me to bring her the Goldenglow Bill of Sale during Scoundrel's Folly - only for the option to actually give it to her not even coming up in the dialogue box. It worked for me on a past playthrough, but apparently in the last two characters where I did the TG quests, she changes her mind and decides she doesn't want it anymore.

I love this game to death, but little things like that bug the hell out of me.

Now I wish I could say that the horse killed the Stormcloak, but no body was ever discovered, and I play with the same cautionary mindset as I have for TV and films (ie; no corpse means the possibility of life). And I used Quick Travel to return to Whiterun, so I am feeling somewhat secure. But what I find amusing is that this robed Dragonborn managed to clear Shearpoint with less required healing than any previous encounter, and all due to an avenging AI.

All archer-types in this situation need to check their crime stats.  Stay arrows WILL kill innocents, and the game will chalk it up as  1 murder per kill.

In my "pious paladin" playthrough, I was like 35th level  when I decided to check  those statistics in the journal, and I was shocked by the number of assaults and murders he had logged.   I learned that any friendly fire is considered an assault, too.

Yeah they have improved in some ways, but I still prefer the story in Morrowind. I also think it has the best setting. Not that I hate Skyrim at all.

I do hope you give Morrowind a bit more of a chance. Always a bit strange stepping back in time like that. It's not exactly prettier or less buggy. I don't know, perhaps I remember Morrowind so fondly because it was my reward every day after studying for some nasty uni exams.

I can't seem to level at all, though- only one or two skill increases and in minor skills even though I'm using my major weapon and armor class and attacked every innocent bug I saw.

Hmm I don't remember it being that much of a problem. But I do remember using the trainers a lot. Money is easy to come by if you know how.

And if you don't: Talking mudcarb... crab merchant. Do NOT kill him, he looks just like a normal mudcrab. Oh and "Scamp" in Caldera. Loot. Sell. Train. Once you're a bit of a badass, it should come more naturally.

The problem in Morrowind is that you start utterly pathetic.
However by late game...you can beat down DEMI-GODS without much trouble.
A really easy trick though?
Create a destruction spell that drains a skill by 100 points, for 2 seconds on self.
Then train for free.
I know its an exploit but it lets you level destruction, and a skill for basically nothing.

I really hope they announce when Dawnguard is coming out for PC/PS3 next week.

Yeah, my current Dragonborn tries to keep a clean record, but according to those statistics preemptively striking a walking dead draugr is a crime. Shooting an angry cave bear from a safe distance? Also a crime.

Between little things like that plus followers having a penchant for walking straight into the line of fire, and well...just going by the numbers, the Imperials at the beginning of the game were doing the right thing.

That's why I just embrace my criminal past and steal from, assault, and murder people like a bandit (in fact, I RP my character as having been a notorious bandit back in Cyrodiil). Give in to the Dark Side, and it shall make you powerful. >:D

Yeah; learned the hard way when I accidently killed my own horse..... Image IPB

I try not to open fire when facing a village or town, and aim for the center of the 'flying cross' as a Dragon hovers in their attack.

Oh the Morrowind exploits. There are sooo many good ones. My favorite is how intelligence affects the strength of your potions, so you can keep making better and better intelligence potions. Once I made potions of healing that would constantly heal me to full and last for days ingame. I had 23k intelligence when I finally got bored.

Heh, I liked to enchant an item with 1 point in Slowfall, then use the Soultrap glitch to get my Acrobatics to like 200 - oh, what fun I had hopping around Vvardenfell like I was on the moon, and never taking a lick of damage.

I made a custom spell that made guards run and jump very fast.

They launched themselves off the game world!
Ah good times.

Anybody use the ENB mods to improve graphics in Skyrim? They're pretty amazing. I'm using Sharpshooter's preset. However, I'm trying to figure out if it's worth using any extra AA on top of it. I'm not seeing any graphical gains by using 8x AA in the game...not huge anyway. I get about 40fps with 8x AA enabled on ENB. 60fps turning it off. But I'm guessing ENB uses its own AA, that's why I don't see much of a gain when I force 8x AA on the game? So should I just leave it off and use ENB's AA? Game is gorgeous regardless but I don't mind running at 40fps, if I get a higher boost in graphics. If I don't need it though, I'd prefer a constant 60fps.

I haven't tried to force FXAA on top of it though, so I have no idea what that will look like.

I'd have to say, the Depth of Field blur is kinda annoying in combat as a archer. When I aim, everything behind what I'm aiming at blurs out. Not sure I like that. Might tweak it...

Here is one of the presets I'm talking about: www.youtube.com/watch

Damn it.
My laptop power cord bit the bullet today.
So there goes my Skyrim playing until I get a new one.

I guess I should get back to real life....for a few days until I get back to Skyrim.
Or...an entire week it seems.

Odd that it takes a full week to get it out 50 miles from the city

I don't use ENB, but I did add mods to scuttle the blur effects. Much nicer without them.

I played a bit more of Morrowind today. Man, clearing one dungeon is like an epic undertaking. Still haven't leveled. It's interesting how you can fail to cast a spell even though it looks like you're casting it. Also that just running around everywhere drains fatigue even though you're going soooo sloooowly. I can see why people say games nowadays are cakewalk.  I think the improvements are good.

Aye, Skyrim is a vast improvement on both Morrowind and Oblivion - some might call it "streamlining" or "dumbing down", but those people can bite me. The formula needed an overhaul, and an overhaul is what it got.

The part about walking slowly... yep, that's Morrowind alright. If it bothers you, two pieces of advice:

1. The Boots of Blinding Speed. Look them up.
2. There is an official plugin that allows you to teleport between certain sites around the game world. Between that, Mark/Recall, and fast travel locations, you can get around fairly quickly.

The travel time did have its charm for me though. It was an epic undertaking in my first game just getting to Ghostgate. I literally looked at the paper map and went "Ghostgate? Sounds promising, let's go there". I got there half-dead, stole some glass weapons and was ready for more, so I thought I'd take a peek at Red Mountain. Got chased out and kept running. Ran into another nasty creature and got chased some more. I ran until I reached the coast.

Best fun in years. Plus it made it that much more epic when I finally went in there prepared and geared much later.

PS: Get ready to hate cliff racers if you don't already.

Mods exist to remove Cliff Racers from the game, actually - I highly, HIGHLY recommend it if you want to save yourself from some epic, keyboard-smashing frustration.

LOL  I was going to look at mods and decided it was too soon.  Not too soon?

In other only tangientially Skyrim-related news, Vladimir Kulich (Ulfric's voice actor) is currently shooting for a History Channel dramatic series called "Vikings."  What I think is funny is that the main guy, played by Travis Fimmel, is named Ragnar.  Hopefully not like Ragnar the Red.

Speaking of which, I really do hope they do something more with the Civil War - that storyline has a lot of potential, especially in regards to the Thalmor (who were somewhat underutilized in the main game IMHO). Infiltrating the Embassy, storming Northwatch Keep, kicking Ancano's ass, and slaughtering Justiciars out on the roads just doesn't quite do it for me.

I still think Morrowind is the best ES because it's the best experience I had. Skyrim is technically a better overall game but when it comes to experiences, Morrowind was better.

And I thought Oblivion was average. I'd prefer Morrowind over Oblivion. Morrowind had a much better world than Oblivion. Skyrim builds off both Morrowind/Oblivion and that's why the formula is so good.

Thought I'd post this here. Pretty impressive stuff.
