Whoa, a DG member stole your horse? Too funny! I didn't witness that myself, but I probably will now. Well, if I get another horse, that is.

Yeah, let us know what that mystery murdering mudcrab has been up to!

I did witness something funny outside of Riften. Before I actually started the DG questline in this playthrough, I saw something whiz by me, cloaked by invisibility. I followed it, and finally was able to stop and talk to her - a Dunmer vampire. I hadn't picked sides yet, so all she said to me was, 'How can I help you?" Then she re-cloaked, and kept running.

Huh.

So I played Skyrim on the home PC today...not on my laptop.
Its kind of amazing what the game is like WITHOUT mods really.
I mean dynamic guards and extended vanilla weapons alone made the game much more varied alone.

My sister is still playing along as her Nord...because she does not know about fast travel yet.
Heh.

^ How I wish they just got weapon mods atleast onto console. I don't think I'd bother with anything that makes the game easier or anything. But I'd love a few things like different weapon skins and changes to the wildlife. Anything that adds more flavour.

@ Happy Daiz: Yip, I was on the dappled grey horse from Riften that wanders back home when you get off. I went into a vampire cave which was so small it had one enemy. About a minute or so later I emerge and ofcourse the horse has wandered off. I cast detect life and couldn't find it. I went round a corner and there was the horse, now with a DG member on it. When she got off I waited for a minute to see what it did and low and behold it starts walking back to Riften in the opposite direction to her. So I'm about 90% certain she stole my horse. Watch your belongings in Fort Dawnguard is all I'm saying.

Things I learned tonight; waterfalls are not always shortcuts and apparently there's 30 different ways to be attacked in your own home at any moment.

^ Although I totally recommend jumping down the waterfall in Dead Drop, which you can get to in Fort Dawnguard. That cave and mine were pretty cool, plus it's a good way to pick up a few fire and frost bolts. And there's a puzzle to get in! Don't worry, it's not that difficult.

Oh, and Bard's Leap Summit. That's totally worth it, too.

I wonder what else fellow members of DG will steal from you, then? Image IPB

Silly man. What you previously owned is now the property of the Dawnguard.

^ I hope they don't look through my chest in Breezehome then. They may find my collection of witches heads, giants toes, daedra hearts, human hearts, briarhearts, human flesh and various other things that might be required for alchemy but in general are the kind of things that only the mental would own. First they might question the smell of the chest, secondly they might question if I'm really Dawnguard material.

Or how I managed to fit enough armor to equip an entire army in one.
Or enough crafting material to create a city.
Or enough weapons to arm all of Skyrim ...20 times over

Getting used to the smithing update here. It was silly that you could just spam iron daggers before. Now, however, it's silly that pretty much everything except jewelry is not worthwhile for leveling smithing.

Other than that little problem, I'm quite enjoying my first game in a while.

What I do to power level smithing after the patch is go loot a a couple dwemer ruins then make a crapload of dwarven bows. That may help.

Was about to post the same thing.  Pretty much all of my smithing from 90 to 100 was from Dwarven weapons and upgrades.  Easy way to boost Smithing/Speech/Gold

Good thing General Kickass already is a smithing master. It was the gateway that allowed me to reach 100 in a variety of other skills, and it made me as good as invincible.

Smithing is awesome.

From my experiences, the most challenging area of the game for me is navigating the lands of the Forsworn; at least that spring to thought currently. And I have to wonder how much more difficult this would be if the arrows and poisons actually had bite to them.

This sprang to mind recently while playing the last few characters, and found myself willing to openly explore most of the other paerts of Slyrim, but actually planning and plotting courses to bypass Forsworn controlled locations. Perhaps this comes from the increases perception these fanatics possess, and I always use Stealth for characters, but when I read remarks concerning the ease of gameplay, I have to smirk a little.

Most difficult part for me is meeting something like a bandit chief early in the game. Everything is really easy then suddenly comes a guy that takes half my HP in one swing. Typically you will meet single weak enemies throughout a whole dungeon then one REALLY tough boss enemy surrounded by 10 weaker ones. It just doesn't make any sense to me the way the game is balanced. It also doesn't make sense that I can beat two dragons at once more easily than a small group of bandits.

But it has still improved since Oblivion, and you can outlevel those annoying bandits eventually. Of course then the dragons should pose more of a challenge, but one thing at a time I suppose.

While I agree that dragons could use some vitamins, I also concur that extended combat for each encounter might get old real fast, if they all were buffed. I am hoping the new DLC inclusions of tactics and Legendary dragons will aid this problem.

But bandit chiefs, Mages, and most encounters can be met fairly effectively by Archery and Stealth, and decent gear. The Forsworn place a dent in Sneak, and many also are decent Archers so range is not as effective as a defense either.

I was thinking about that this morning. It would have been nice if you could swap out certain metals when you're making weapons and armor, with ones that you like better. For instance, if you wanted a solid gold Elven set of armor, could you use real gold ingots instead of Moonstone/Quicksilver? (The horror, right?) But what about weapons? To be able to have the hilt of your weapon to Ebony, (or Malachite, or whatever,) instead of Steel, or just something different would be cool.

Obviously you can just wait until your smithing is to whatever level, but if you could customize appearance by using slightly different metals as accents, that would be cool.

On a Dawnguard note, I did a side quest on the vampire side, and ended up with two new rings - one gave +100 health, and one gave +100 magicka, plus some other benefit that escapes me. Very cool.

You can cheese your way around most encounters by sniping and then retreating. However, it's a bit boring. And in the beginning, you don't have decent gear and due to the smithing leveling nerf it takes ages before you can make something good.

There's also the usual problem in games that offer stealth as a playstyle option: You base your approach on stealth and some of the more difficult fights force you to start out of stealth. For example, there's a guy on the way to the Greybeards in the beginning that wants you to follow him (and it leads to an ambush). You can't stealth your way there because then he just stops walking.

I'm not saying I can't get around it though, I am just hoping that next time, they will make the leveling a more even experience and not this very easy, very easy, very easy, DRINK ALL YOUR POTIONS OR YOU DIE, very easy, very easy.

That would be pretty sweet. Personally I favour Skyforge Steel or Blades swords but even they look quite boring, I preferred the weapon design in Oblivion and The Witcher 2. It would be even better if when crafting the sword not only could you pick hilt/blade material but also have a choice of several different shapes and designs based on the materials.

Things I learned last night/this morning:

The reason for the predicament you first find Serana in has become apparent to me, the woman is nuts. I was trying to converse with an important NPC on a Dawnguard quest but was distracted yet again by Serana's antics. This time she became stuck in sneak mode, which occassionally happens, she seemed to want to use this to level her sneak and kept walking back and forth behind the guy, peeking out at me from either side of him.

Then I found a shack away up in the mountains where a woman named Angi lives, she can set you bow related challenges. I could not complete these because Serana kept insisting on either walking into me or walking infront of me like the mental b*tch she is. It's no wonder she was where you found her, she probably freaked the rest of the vamps out, imagine spending eternity with that.

Sometimes the physics take on a very A-Team quality. I did that sword hilt punch thingy that you do when an enemy has their shield up, to an enemy who was on a step above me, with a fire enchanted sword. It not only killed the unfortunate bandit in one hit but also sent him flipping right over my head to land away down at the bottom of the steps.

While walking up north of Windhelm, where there's a shipwreck, a skeleton fell from the sky landing infront of me, it was named Anvar or something and when I searched it it was empty. I've no clue where it came from but I'm blaming Serana with her crazy assed fireball staff related madness.

I've noticed a few difficulty spikes recently, I can take out a Dwemer Centurion in 2 hits but it takes a whole lot more to take out a Falmer for some reason. I had to go into a cave full of vampires and necromancers, thats the hardest battle I've had in many many hours. I was constantly chugging down potions in that final battle, partly because I'm built to do battle sword to sword, not really to take on vamps and secondly because that vampire had a ton of health.

And finally, armoured trolls do not make great sidekicks. They ruin your stealth and its possible to mistake one for an enemy if you spin around real quick and accidently kill it...yeah...I've been avoiding Gunmar since that incident...

^ I would expand on my original statement to include jewels, along with metals that you like. It would be pretty awesome to be able to choose the general shape, too. I know, I can already hear it now, "play on PC, so you can use mods". Yeah, yeah.

I was really hoping that we'd get to see Dawnfang/Duskfang (from Shivering Isles) again. It wasn't the best weapon in the world, but I loved it. I mean, if they're going to bring Chillrend back, why not that? Chillrend wasn't that great in Oblivion, either. But I digress.

I'm familiar with Angi, and I can imagine how Serana would drive you bonkers with her pacing. I mentioned it yesterday, but I was doing Season Unending with the Greybeards (the negotiations with Tullius and Ulfric), and Serana kept sitting down in peoples' seats. Ulfric had to stand half of the time.

I was doing a vampire quest in Solitude, and told her to wait in that tunnel behind the shop stalls (the one that comes out near the docks), so I could...take someone out. Well, I did that, went invisible, and she ran out of there, and started fighting guards. I had to reload a couple of times, because if I did get away, she was still in Solitude. I finally just said to hell with it, and went back to get her. When I did, the guards were hostile, so I paid one of them off, then went to find Serana. She was over by the bard's college. Nothing like staying right where I told her to.

It is my belief that anything that falls from the sky is a gift from Uncle Sheo. He just wants you to be happy.

I've been thinking about taking one of those death hounds out. I'd have to make sure to stay out of towns, though. I'm not sure they could handle the awesomeness of CuSith.

Oh! Totally different topic, but something I noticed with DG. Inside the vampire castle, and in Fort Dawnguard, I found a ton of new books about Khajiit. Call me crazy, but...does that seem like it could be a foreshadowing to something to come?

And then there's that new path SE of Riften, that seems like it would go to Morrowind, that says something to the effect of, "You can not go in that direction."

I'm getting mixed signals, but the speculation is oh so exciting! Of course, I could be way over-thinking this stuff.

*spoiler alert*

Armored trolls are good if you're expecting to get into a straight-up brawl, like when you storm Castle Volkihar - Gunmar brought several and I brought an armored Frost Troll of my own, and between me, Serana, the Dawnguard, and the pack of trolls, we made mincemeat out of the vampires and their gargoyle and death hound lackeys.

But if you're just roaming Skyrim or trying to sneak through a dungeon, trolls are definitely more of a bane than a boon.

Anyway, I'm still trying to map out my new character - I've started digging deep into the game's mechanics and starting mapping out what perks I want and all of that stuff. Right now, I'm stuck on which one-handed weapons I want to use - maces have that armor penetration bonus, but they are pretty slow. Sadly, axe and sword perks are pretty much worthless (though bleeding damage is useful for trolls).

Also not sure how many points I should put into Juggernaut - I know the armor cap in 567 IIRC, and a good rating in Smithing combined with a few enchanted items and a potion should push you real close to the cap (I don't plan on using Alchemy or Enchanting, however - I'll be using circlets, rings, and other stuff that I find in game to boost the armor rating).

^ A shrine? You can find them all over the place, and there's more than one type, but any of them will cure all diseases. Whiterun has a shrine of Talos in front of Jorrvaskr. Riften also has a shrine of Talos outside the Thieves Guild. Falkreath has a shrine of Arkay near the cemetery. Solitude has a temple that contains all of the shrines (except Talos).

Maces are great. If you do go for dual-wielding there's a perk that increases speed. Makes them both fast and deadly.

Most tough enemies have lots of armor, and that's exactly where maces shine. You're probably going to shred anything without armor regardless of weapon bonuses.
