Hermaeus Mora's reward is too good to pass up for a little gameplay price.

^ Good call. I always forget about him.

Honestly, I do all the Daedric quests, in pretty much every playthrough. The only one that gives me pause is Vaermina's. I just feel awful about killing Erandur.  Sometimes I do let him live, but I get some weird sort of satisfaction from stealing peoples' dreams.

I believe the wiki says that you don't need the Skull of Corruption for that one achievement related to daedric artifacts, if you care about that sort of thing at all.

@ Happy_Daiz: I didn't realise it gave a quest, it didn't alert me. I started it by accident when I got sent for a crossbow upgrade and then decided to rather ill advisedly investigate the rest of the dwemer ruin. I thought there would be epic loot, I found a...thing and a door back into Blackreach. I was genuinely confused and ended up checking the wiki to see what the hell I'd found.

Meeko has been great for me and I feel really bad not taking him along because he just goes back to sit in his shack when you send him home. I wish you could get the dogs to stay in your houses.

It actually does show up as a quest, but it's hidden amongst all of your other Miscellaneous quests. It says something simple like, "Investigate such-and-such ruin"... Oh wait, if you went to the ruin for schematics, I'm guessing that might be a different ruin altogether? Heck, I'm not sure. All I know is that the Aetherium one confused me, because I had recently heard a couple of spoilers against my will, and when I'd completed that questline, thought I must have seriously missed something. I'd heard just enough to make me question what I was doing, and whether I missed a path, or a door, or something. It came later on.

In regard to the schematics quest you were talking about, I had one location where I had two other quests active there. One was killing Alain DuFont for Muiri (DB), and the other...I don't remember. But I was glad I'd waited, because I was able to kill not two, but three birds with one stone!

So in regard to Meeko...he can die, though, right? I would worry about that. Instead of reloading to save Lydia, like my first playthrough, I'd be reloading to save Meeko. Sigh. I had the same trouble and worries with Dogmeat and Rex in Fallout 3 and NV, but I eventually forced myself to get over it.

Yeah, I saw that investigate Angthkamz or whatever its called in my miscellaneous quests but I had no idea where it came from. I wish they gave more details there.

Thats exactly what happened and it was infact the ruin you're describing. Alain DuFont was in there attacking me for no reason and I killed him. I haven't even started the DB questline yet, I hope that doesn't break anything. Instead of just heading out I decided to investigate the rest of the ruin and thats where things went a bit ****** up, I killed my troll and the Falmer seemed really hard to kill for some reason. It turned into a whole ordeal and I was very glad to exit onto that mountain on a crisp night with a bright yellow aurora borealis lighting up the land.

I did Ankgthamz last night because I realised I was quite close to it, pretty cool quest and a nicely designed dungeon that one.

Meeko is very killable, enemies rarely kill him but on occassion he runs infront of my sword and gets one hit killed. The dogs can take out alot of enemies on their own, me and Serana just stood watching last night as Sceolang took out two bears. For ages my main task was keeping Meeko alive as enemies rarely troubled me, that seems to have changed in DG thankfully so theres a new challenge with taking the dogs and keeping myself alive. I can deal with killing most people in the game but I have to reload if even an NPC dog dies . Might have something to do with the hairy beast currently asleep with his head on my leg. The woman who goes on pilgramage to kinareth's shrine in Whiterun who has a dog with her got attacked by death hounds, the dog died trying to defend her. I had to reload, next time a horse died in the battle outside Whiterun, I was fine with that.

I see what you mean about crossbows too, I still think I prefer a bow because I haven't got the perks to shoot fast enough with a crossbow. If it doesn't kill first time I have to whip my swords out and wade in, with a bow I can just shoot again. Trying to level bows and enchanting now at the same time is leaving me a bit gimped in the bow department. I gave Serana one but she seems to prepare staffs.

I still haven't gotten that stupid achievement. I only had 4 left before DG came out, and now I have many more, because I haven't maxed out the werewolf or vampire trees yet.

Somehow, even on pseudo completionist playthroughs, I must miss something, because I never quite have enough to get that. I do all the Daedric quests, all guild quests, etc. I must be missing something. I'll probably do a total facepalm when I figure out what it is.

You'll be fine with killing Alain DuFont, before you have the DB quest. You'll just be able to turn the quest in as done earlier. There's another part to it, if you want a bonus from Muiri, so you'll probably want to weigh that first. You'll see when you get there.

There is definitely a time and place for crossbows. I had the fast reloading perk I described, but even with that, I still switched back to a standard bow from time to time. I think you just have an instinct for when it's appropriate, and when it's not.

Yeah, given the choice, Serana will use a staff. Plus, with her uber magicka, the charge will last a really long time for her. One other thing that works great with her is to give her a mace or sword with absorb health. Playing as a vampire has made it pretty obvious to me what some of the shortcomings can be, and that has really helped her stay viable in a fight. Oh, and she's marked as essential, so she can't die anyway.

^ I'll keep that in mind. I think I'll start DB after DG, I was trying to save it until last. I had one character last me several years in Oblivion and I'm hoping to do the same with Skyrim, so I take things rather slowly rather than rushing through. I dislike starting over and feeling weak again after building myself up for so long, I don't mind it in more story focused games like The Witcher 2 but I don't fancy it in Skyrim, I like my character how he is. I can go months without playing then come back and pick up right where I left off, remembering exactly what was going on. I tried that in Fallout: New Vegas and it went horribly wrong.

Crossbows are definately cool and for the right build they can be awesome, unfortunately I'm nowhere near that build yet. I'm still a stealthy sword monger for the most part, my tactics still start off Rambo in First Blood and end up Rambo in First Blood Part 3. Stealth...Stealth...FIGHT!!

Serana is a beast, I thought Jordis was a murdering machine but I've yet to see Serana even come close to losing half her health bar and she comes with her own followers if you give her a staff of summoning. I turned round in a Dwemer ruin last night and found Sceolang, Serana, a flame autronoch, Katria and an undead Falmer all waiting for me to push on. I finally saw her seat stealing antics that you described, dinner time in the Jarl's palace in Riften, people can't eat because Serana keeps stealing their seats. I remain convinced the entire plot of DG started off as a convenient excuse to get rid of her because she was a nightmare around Castle Volkihar.

The mystery of the naked corpses has been solved. I witnessed it last night...vampires!! They killed some vigilants of Stendarr, stole their clothes and then raised one of them as a zombie, they saw me witnessing this and yet still tried to lure me into a trap anyway "Come over here friend...". I went over there alright...sword first. Now I just need to find who's been murdering people and not stealing their clothes.

Wow, years? Really? LOL, that is so not me. I just started up what I thought was my 14th character last night, but ended up actually being my 15th. I think I have a problem. Image IPB

All this talk about Khajiit in the past couple of days inspired me, but my existing Khajiit character isn't the build I want to play for what I have in mind. Complete opposite, actually. Ashirani was a heavy armor wearing sword and board, whereas Ahdaira is going to be a robe-wearing pure mage (and vampire, I think).

Serana has a bad habit of raising strange beasts to our aid. Sometimes she'll raise a skeever or rabbit, when there's a freaking death hound nearby. I wish she would raise the most powerful, instead of the closest. I'll have to get her a summon staff in this playthrough. I'm only up to level 5, and haven't run across one yet.

Wait, what? Vampires were killing Vigilants, then stealing their clothes? OMG, that's bloody brilliant! I was hoping to hear it would be a murdering mudcrab, but this story is just as good. I can't believe that they also tried to lure you in to their trap. I haven't been witness to any of that yet.

I did have another naked Courier come talk to me in Riften though. That's always fun. Except that there were two thieves running around, a master vampire, and two thralls. Pure epic chaos. The Courier did live through it, though. I think Balimund saved him.

Like I said though I can go months without playing. Depends on my mood, I could be in more of a shooter mood for a few months or have other games to get through. I can't see Skyrim actually lasting years, it's too addictive and I had a job and a life back when I played Oblivion lol, I've overcome those two problems.

I find it odd that the Khajiit are just wandering the roads on their own or working as assassins when I see them. You'd expect a few to band together or fall in with mercs. I've not seen any of these new Khajiit books at all. Will you attempt DG straight away to get access to high level vampirism? I'm getting a ton of diseases since installing DG now that I think about it actually.

Serana's buddies keep freaking me out, you can be sneaking through a tunnel that opens up into a huge hive of Falmer and suddenly the eye is open! Oh crap, rumbled!! My stealth 100 and I'm both muffled and far away, what kind of beasts are these Falmer?! Then you look behind you and there's an undead chaurus halfway up your ass. I find myself having to kill her undead thralls almost as if taking a noisey toy from a naughty child. Something tells me she enjoys it.

The vampire luring attempts seem to happen near bridges, I've had 3 of them I think and I'm pretty sure all 3 were near a bridge. The first was by the wee bridge not far from the cave entrance to Fort Dawnguard, they call you off to the side and then pounce when you get close.

Last night it was south of Markarth somewhere, a small bridge over a raging river and I noticed some commotion, there was a torch in there but it was too far away and too dark to really see. One group went down, the other group hovered by them for a moment, then took off towards the river, as I approached the downed group the others began calling me over, I used detect life and knew what was happening. Then I noticed the downed group were nude, they appeared to be wearing clothes when they were alive. Unfortunately I couldn't find all the vamps bodies to see if they had the clothes on them. Serana blasted some into the river.

Riften is madness during DG, it's like a constant riot going on with guards, vamps, theives and my bloody dog chasing all of them.

The ironic thing is that from a metagame standpoint, avoiding the conflict precisely IS the thing that helps the Thalmor the most.  I would say it's best for Skyrim that you finish the quest line, no matter which side you choose.  It's the endless chaos that they want, they say that right in Ulfric's dossier.

True, but I avoid it entirely (as in not thinking or talking to NPCs about it) because I find it annoying that you're forced to be a patsy for the Thalmor.

Every chance I get, I do slaughter the Thalmor though. Too arrogant for their own good.

Woe betide those who try to lure General Kickass into a trap. Shall I blow them up, freeze their intestines, stop their heart with a well-placed shockbolt or cleave them in half?

I remember the first time I came upon a Thalmor patrol. Walking down the road with their feelings of superiority oozing out of every pore. They were taunted easily enough and killed with that same ease. The journey I embarked upon to find the closest body of water to dump the naked Justiciar corpse in was truly epic. Numerous sabre cats, if I remember right.

@Druss99 - I found one of the Khajiit books in Dead Drop Falls, which you can get to in the back of Fort Dawnguard (just past the dogs). That one was Confessions of a Khajiit Fur Trader, new with DG. That's the only new book I remember finding in the DG side (aside from the Aetherium Wars). Pretty much all of the others I found in the vampire castle. Apparently they read quite a lot, because they have extensive bookcases. Some of the books I thought were new were actually just ones I hadn't read yet. My bad.

According to the wiki, 23 new books and 27 notes/letters (and 8 new spell tomes) were added with DG, so I guess we'll have to keep our eyes open.

Yeah, Riften turns into a madhouse with DG. Every time I go there, not only is it my entourage, the guards, and whoever they're fighting, but if it's during the day, you've got all the NPCs to look out for, too. I was hoping to see Maven Black-Briar in my last playthrough when that happened, but she was busy playing Jarl up in Mistveil Keep. Someone in the midst was throwing shocks around, but it actually wasn't Serana that time.

I have an alchemy question if anyone knows.... I need to find 10 Nightshade and Nirnroot for Ingun Black-Briar, and i was wondering if anyone knew if they spawned more in certain places

Not a farm, but for a one time visit, the Labyrinthian quest for the College of magic appeared to have quite a lot of Nightshad; went through it again last night. And according to the Wiki, there seems to be plenty outside of the quest area within the vicinity, too.

P.S. After all this time and a clear night, I discover there is an actual clear, easy path to the place. I have scaled mountains, jumped over boulders, shimmied up slopes; did not know one could actually take the stairs.....

I hate heavy snow, too.

Yeah, I kinda see her as my "Immortal Beloved", too.

She's absolutely ruined me on other followers, though. Shame, that. And here my new Khajiit was planning a party with Kharjo or J'Zargo. Hmm. Might still happen.

From what I understand, your vampire lord powers actually work better if Serana is not a follower. I was glad someone told me that, because I was thinking they seemed pretty weak, at least initially.

In part I'm really starting to not like Dawnguard.

Those stupid vampire raids have honestly taken away most reasons I have of going to whiterun. The smiths are dead a few other traders, I now can't go near a city at night, or stay overnight without fear of several others getting killed -_-

I could reload, big deal just ANOTHER four hours of progress lost.

I haven't had any issues with NPCs dying off, since my first run through DG (Poor Shadr)...except once, a couple of days ago. I fast traveled to Riften, and got the naked Courier, delivering a letter of inheritance for Edda's death. I had to find her body, to figure out who she was. Anyway, I decided to do something else, and reloaded. The next time I fast traveled there, just a short time later, we were able to quell the thieves and vampires, and she made it through it. She was the only (almost) NPC casualty in that entire run.

I think I mentioned it last week sometime, but if you fast travel to somewhere inside the city other than the main city gates, the vampires don't seem to be such a menace. Like the Thieves Guild or Mistveil Keep in Riften, or Dragonsreach in Whiterun, or the Blue Palace in Solitude. Give it a shot, maybe, and see if it helps? Maybe I just got really lucky on my timing every time.

I do do that, the crazy bastard I've seen twice now will run up the city and just fight everyone along the way. Like wise just like in oblivion everyone and his grand mother will run out to fight them.

Its like oblivion, a ghost is chasing me and I'm left with half a town. The AI is stupid. Ah well I think I'm just taking a break from skyrim till a patch of some sort is out, or the next DLC. I'm not playing a game where I have to body guard a town anytime I just want to walk inside.

Plus its the small ones and even outside. Heck alot of folks ourside of whiterun are dead thanks to hellhounds. I've lost like 7 NPC's in the last 4 hours because I like to run out of a town, and in, heck I had to reload one save not long ago as while sitting around in dragons reach almost the whole town was killed.

Ah well, least its not everynight seems random. But still I've seen alot of people not happy with it.

^ Your game sounds like it's been really badly bugged. That is truly a bummer. Well, I hope they fix all that stuff soon. It would be nice if it could be fixed before the PC and PS3 DLC is available.

I did notice a radiant quest in the vampire side burped on me. I got the same quest to do something that I had already done. I kept trying to do it, to no avail. I ended up having to reload and time things just right to get past it. Apparently you have to finish up a quest and accept a new one at the same time, or things just go bonkers. My first mistake was turning one in, then leaving, then coming back.

My second mistake was not doing what they verbally suggested that I do, and instead, doing what the quest log told me to do. I know better. Tricky Bethesda. Any "suggestions" mean "go do it, or something will break".

I try to do that anyway. If I ever bungle something up and lose 4 hours, like I did at the start of the vampire questline, it's a good reminder for me to save like a maniac. I usually have at least 3 saves for any character, and alternate between them periodically. It's usually a "reminder" like that one that whips me back into shape.

Another thing I learned in that playthrough was to wait until you're attacked to fight back, unless you want to make the entire vampire castle hostile. Even in vampire lord form, I didn't last long against them, any of the 5 or 6 times I tried it.

Do people really have that much trouble with vampire attacks? Between me (and a follower if one is handy), guards, and town citizens we lay the beatdown on the bloodsuckers pretty quick. The vampires will usually switch targets when one of the NPCs drops to their knee, so deaths aren't as problematic as they would be otherwise.

I'm going to teach you all a secret that I discovered the other day, though - it's called... Vegetable Soup! Haha! Wasn't expecting that, were you? It will constantly restore your stamina by 1 point per second for about 720 seconds, and since a power attack or shield bash only requires 1 point of stamina to use, you can power attack and bash as many times as you want!

Very handy against very tough opponents who might otherwise stomp your face in, like dragons, Master Vampires, and Bandit Chiefs early on - so make a few of them and use them when you're in a tight spot.
