@Happy Daiz: It was Ancient I was wondering about, after that battle I fear Revered and Legendary would hand me my ass. I could have sworn I faced Ancient ones before but they looked different and didn't give me nearly as much trouble. Possibly just my imagination. I did face some named ones after that and they weren't nearly as troublesome, I think you might know the ones I mean given previous info...

@ Giggles Manically: Yeah, the level scaling makes the game infinately more playable. I could barely play Oblivion when I figured out the level scaling, it all felt a bit pointless. Skyrim has found an excellent balance now, I was in fear of being overpowered for a while but not anymore.

My friend got the "Free Enchantment" mod.

So he can enchant anything with anything.
So his mage walks around in normal clothes better enchanted then anything you get in the game.

That's pretty awesome. I was going to try something like that with my Redguard, but got distracted by Dawnguard. My thought was to buy some Alik'r clothes from Radiant Raiment, and enchant them, but never did do it. Or maybe even Fine Clothes, but meh. The hats make my characters look bald.

@Druss - yeah, I know the two that you mean. I didn't think those were particularly difficult, either. Just use Marked for Death once or twice, then tap them a few times. Done and done. Right after leaving that location, I think I did have to fight an Ancient, and it was much worse. I still can't imagine what it's like to fight tougher ones than that.

I just encountered an ancient dragon on my level 45 character for the first time. I was about to storm northwatch keep (partly because I don’t like having Thalmor on my new doorstep) when it attacked, luckily it was focused mostly on the Thalmor but they were dead in pretty short order. I used up all of my ebony arrows and a good portion of my potions. It had also just turned morning which didn’t help my vampire much. What made it annoying though was that it kept on flying away and then coming back with more health.

The Archmage's robes make it all worthwhile.

OK, that gives me hope. I'm not a huge fan of the look of the Archmage's robes, but I'm sure they're better than the crap I'm wearing right now.

Right after Bleak Falls Barrow, I went to that Talos shrine near Riverwood, and lifted the Thalmor robes off the dead Thalmor there, and wore those for a while, but the enchantment is awful. 12% destruction magic cost reduction? That's it? Why is it that the Thalmor got the best-looking mage robes in the whole stinking game? Arrgh. And the whole outfit looked really awesome on my Khajiit.

I'd like to get my enchanting high enough that I can make a decent Vaermina's robe. Or...another option is Vampire clothes. Sounds funny, but I hoofed it to Markarth, and went inside the farm (right outside the city gates), and a Master Vampire followed us in. Once dead, I saw that he was wearing just Vampire "clothes", not armor. This must be a leveling thing. None of them we've encountered have been wearing straight-up Vamp armor yet.

@Druss - I think I was fighting Ancient dragons with my Nord, who was in the 40s for level. Are you wondering about Revered or Legendary, or Ancient? I still haven't seen Revered or Legendary, but if they attack my new character at level 8, that will be one more Khajiit rug in Skyrim.

Archmage robes

Mods for the win!

I always play my mages in robes.  The best robes before the archmage is the free ones you get entering the college (if you've got the coin eventually buy the higher level versions from Farelda).

Once you get the hang of it survivng is pretty easy.  You'll have to move around a bit more than normal and I typically summon a frost atronach between any bad guy and me who ignores my follower (note there is a staff of summon frost atronach in the Mage Quarters on a shelf near his bed [it's on the garden wall] - steal this as a holdover before you get Sanguine's staff).

I also use the dragon shout slow time a lot.  I actually think this shout is one of the best ones and highly underrated for all play styles.  And have Kyne's peace qued up when traveling off road to watch out for saber cat ambushes!

If you're a vampire character, weapons with absorb health, magicka, or stamina are great for fights during the day. -60 points doesn't seem like much, but for a lower-level character, that's a serious handicap.

I gave Serana a mace with health absorb in my last playthrough, and it worked out great. That, and she's a veritable health and magicka tank.

@Joy - thanks for the tips! I don't even remember where to get Slow Time. I'll have to look that one up. The only shout I have right now is one word of Unrelenting Force. My instinct is to immediately join the DB for MfD, but I'm trying to stick to the mage quest line.

I did get slightly better mage robes (apprentice, instead of novice), but I'd rather them be robes of alteration. I'm going to that fort to get the books back from the rogue mages next, so hopefully I'll find something of use there.

^ Serana is so good I'm starting to get the feeling that I'm her sidekick instead of the other way around.

@ Lone Triarii: That seems to be a theme with Ancient Dragons, mine kept flying away too. I summoned Durnhevir to see if he could help pin it down but he didn't seem to do a whole lot. Which left me with no dragon rend and having to wait the damn thing out.

I seem to be stuck with 2 Elder Scrolls in my inventory that I can't get rid of. Thats 40 points of carry weight thats bringing me down.

I use Harkon’s sword for it’s absorb health, magicka and stamina. I like carrying it along with Dragonbane so I can pretend that I’m a vampire samurai.

If I have a hard fight and it’s during the day I’ll use Ariel’s bow but it can sometimes be difficult to find the sun depending on the terrain and time of day.

Harkon's Sword + Serana = WIN

Anyway, I'm really liking my new character - I'm glad I switched back to one-handed weapons and started using shields again. I have to admit that I underestimated the usefulness of the bleeding damage perk that you get from axes - it's basically a permanent poison, and it's good against trolls especially.

Don't think I'll ever go back to Heavy Armor, though - Light Armor is... well... lighter (which means I don't have to bother with the Steed Stone), has good enough defense, and has way better perks. It also gives me a reason to hold onto dragon bones and scales. Go Light, or go home.

@Druss - those Elder Scrolls shouldn't weigh anything. Quest items don't count towards your encumbrance. I think I was bellyaching about that some time ago, and Yrkoon set me straight.

I summoned Durneviir for the first time when I was on the Throat of the World, fighting Alduin. It was daytime, my character was a vampire, I'd forgotten to bring Dragonsbane, yada yada yada, it didn't go well.

@green - yeah, I also went back to light armor, at least in this playthrough. Well, mage robes, but it keeps adding skill level-ups to light armor, so yay? I haven't been messing with smithing at all, so I'm a long way from Dragonscale, which is my light armor fave.

@Lone - if you don't have Harkon's sword, and you don't have Auriel's Bow, you gotta do something 'til then. Image IPB

MfD is great vs dragons and dragon priests which take time to kill as destruction mages (and probably more useful vs them than slow time) but the mobility and "Oh ****!" avoidence factor which slow time gives a robed mage I find a lot more helpful in regular encounters and against angry deathlords and their ebony weapons which one-shot you.  You get 1 slow time at Labyinthine and 1 early in the civil war quest.  If you aren't joing sides in the war, I forget where the third is but that shout is so useful I'd make an effort to explore there.  Ice form which you get at Sarenthaal is also a good "Oh Crap" shout, but has the disadvantage of such a long cooldown time.

Looks like I missed a lot of fun by not playing with a follower until Aela the Huntress became my waifu, but it does sound horrible. =D

@ Joy - it looks like aside from Labyrinthian, Slow Time is at Hag's End and Korvanjund (civil war one).

Hag's End. *shivers* I hate witches and hagravens. Especially the two near Bard's Leap, that are busy performing the Briar Heart surgery on a Forsworn. So creepy.

I think the worst thing about the Hagravens isn't the dark magic, ritual sacrifices or even their appearance. It's the god-awful sound of their breathing. Creeps me the hell out.

Yeah, Melka is pretty cool. I think it's funny that she calls everyone a Breton, unless they're an Orc or Argonian - then they're an Orc. Image IPB

Her staff is pretty handy, too.

I always kill her after getting her staff - I simply can't suffer the Forsworn or any of the foul creatures associated with them to live.

I do like her staff, though - very nice of her to hand it to me before I stab her in the kidneys. >:D

Apparently the Dovahkiin once had a thing for Moira

What, you didn't go about it in the honorable way by blowing her up with her own staff?

I've never had the heart to turn on Melka, but last time I went through her tower she and Petra both managed to kill each other. It was tragic, really.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the Dovahkiin was just using Moira to get closer to that hussy Esmerelda.

Moira dies. Melka lives. That's my sense of balance. I'd kill Esmerelda too, if I knew where she was. I never said I was fair.

The hagraven breathing is really awful. So is the screeching. Bethesda really nailed it in regard to sounds in Skyrim.

There is a bug with the Shout in the Civil War quest; may wish to get this one first, as it does not like being added later.

I went up to bard's leap the other day. I love all the conversations you hear while sneaking. I remember a group of Forsworn sitting by the fire taking about their friend becoming a briarheart and how he was a “true Reachman”.

And how could anyone forget about Moira, that was the creepiest encounter I remember.
