Anyway I feared the worst with the vampires in DG but I've been very pleasantly surprised and without giving any spoilers I'd urge those on the fence with worries caused by the modern vampire craze to take a chance on DG, hopefully you will be as pleasantly surprised as me.
Edit: Damn it, ninja'd by future Jarl Olaf.

LOL. Serana is not exactly without her bad qualities - join with Harkon and stay at his castle, and she'll sit down at the "dinner" table like anyone else there. Surely she must have been there and partook in the torment and slaughter of the thousands of people the vampires have no doubt enthralled and devoured over the centuries.
Not to mention that going a few days without feeding would probably turn her into the same hideous looking creature the other vampires in the Castle look like (I'll assume going days without feeding will indeed make you more obviously a vampire in terms of looks).
The only reason I wouldn't think her a complete monster is because my characters are always werewolves who tear people limb from limb and feast on their entrails without remorse - so I'm not much better, am I? XD
(Harkon acknowledges you as a werewolf when you meet him, BTW - I liked that little detail)

Even though I almost never transform, defeating the point of having lycanthropy a bit. I guess my Dovahkiin will have to do that with his bare hands.
All right, I've decided that I will defeat the final boss of Dawnguard with naught but my Daedric gauntlets. And the occasional Close Wounds.

The quality of the two books has nothing to do with it, matey - they still both feature the "sexy and seductive" vampire archetype. Now let's drop this and get back to discussing the topic at hand, if you don't mind.
I was simply objecting to lumping the two together in any way, that's all there is to it. I'd like to think there was more to the Anne Rice vampires than simply "sexy and seductive", but I haven't read any Anne Rice in quite a few years.
Speaking of Skyrim and vampires, I am hoping there's a little more meat to the story in Dawnguard other than just "evil vampires, kill or join?". I did become a vampire in Skyrim once and I tried it in Morrowind as well and there wasn't much to it. It just seemed like a handicap really.
I also happen to have a question for all you sneaky types: I have a sneaky character for the first time but I have only invested very little in the sneaking tree. How worthwhile would you say more points in the first skill is, and how well does the whole Shadow Warrior thing work?

With Shadow Warrior, you can basically run a small distance away out of sight of enemies, crouch and wait for them to lose aggro. I believe the wiki also mentions that you can use the time window between enemies losing focus on you and then reacquiring it to quickly sneak attack them. All in all, if your character is the sneaky type, I certainly think Shadow Warrior is a worthy addition to your set of abilities.termokanden wrote...

@ Greengoron; I've only played through the DG side so I've not seen much of Serana's more vampiric side. I suppose adding a mechanic where you have to manage her various stages of vampirism and feeding would have got annoying after a while.
I just finished DG about 10 minutes ago. As far as DLC goes I'd give it a 10/10.

You don't have to manage her vampirism as far as I'm aware - I'm merely conjecturing that her and her family's more human-like appearance is due to feeding regularly, as I think the vampire's appearance changes to the more monstrous form the longer you go without feeding.
Anyway, I haven't done the vampire side of the quest - I just let Harkon turn me into a Vampire Lord once just to explore Castle Volkihar a bit and talk to the other resident vampires, then reloaded and refused his gift. While I walked around the castle in that time though I saw Serana sit down at the dinner table with the other freaks - didn't witness her eating a thrall but I think you can assume she does it along with the rest of them.
Face it: vampires are mostly wicked creatures - Serana and Valerica are nice people but they are still predators just like any other vampire. So just don't think Serana is all sweet and innocent.
Also, putting any points in Stealth past the first one is a major waste - and Shadow Warrior is unnecessary as well IMHO.

Haha, you can turn Serana back into her human form after the DLC is over. Though her dialogue remains unchanged, I believe. *end spoilers*

What difference does curing her actually make gameplaywise?

I don't know as I haven't convinced her to cure herself, but I imagine she will no longer use Vampiric Drain, be able to turn you into a vampire, or make Bloodcursed Arrows for you. She will also likely run away if you use your howl as a werewolf, whereas if she remains a vampire she will be immune to it.

So the only people who would cure Serana of her vampirism are roleplayers. =D

Actually, cured!Serana keeps all her spells including vampiric drain, oddly enough. Though, yes, you do lose the option to have her turn you into a vampire. On the plus side, you can cast healing spells on her and no longer have to worry about friendly fire from AoE powers that harm the undead. Also, as one might expect, she'll show up when using detect life.

Stealth (the bottom, 5/5 perk) is actually not that great at all, you can essentially ignore it after spending that initial point that gives you access to everything else on the tree. (and eventually, you'll find a simple ring or necklace that will give you better sneak than if you had spent 4 points on that perk) On the other hand, the next perk on the left (Muffled movement), you'll want to take that one as soon as you can, because it makes a huge difference in your sneak success rate, especially if you're wearing heavier armor.
The Backstab Perks on the right - are game changers. Depending on your build, they will define it. Not much more to say about them as their descriptions speak for themselves.
Lightfoot, silent roll, and silence are alright. Lightfoot is probably the best of the bunch (no more triggering pressure plates when you walk over them. yea!) but in the end they're more like extras for convenience and/or roleplaying.
Lastly, Shadow Warrior: If you're an archer, shadow warrior's true potential probabaly won't show itself to you. But If you're a melee type it's the best perk in the tree. It's magic. If you're in front of an enemy fully detected and fighting, just crouch and Poof! (literally, in a cloud of smoke) You're Gone. so your next attack, or even next series of attacks become backstabs. If you're wielding daggers this usually means the instant death of the opponent. I've lost count of the number of Giants and pesky mages I've killed using Shadow Warrior

I then roamed about the city, looking for any quests I might have missed. A courier ran up to me, delivering a letter of inheritance. I was frightened that an NPC friend of mine got killed in a random dragon attack or something, and with fear in my heart, I opened the letter. Guess whose inheritance it was?
Ondolemar's, whom I had just killed with my hands.
Just wanted to share that with you.

Goes without saying I have the backstabbing perks. Bought them as soon as I could.
The muffled movement perk looks fine, but I also have the perk that makes light armor weightless. If it doesn't weigh anything, surely there's no weight penalty for sneaking?
But even as an archer, I have to say that Shadow Warrior sounds promising. Just for all those times when I don't quite kill them before they reach me or when I forget to sneak and someone sees me.
Silent roll? Sounds useless. But I have to pick it up anyway so I guess we'll see.

As you know, walking around in a crouch is a slow thing. But if you keep silent rolling, it's almost like sprinting, you cover a lot of ground fast. But IMO it looks silly and really, stealth characters who need to sprint should just un-crouch and do the real thing.

crossbows and the bolts that explode on impact. He has fun having an armored troll follow him. He cured Serana of her vampirism.
As for me. I greatly enjoyed being a vampire lord. Especially when once a day I could change the sky to remove my penalties. I also am in love with the ability to summon gargoyles. Not the best summon out there, but with all my range spells, gargoyle, and poisoned claws, I felt more than confidant that I could take on almost all opponents. Even faced Harkon as a vampire. He and I, two vampire lords duking it out for control of the castle.

I prefer to take all the perks, and leave other options for gear besides Fortify Sneak bonuses; season for personal taste.
But Shadow Warrior is terrific for an archer, too; hovering dragons that stop breathing fire and go huh? never gets old in my games. It also allows for an extra shot or two occasionally.
One downside to heavy Sneak is sometimes a needed Dragon soul will fly by unaware, so with Shadow Warrior you may choose to remain upright for speed in travel and gain notice of opponents, than fade from view with a single move.
This is the one perk tree I alwaus fill; way to much fun to skip.
