Personally, I don't know why they bother adding companions to ARPGs. If you aren't puppeting the companions (which you can't really do in an ARPG) what do they add to the gameplay? They just make some missions easier (with the AI, it's often the opposite effect) and in most of these games, the gameplay is easy enough.
Well in New Vegas they give you companion perks, which can be very useful, and you can use them to carry extra loot. Companions are actually very powerful in combat in New Vegas as well. There are also companions who have useful abilities like ED-E who can act as a workbench or reloading bench and can hand out a bit of ammo and help repair your weapon.
In Skyrim, I avoid them like the plague because they can actually die, and I hate that.
I like followers for the company and because they add roleplay color to the world.
