Ah yes, those guys. I was just about to see an encounter with them trying to kidnap a redguard when a dragon swooped in and killed everyone. It's seriously annoying when that happens. Dragons really are the cliffracers of Skyrim.

Anyway over 1000 hours played? I can't keep up with that. Wish I had more free time.

Aye, Belethor used to be on my hit list, but I had to take him off to preserve the general store in Whiterun. I always thought Sigurd would take over for Belethor - but I guess not. Seems I'm stuck with that obnoxious ass of a shopkeeper.

I think Sigurd will hang himself.

I don't understand why Heimskr is so hated. He preaches about Talos in an Imperial-controlled city, potentially earning him the ire of the Thalmor. Doing what the Thalmor dislike makes you my friend.

I love Heimskr.  All he's doing is preaching the truth.  He's not even fazed when his home gets destroyed.  Plus he's the one and only repository of Michael Kirkbride writing in the game.  Reminds me of the prophet from Knights of the Nine, who probably was an avatar of Talos.  I don't think Heimskr is, but his place at this stage in Nirn's history can't be underestimated.  If Talos falls, it all falls.  He's standing at a precipice and saying "go back."  Dude's alright with me.

He's got more balls than Balgruuf, that's for sure.  I get more irritated with that guy every time I do Missing In Action.  That was all a setup to lure out other Greymanes, and Balgruuf would have just let it happen.  His "neutrality" is more sinister than it appears.

He may be annoying but he really is pointing out the real underlying reason for the Thalmor.

Balgruff fulfills that old motto: "He who hesitates is lost".
Its kind off odd that Skyrim has TWO villains going on though.

Both the Thalmor AND Alduin.
I REALLY want a DLC about the Thalmor, mostly about killing them though.

Decapitate them, filet them, disembowel them, stick a sword down their throats, burn them, freeze them, electrocute them, make a pincushion out of them, punch them, FUS RO DAH them off a cliff, ...

The possibilities are endless.

Balgruuf is a lying ass hole - he intended to side with the Empire the entire time, and you can see it long before Message to Whiterun ever takes place. All of his guards carry Imperial blades, his brother never shuts up about "taking the fight to the Stormcloaks", and Whiterun is labeled as "Imperial" on the map upstairs.

His neutrality is a facade - he's an Imperial suck-up just like the Battle-Borns. He's also deluded - he says "we Nords are the Empire." Obviously that's complete bulls*** - the Empire consists mostly of smarmy Imperials who think they own everything, and the other provinces and their denizens are their property. General Tullius at least also seems to think the Nords are trash, and never misses a chance to insult them right in front of his Nord second-in-command.

Anyway, have fun sulking in the basement of the Blue Palace, you phony.

Alduin is only a villain for the casual player who doesn't get into the lore. He's not really a villain, as Paarthurnax and Arngeir tell you. He's like the hurricane or the epidemic that forces mortal beings to confront themselves. It's a crisis, but you don't really blame the force for doing what it's made to do. You're just restoring balance by reminding him that his job is to eat the world, not rule and dominate it.

Same with Mehrunes Dagon from Oblivion. For the casual player, he serves as the big bad. But he's actually cursed to do what he does, and is no more evil by nature than your average daedra.

As for the Thalmor, well it's interesting. I actually wondered today if Talos feels trapped by his role. If he wouldn't be tempted by the Thalmor's "offer" to cast him down and unmake the world. Probably not, but it would be so awesome if they gave us a chance to talk to him about it all.

Tiber Septim was a Nord though, so technically, they're right when they say that Nords are the Empire.

I dunno, I like the Imperial Jarls much better...well, at least the ones that get the position when/if the Stormcloaks are removed.

I always felt terrible seeing Idgrod in the basement of the Blue Palace. And Balgruuf was obviously siding with the Imperials/Emperor. All you had to do was ask him a question about the war, and he basically said as much. Or walk into the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm - Ulfric and his cronie were always (literally, always) talking about Balgruuf, and taking his city. If that doesn't make it clear, I don't know what else is necessary.

No one really knows who Tiber was. Hjalti Early-Beard sure sounds like a Nord name to me. But he was said to be smaller in stature, while Nords are usually tall and hefty. The ambiguity allowed him to be claimed by both Bretons and Nords, though, which was good for unifying his empire.

The Elder Scrolls wiki tells me that the Nedes were assimilated into the other human races during the First Era, and Tiber Septim was responsible for declaring the Third Era, so I don't think that's right.

Not according to the Imperials, they ain't - they banned the worship of Talos and seem to have zero respect for the Nords. They're just lowly citizens who owe them unyielding loyalty, no matter how much s*** the Empire makes them eat.

I say the Empire needs to be taken down a peg - apparently, getting their asses kicked by the Dominion wasn't enough to put them in their place. I tried to find a silver lining in siding with the Empire, but as someone who has never liked the Imperials all the way back to Morrowind, I can't pass up the opportunity to open up a can of whoop ass on them.

I also feel... dirty siding with them and killing Stormcloaks. I hated doing that side of the Civil War, and wanted to punch the Legionnaires and all of the sycophants who suddenly thought I was a hero for killing those evil, traitorous Stormcloaks. Particularly the Battle-Borns - if there's one clan I'd never want to be praised by, it's those suck-ups.

LOL  You can't really blame Balgruuf for the interwebz always insisting that he's "neutral."  I never had any doubt that he's imperial or that Whiterun is an imperial hold.  And the fact that he just presumes you're imperial, as well, is also irritating.  You do him a favor and suddenly he gets to dictate your stance on the war.  But that, too, is more game tomfoolery.  It would be nice if you at least got a chance to argue with him about it, if not bring him over to Ulfric's side.

Gerdur mentions that he and Ulfric had personal issues going back a long time.  I always wonder what those are and how much that affects his stance.  The thought I had is that he could have been jealous of Ulfric being chosen by the Greybeards.  He says he envies the dragonborn being summoned, for instance.

Good god, if there was one thing that would make me pause at siding with the Empire it would be them. Them and the Black Brairs. Scum, all of them

EDIT: And I proof I'm an idiot by mixing up the Battle Borns (who are annoying) with the Silver Bloods (who aren't even sided with the Empire).

<facepalm>

I'm gonna try to get Ulfric to give up The Pale in Season Unending - I can't kill Brina Merilis or Horik Halfhand, but I think they get exiled after you take back The Pale once the war is back on. All I know is that I want them out of Dawnstar, permanently - I want to make it clear to these louts that if you support the Empire, you're an enemy of the state and will be dealt with as such.

The Battle-Borns aren't the only one who have annoying family members. The Gray-Manes have Olfina the annoying feminist, as well.

Heh, Olfina eases up on you a bit after Vignar becomes Jarl - she says "It's a fine day with you around" and talks about her duties as Housecarl instead of chastising you for being a man (or giving you a pep talk if you're a woman).

How is Olfina annoying? I think she's cool, but I hear she flirts with male PCs. She's my pick for Whiterun jarl. Vignar gets it, but he's as old as the hills so he'll kick off soon enough.

By the way, if Vignar dies as Jarl, Olfina becomes the next Jarl of Whiterun.
