Hmm... well, I upgraded my gear a bit and I seem to be doing somewhat better now, at least - I also used a nifty little trick with Grelka in Riften: I paid her to train my Light Armor (which was very expensive), then turned around and sold a bunch of junk jewelry and other crap I'd accumulated and got all of my money back. I'll try to do that more often when I'm bursting at the seams with treasure and need to dump it all in one go.
Uncertain if this will help, but if you do have Smithing or Enchantment, it may be profitable to use those skills on said junk before re-sale. A problem may be finding wealthy merchants, but this may be a better problem than being broke.
As far as crafting being a fix for characters, it can solve the issues, but it is not required; same for high SR. These make the game easier (eg; one needs less gear with SR over indv Elemental protections), but the game's success does not mandate said usage.
Same could be said of any Skill, I guess, as I prefer Sneaking and Archery for all of my characters, but there are other viable ways to make a decent PC.
Worst run I made was with a Mage trying to focus on Destruction early. While viable, it took far more work than it was worth to me. Re-loading at an earlier save and altering the focus to later in the design helped a lot.
