Hmm... well, I upgraded my gear a bit and I seem to be doing somewhat better now, at least - I also used a nifty little trick with Grelka in Riften: I paid her to train my Light Armor (which was very expensive), then turned around and sold a bunch of junk jewelry and other crap I'd accumulated and got all of my money back. I'll try to do that more often when I'm bursting at the seams with treasure and need to dump it all in one go.

Uncertain if this will help, but if you do have Smithing or Enchantment, it may be profitable to use those skills on said junk before re-sale. A problem may be finding wealthy merchants, but this may be a better problem than being broke.

As far as crafting being a fix for characters, it can solve the issues, but it is not required; same for high SR. These make the game easier (eg; one needs less gear with SR over indv Elemental protections), but the game's success does not mandate said usage.

Same could be said of any Skill, I guess, as I prefer Sneaking and Archery for all of my characters, but there are other viable ways to make a decent PC.

Worst run I made was with a Mage trying to focus on Destruction early. While viable, it took far more work than it was worth to me. Re-loading at an earlier save and altering the focus to later in the design helped a lot.

I need to work on my Smithing, too. Ugh. I'm still running around in default TG armor (well, with one piece upgraded). I don't want Smithing to be one of my main skills, but I really want to get it to at least 60 to do arcane smithing. My character is still at a lowly 41. I know to make jewelry, but I've yet to take the time to dig up some ore.

I've been lamenting doing the Retrieve the Horn of Jorgen Windcaller quest, with only one word of Whirlwind Sprint in my vocabulary. I can never seem to get through that stupid 3 stones, 3 doors business without at least two words of WS, and end up getting frustrated. In this playthrough, I got all the way up to that point, tried it about 20 times, and left, with my head bowed in shame.

So I'm wandering around last night, near Mor Khazgur (where you can recruit Borgakh the Steel Heart as a follower), and saw arches of a Nordic ruin nearby. So I climb the hill, and see that there's a word wall. Sweet! Then I noticed the dragon priest coffin in front of it. Doing a quick save, and mustering my ambition, I ran over to get the word, and braced for impact.

Illia and I (haven't got Aranea yet) did ok, until she started using the Staff of Summon Frost Atronach. One of us must have done some friendly fire on it, because it turned on us. Right when I shot the killing fireball on Volsung, I look over to see Illia getting stabbed by the Frost Atronach. Deader than a doornail.

Seriously? *sigh* I reloaded.

At this point, I had no idea what the word was, but when I did the reloaded game, noted that it was another word of Whirlwind Sprint. That made everything worth it. Apparently that was also the back way in to Volskygge.

This used to give me trouble too.  Drove me crazy. I've got it down to a subconscious level where I can do it just about every time now so while I can do it, it is difficult to explain.  I'm pretty sure the key is to be pushing whatever key/pad you console dudes use to go foward (it's "W" by defualt for PC users).

THinking about it these are the steps I do.

1) Line myself up so going straight will put me through the gate
2) Hit both the "forward" and "sprit" buttons
3) Use Whirlwind shout (let go of sprint button)
4) As long as the forward button is still pressed and you aligned youself correctly, you should go through the gates,

Well, I thought I knew what I was doing. I mean, this is the 14th character I've done this quest with. Or maybe 13th...Anyway.

I don't know what the heck I was doing wrong, but now that you mention it, I wonder if I wasn't hitting forward on LS while doing the shout. If that's what it was, wow. I seem to be better at killing dragon priests than understanding the simple mechanics of a puzzle.

Well, regardless, I have the second word now, so if I don't make it through this time, I shouldn't be playing.

Thanks for the advice. Image IPB

The horn of the windcaller, can be tricky if you don't know more than 1 whirlwind shout, it took me a couple of times, I run forward and a few steps after I get past the final stone activate it. It usually gets you through, if you're quick.

You don't have to have smithing as one of your main skills if you're a mage, or unless you get the nightingale armour, but at least you only have to fill in the light armour options, so you anly need to sink in about half the perk points. Although I always think it's useful for equiping my followers, like Lydia who tends to die too easily. I've given her legendary Ebony armour, which I had lying around. Same with Aela, she's got dragon scale armour and a dragon bone bow. Doing that really speeds up the smithing progression, and it doesn't feel like you're grinding. As you can now pick and choose followers without worrying so much about them ending up in Sovenguard if you don't pay attention for 5 minutes.

Edit:

Oh yes, and asking the Grey beards about words of power is glitched on my game, the drain vitality word is stuck on the miscellaneous quest even though I already have it, and they won't give me another location now, and I refuse to kill Parth, so the Blades won't help me either, with new word locations >.< Thank God for the Wiki.

You know I seriously wonder why they have so many spells in Skyrim.

Fireball solves all problems.
Ever.

The question I have: How did Delphine get past that test? I mean, is there a legitimate IG method to bypass the need to sprint?

^ Hmm. Maybe I should go recruit Borgakh the Steel Heart. Right now, it's just my Khajiit mage and Illia, both Destruction mages, so neither of us have had a need for armor at all, really. For any other class, I'm sure my smithing would be far past Arcane by this point.

I normally outfit my followers in gear that's comparable to my own. If they're not a success, I'm not a success. Plus, it's fun to give them weapons with paralyze enchantments.

If only the lightning spells were as awesome as what Cole can do in Infamous...that would be pretty sweet.

I got a mod that makes spells level as you go.
And yes I do shout that at times.

Like when I take on a dragon, I stagger it then use Marked For Death THEN use lightning storm.
Suck it you over grown bat!

I think any creature will activate the stones...as long as you can get said creature to stand there and don't mind leaving it/him/her there getting through the gate isn't a problem.

That's what I thought, too, but when I was in there, I had Lydia wait in various locations around the stones, then walked away, to try out that theory. She didn't activate them.

I don't know if that's normal, or a bug. Since Dawnguard, I'm noticing some strange little things here and there that aren't working quite right.

Damn, I'm on the console so that's not an option. I'm still at the stage where I haven't decided whether to do all out destruction magic, lightning predominantly with a touch of restoration or go for archery, which is already at 87.

At this pint I've already maxed out Smithing, Single handed, Heavy armour and Enchanting with perks or I've allocated perks points for paticular perks so even on Master difficulty I'm almost untouchable, damage wise, only fire mages cause me any worry now. So it's just a case of which is the most fun and looks the coolest. I'm tempted to go for destruction, as with the enchanting perks my current lack of magica is heavily mitigated with the equipment I can craft.

I wasn't aware that magic didn't level, I've never really used it before. But I know you get higher ranked spells like thunderbolt rather than sparks so maybe that's why?

You can easily eliminate  spell costs after some enchantment perks.

Perhaps, but I believe I tried placing a dead guard on that once and it failed to remain open. There is a guard right there if someone wants to give it a try.

^ Huh. I don't remember seeing any dead guards in there; it was all undead of some kind (skeletons, draugr). I'll have to take another look when I go back.

My first attempt at a Khajitt has been positive; was able to best the dragon at the Western Watchtower with arrows, and a few dramatic claw strikes for the kill. While claws will soon become an inferior choice, it does give a nice boost to the early stages of the game.

Believe there is one on top of the stairs to the right as you are facing the desried exit. And you have to make whatever it is dead....

Oh, there was a skeleton archer up there, but that was it. I'm not sure how you could pick up its bones once you kill it to drop it in front of one of those stones.

Like I said, I tried to get Lydia to activate the stones, but she wouldn't. And that girl is a tank.

*spoiler alert*

Damn, after you begin Touching the Sky, the vampires really amp up the attacks big time - I've been attacked multiple times out on the roads just on my way to the next location - I guess Harkon and his crew have figured out that I have the Elder Scrolls and know the location of the bow, and is sending everyone he's got to nab me and Serana before I can get it. :o

Yeah; I do not think it will work, as I am fairly certain I gave it a test based on a sim NWN puzzle. But the question remains is how Delphine managed it; have wondered if there is actually a hidden passage around there like the spider tunnels seen later.

No, you're right.  Now that I think about it, none of the followers activated them.
