Sorry to deviate from the discussion at hand, but what are peoples' thoughts on Illusion magic? I'm gonna play a vampire mage character and I wanna know if it's worth pursuing as a skill.

Yes it is. For a Sneak-centric character anyway. It's actually a pretty overpowered tree that will trivialize most of your battles.

Frenzing enemies and making them fight each other never gets old. But one fun and easily overlooked fact is that Calm/Pacify perfectly sets the stage for sneak-attacks (which cannot be done with Paralysis/Mass). Enemies turn friendly and don't mind exposing their backs to you in the middle of the fight, having you in plain sight. Chaining backstabs is easy and fun this way. And it rapidly levels Sneak also.
Calm in one hand, a dagger in the other.... a match made in heavens :)
And I love Assasin's Blade :)
With that and the DB gloves you don't even need the 5 one-handed mastery perks to be effective (the other perks in one-handed would be a waste with a dagger and spell anyway).

This playstyle does require a hefty perk investment in the Illusion tree to stay effective throught the game but IMO its absolutely worth it. It's my favourite skillset - by far. If you start with an Altmer, you can use this tactics almost immediately... well need to buy Calm first... from Whiterun for example.

True, it's ineffective against some enemies. Master of the Mind requires 90 Illusion, which will usually only happen late in the game.
And even if your have that, there are still dragons.  Invisibility and Sneak would get you through most Undead/Automaton encounters, but it's slow and tedious.
That's why I'd recommend levelling Archery as well. Mainly for the Undead and Dragons... and it's a fine fighting style on its own also. Bound Bow is great for such a character, you don't need to dabble in the crafts to have great weapons.. and you don't really need armors. Two perks in Conjuration for Mystic Binding work wonders.
Blade of Woe is steel, so it can be effectively tempered with minimal perk investemnt (needs Arcane Smithing tho), if you feel like it.

I couldn't kill Cicero because even though he is annoying he is one of the most well developed characters in the game. I was more entertained by his madness then annoyed by it. I wish other characters had been given this much attention. The fact that many characters are dull and have poor voice actors in this game has been one of my complaints. Fallout New Vegas had the most interesting followers- because they had character. Yes Cicero is annoying as hell, but I can't help but appreciate that he actually has character. He's interesting. I couldn't bring myself to kill the only interesting character I've encountered so far.

I love Cicero's voice acting. Most of the time he has that high, annoying voice, but sometimes he suddenly goes very low and then he sounds incredibly creepy.

Pace yourself, you'll do yourself a mischeif.

I've been taking a break from Skyrim since completing Dawnguard and moved on to playing the new Ghost Recon. I'm having withdrawal symptoms and GR is starting to do my ****** in. Skyrim seems to have left me unable to play other games for very long.

I finished up Blindsighted last night, which was worthy of an achievement in itself. Maker preserve us, that's a tough dungeon for a mage, even with Karliah and Brynjolf tagging along. I was happy that they didn't turn around and walk out, like they did in one of my other playthroughs. Instead, neither Falmer eye registered as a larceny target. I remember people talking about that some time ago, but it hadn't happened to me. Well, how it has. Hmmpf.

I tried just sticking one of the eyes on the shelf, but that didn't go well. The whole time I was trying to lug this monstrosity up (which, of course, floated several feet in front of my character), then place it on a shelf, someone kept bumping into my character, causing her to drop it. I eventually gave up. Why, oh why, can't you activate regular shelves, and put things on them?

Lastly, I conquered Hag's End. That place is the bane of my existence, and I kicked its butt. Woo!

Hehehe.
So here went my friend trying to make a Geralt expy in Skyrim.
Mostly a monster hunter, in leather armor, with skills in two handed etc.
Shame that leather armor is crap.
However he has the PC version so he is looking for a mod.

Still no Dawnguard announcement.

I got that mod, as well. Love it.  You still can't use regular shelves, though- just bookshelves.

It wouldn't be an ES game without hours of frustration trying to place things properly only to have them fly off into a corner.  Image IPB

I didn't realise the Falmer eye thing was a bug. It happened to me, I think I still have one.

There's no point putting things on tables or shelves anyway. I've done it several times with bugs in jars in Breezehome only to come back later and they are allover the floor.

Or constantly knocking stuff you put on your desk in the Thieves Guild.
After about the 30th time I found my statue of the Grey Fox knocked off....

Lets just say that having a quick save feature is a good stress relief.

Well, you're supposed to be able to sell one of the Falmer eyes to Delvin as a larceny target, (which will put it in the bookshelves behind Mercer's old desk, along with all the other larceny targets and job trophies). The other one you can sell, or stuff in a chest. That stupid Falmer eye target has worked for me every single time I've done the quest, but oh no, not this time.

While I was messing around with brute force shoving the thing into the bookshelves, the model ship fell down. Waa.

If you still have one that´s okay. I think it´s the left eye you can give to Delvin.

Hey, have you guys used Icy Spear (Expert level Destruction)?

I just got it last night after killing the dragon at Autumnwatch Tower, but haven't gotten the Expert level perk yet to use it more efficiently. I'm so close!

The thing I'm looking forward to the most, though, is having a thrall! Dang, even with Soul Trap and summoned Atronachs, it takes a long time to get Conjuration leveled up.

Are you using bound weapons? That levels Conjuration quickly. Unfortunately it also levels whatever warrior skill it uses, which isn't very useful unless you use them consistently.

No, I'm not using Bound weapons with any consistency. I did try the Bound Bow, but it was just too pretty for me to use it.

I'm like Gollum with his precious, when there's something pretty to look at. I just end up getting my ass handed to me because I'm staring at it, mesmerized.

It's a good call, though. I'll give it another try.

All the magic skills (except enchantment) level very slowly once you get to about 60. You might have to visit Fallion in Morthal if you get impatient and want youf moaning zombies following you around!

In my experience, Illusion gets more for the investment than the other four Spell Schools, and Destruction and Restoration
require more practice.

Alteration(I think) can be leveled fairly quickly by standing in a town or anywhere with alot of people repeatedly casting detect life.

I'm just waiting for Destruction to come to a screeching halt, or slow down leveling. I use it pretty frequently, and I have it right around 75. I thought Destruction was going to be the difficult one to level, but that's really not the case so far for me.

Restoration takes a loooong time. Mine is only at 40, and Conjuration is not much better, despite using both frequently.

I haven't even bothered with Illusion in this playthrough. it's like I totally forgot about it. I also stopped using Alteration when I switched to light enchanted armor over mage robes. My girl was just too squishy.

If you're not averse to level grinding, the big challenge with Restoration is getting to 75. From then on, you can cast Circle of Protection (an anti-undead spell), which is very spammable outside of combat.

What level is your Kajiit? It's funny how much different play styles matter in skill leveling. Without training, I couldn't get to 75 destruction until level 35 or so.

Conjuration was always the highest of my mage's skills...and I dont really use bound weapons much.

For Restoration, if you haven't already, go speak to Alessandra at Riften's Hall of the Dead. She'll give you 4 or 5 high level Restoration spell books as a reward for completing her quest, which should help you level up more quickly.

The repel undead spell in particular is pretty good if you can find a few skeletons to play around with.

My Khajiit is level 32. Her highest skills right now are Destruction and Lockpicking, which are both in the 70s. Such a bad, destructive kitty. Image IPB

@Wicked - she gives you another quest, after returning her father's blade? All she gave me was cash when I did that one.
