I notice that Faralda now has all of the Expert Destruction spells available for me. I bought Incinerate from her, but crikey, it costs a lot to cast. I need to figure out a better way to reduce spellcasting costs.
It's getting to the point that I'm worried about actually casting some of these spells, for fear of torching my follower by friendly fire. Being a mage can be a lonely road.

I was testing out those scrolls from J'Skarr and ended up torching Lydia.
She deserved it though. I mean, a vortex of fire surrounding your mage buddy is clearly an indication not to get too close.

I might try telling Kharjo to wait somewhere far away, while in a Nordic ruin, or something, then try the cloaks.

So does the latest beta patch do anything in the way of fixing voice related bugs? For some reason I'm not hearing certain named dragons talk. Like the one you first face outside of Whiterun.
From the posts I've read on the Beth forums, it seems it is fixed. I'm about to run a clean install and test the patch myself.

It's terribly easy to get Khajiit names confused. There is also a Dwemer ruin in Skyrim that has two Khajiit brothers, named J'darr and J'zhar (Alftand).
If you have any interest in the meanings behind Khajiit names, this is kind of cool. I like to try to conform to racial naming standards for each character I create. I didn't in the beginning so much, but now I just think it's soo cool.

What age do most people make their PCs?
My main is about 45 years old since I RP he fought in the Great War, while my youngest is my Breton at 18.
I picture my Dunmer protagonists having lived at least a century - an effective assassin who has honed his trade, and dabbled in other areas, and a Tribunal mage who has mastered the schools of magic through fierce determination. The advantage of being Dunmer.

In truth, I just seem to have a thing for Breton girls in general, and also "crazy" girls - I count Muiri, Ingun-Black-Briar, Serana, and Astrid among my favorite ladies of Skyrim along with Eola, and all of them are nuttier than a squirrel.
How is Serana 'crazy' like them? I'm curious. What little I heard made her seem to be a victim.

For instance, in my playthrough, she kept sitting in Ulfric's chair during Season Unending. Kinda funny, I thought.

Sounds amusing. I heard there was a petition to get to have Seranna accept a marriage proposal; does that mean she a really good companion?
I don't think I mentioned this, but I remembered what you said about Cicero a few months back, and I spared him during my new assassin run. I think it was a good move. He has some pretty neat dialogue.

One other thing I forgot to mention about Serana - she wanders a lot. I like to think it's because she has a mind of her own. If you tell her to wait somewhere, expect her to be somewhere else entirely. She won't leave the area or anything, but she will go stand where she wants.
She'll even start to pace/wander while you're in caves or wherever, if she feels you're taking too long.
Oh, hooray! I'm so glad to hear that! I think Cicero is awesome. After reading his journals, going through the main quest, and using him as a follower, you have a much better understanding of what he's been through. I know the game railroads you into thinking you have to kill him, but it's nice to buck the system, and make your own choice every now and then.

Sorta like my Dragonborn tbh - both of them are children of the night (in their owns ways) with highly flexible morals and a penchant for hunting people down and chowing down on them like Salisbury steak. They get along swimmingly.

Yeah, that's him! The poor dude that was the only survivor of the Bruma incident and then he just disappears. I like to assume that he managed to perfect that invisbility potion more than he had intended, lol.happy_daiz wrote...
I remember J'Skar! He was a Khajiit mage in Oblivion (the one who was hiding/invisible, that you had to find).

And thanks for the link. That is pretty interesting. I know that I'll be taking that into mind when making a new Khajit. Sometimes you really just don't realise just how detailed the world of the ES is.
And that link really reminds me how cool it would be to see some of the other Khajit species in action.

Sometimes I also use Tamriel Rebuilt's name generator, for a push in the right direction, but it's not really as random as I would like.
@green - aww, they're like two peas in a pod! That's so sweet!

With Nords, Imperials, and Bretons, it's simpler because their names are all based on Scandinavian, Latin, and French names respectively (in Skyrim Imperials and Bretons now also take on Italian and Celtic names), so often you can just sort through a list of corresponding baby names and pick out the ones you like best.

Being a mage isn't lonely with Dremora Lords keeping you company.
I almost forgot about that guy. I wonder what happened to J'Skar. Maybe he went to the College to avoid the King of Worms in Cyrodiil (one of them from the Warp of the West, anyway).
A nice vampire, greengoron? Sounds like a nice change of pace from the typical vampires we deal with. Do we shape the relationship with her, i.e. becoming friends v. reluctant allies, or is it different than that? Is there a reaction to meeting her (and the others) as a Volkihar vampire?

Strangely enough, all of the vampires are "nice" in Castle Volkihar, especially if you join their clan. Even Harkon is very polite - first time I encountered him, I was very surprised by his good manners. Of course, their politeness only extends so far - the Volkihar Court is like the Orzammar Assembly, complete with the same shark smiles, rivalries, and political backstabbery.
Harkon though is absolutely ruthless, and both his wife and Serana have long been the victims of his cruelty, so you heard right that Serana is a victim.
And yes, you do sorta shape your relationship with Serana - you can be friendly and comforting, or you can be cold and distant (and she will respond accordingly). You can also flirt with her and she seems receptive, but she still won't marry you.
Also, I do not know how Serana or the Volkihar respond if you first encounter them already a vampire - I know Serana doesn't acknowledge you being a werewolf, but Harkon does (and he is less than pleased by it).

I was pleased that there were some new voice actors used for Dawnguard. Some of the new minor npcs do have the same old, same old, but the new main ones are great. One of my favorites is Fura Bloodmouth of Castle Volkihar. I don't know what it is, but I really like her. And she's probably not technically all that important, but she is a quest-giver.
In regard to Serana, I'm always super nice to her, and she seems to appreciate that someone cares.

@daiz - I don't know if it happens with female Dragonborns, but with me she gets kinda sappy with mine sometimes. It's quite cute.

So far, she's Arch Mage and is about two seconds from being Guildmaster. I just need to trigger the last special quest in Markarth. I could swear I've done more quests there than I need to, but I'm crossing my fingers this isn't yet another bug Dawnguard caused for my Thieves Guild adventures.
Serana - sappy?

I took offense to that a bit, actually - I'd love to have responded "My blood is not filth! It is a gift from Lord Hircine!" XD
Still he was overall far more polite than I expected - his character reminded me of Gary Oldman in Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, as does Castle Volkihar in general.

Not that I still didn't hear about it from them when they picked up friendly fire.
@LobselVith: I love my dremora summons, too.
My battlemage, her Dunmer follower and dremora summon- I bet they are a hit at all the Stormcloak parties.

I don't think the game railroads you into that decision, but maybe it's because I never intended to kill him. He's just too damned funny, and I respect the old ways of the Dark Brotherhood from playing Oblivion, so yeah.happy_daiz wrote...
