You know I keep looking at the shouts and feel they needed to be different.
Like the damage ones should have been top tier destruction level stuff.
Also with a shorter cool down.
Like it should have been possible to just play around with shouts basically.
I mean you can use combat, stealth, and magic why not have SHOUTS as another school
From what I gather lore wise. Schools of combat, stealth, magic, speech and crafting have been around for hundreds of years.
Dragon Shouts haven't been around very long.
So it is my guess that there are no current philosophies of teaching ingrained in the culture of Tamriel.
Also Vampirism and Warewolfism have only recently become recognised as schools of combat.
Forgive me if I've misunderstood what these "schools" are.

But there are so many pages that it's really hard to keep track of this thread.
Perhaps it's time The Elderscrolls series got it's own section.
No?

My experimentation with magic in general has been very enlightening - so far, the only schools I find to be truly useful are Illusion and Conjuration. Having some difficulties finding a really useful application for Destruction, Restoration seems absolutely useless, and I still need to experiment with Alteration some more (Transmute Mineral Ore sounds appealing but I need to find it first).

This is pretty much all we're going to get.

Wow, I seriously underestimated the power of Illusion magic - you can seriously f*** people up with a well-placed Fury or Fear spell, and render half of the Sneak perk tree useless by casting Muffle and Invisibility on yourself. Clairvoyance is also a boon for getting to hard-to-reach places in the mountains where there's absolutely no indication of how to get there short of the useless quest marker.

Restoration is a battery that can help power all the other Schools. With Regeneration increasing Magika restoration, Necromage boosting the damage from any spell vs Undead, having Stamina 'heal' along with Health, Magic Resistance aiding defense, and a once/day instant heal of 250 pts all aids the overall magic experience for me.
Destruction is getting another look from me due to a rebalancing mod. Perhaps it boosts it a bit too much (possible +215% beyond vanilla), but it seems to work well with rebanced higher lvl monstaers, too. But basic vanilla is only used for burning webs, Runes, and Cloaks as a rule.
Alteration is one that needs some help, IMO. The armor durations could use some extension; current MMO apllications are simply too much work for me to enjoy them.

Shouts came early in the age, with the dragon wars. No one knows exactly where those fit in the timeline because they've kind of been written in as of Skyrim.Abraham_uk wrote...

Tiber Septim started a college of thu'um in Markarth, but it ended up being a place where nobles would send their sons in order to suck up to the emperor and not to learn anything. So that went by the wayside.
I think they didn't make shouts more powerful so as not to unbalance the game. I mean, I think they are already very powerful. You can't get by just with shouts but they turn the tide of a battle fast.

I'm considering doing a playthrough without Smithing - I grow weary of the constant mining and lugging ore around everywhere, occupying precious inventory space. Might pick up Enchanting as a skill instead, and just max Light Armor perks to make up the difference. Hopefully that will be enough to keep me alive without having to waste time, inventory space, and perks.

Literally.
WHEN ALL YOU HAVE IS FIREBALLS!
I never really put any perks into Illusion.
Why bother with all that fancy trickery when you can just blow the ever loving crap out of someone?

Heh, and I do like the idea of spamming Fireballs - it's a very damaging spell and I don't think many enemies other than Dunmer, Fire Atronachs, and maybe Dragons have innate resistance to fire magic. I'll consider it.

Fireball
Ice Storm
Chain Lightning.
Its kind of odd playing someone who can kill things in oh so many ways who is very polite.
I RP my Altmer as having very good manners, and being a decent person.
Who also can vaporize dragons if he feels like it.

Necromancer with necromage lets me thrall the Volkihar vampires and named bosses (Morvath etc). I can also reanimate the death overlords for 25% longer.
If I take resto, I always do this.

Sneaking helps. I would do the College quest line asap, it has rewards that will make mageing a lot easier.ReconTeam wrote...
I'm so used to my heavy armor wearing fighter I play as, I'm having a hell of a time not dying horribly as a mage. I presume things will improve after a few levels. Right now I just have Lydia serve as a human shield.

I'm beginning to regret not having ever dabbled in magic before this - I could have saved myself from so much pain and got so much more accomplished in past playthroughs if I had just bothered to take a few good spells along with me.
Vampires are also looking much more appealing - I messed around with the Vampire Lord mode recently and found it a lot of fun to play as. The perk tree is also superior to that of Werewolves IMHO. Not to mention the tremendous benefits Necromage apparently adds to being a vampire.

I'll toy around with Restoration a little more, but so far I'm not impressed - the spell selection is limited and with the Master of the Mind perk, all Turn Undead spells are pointless. I might see a use for Wards (especially with the perk where it restores Magicka), particularly against dragons, but I'll have to test them out first.

Besides Circle of Protection, I cannot recall using any Turn Undead spells within Restoration; simply focussed on the excellent healing it offers. I prefer my opponents to remain in the area as a rule.
But do not overlook Revive, as a constant pool of Stamina allows for Power Attacks, sprinting, long zoom times with Archery, etc. It ain't the spells so much, but the perks that boost overall gameplay. I have boosted armor a few points, and frustrated a few foes with a Cloak/ Close Wound combo.
I must say Enchanting is impressive. With the middle row of perks, I am able to tailor my armor as desired for almost any build. But I also keep Smithing to improve and use the minerals I prefer.

Vampire with necromage and master of the mind means that I can fear, frenzy or calm any undead in the game. Also every self target spell I cast gets a 25% bonus since I'm now undead. Respite + mana regen allows me to fight comfortably in daylight

*Dawnguard spoilers ahead*
Once you finish a certain quest during the DG questline and perform a certain action, daylight will no longer be a problem for vampire characters.
(You may have suspected as much just from the DG trailer, but I tagged it as a spoiler regardless)
