Since they didn't release Dawnguard, I'm trying out my first pure mage. NO ARMOR (only robes and clothes), NO SMITHING, and NO SPELL COST REDUCTION ENCHANTS. House rules.
I'm a little worried about the poor Destruction spells, but I know that Conjuration is insane and that Restoration and Illusion are quite good as well, so it should be possible.
Question: Will my illusion spells ever be outleveled, assuming that I get all relevant illusion perks? I'm thinking if I'm 81, will enemies eventually outlevel my spells? I have googled it a few times and found no actual reply, just a bunch of people saying it seems to be going fine for their level 20 characters.
Also, which bear is best?
From what I gather in the vanilla game, most foes stop progression about 30th lvl; so max Illusion should work well. However, I installed a mod to aid higher lvl play, and thus making some encounters more difficult (eg; a Feral Grizzly bear does not care about Kyne's Shout or much else besides dinner).

In my experience, no armor and no Smithing is quite viable, but would hesitate to avoid any spell reductions. I have been taking one for Destruction and another for Restoration. The costs of higher lvl spells are prohibitive, and if you wish to enjoy use of several of them, either mastery and/or reducing costs seems to be the only solutions I see... besides avoiding Master spells which is quite viable.
The problem I encountered in my like playthrough was at mid-30's, MMO like usage of Alteration for encounters was simply not fun for me; more like work. I have seen a mod or two to increase durations, but still require more research.
