^ I could start a list of all the things I missed in my first Dawnguard playthrough. Shellbugs? I never even saw one my first time through. I was lucky to notice the bolt recipes at blacksmith forges, let alone realize there were new categories/things to smith!

Not to mention all the stuff I missed in the Soul Cairn and Vale. /facepalm

I did not miss any quests, but I did not get Auriel's shield for example.

I mean the Vale? Its like half the size of Whiterun hold!

If you go fast through Dawnguard you will miss some pretty amazing stuff.

I mean the scenery in the Vale? Holy ****.
People can say whatever the hell they want but Bethesda does Scenery Porn better than anyone in the biz.

That place was jaw dropping. I could have happily spent another 100 hours exploring it.

Side quests shouldn't be missed, either. The loot you can pick up from them is pretty awesome. If you're on the DG side, the schematics quests are a must-do, imho. Lots of quest-givers on both sides, actually.

I never got Auriel's shield. Hmmpf.

Giggles, I quoted you. Image IPB

I wouldn't install DG with a new character, until some fix for the random attacks comes along. On a save for a new warrior I lost several people in Whiterun. I wouldn't have even know about it if not for the message...Amren, quest failed. After clearing the town, I found death hounds attacking the stable and three more dead bodies, two farmers and the stable master.

^ I think that's pretty normal, and to be expected, considering what's happening in Skyrim. You'd expect to lose some people with a vampire plague happening right outside your door.

I lost a few NPCs in my first run, too, but eventually you figure out how to tweak your playstyle to avoid or lessen it. Or deal with some ghost towns. Image IPB

Level does seem to play a part. In my level 50+ playthrough, city guards were more than capable of protecting NPCs. Vampires really never got through, unless you were in an unwalled area - but then, in any scenario, you almost just have to assume there will be vampires, and to seek them out...well, if it's night, anyway. I've never seen any traipsing around during the day.

If you're good at playing Skyrim, you can take care of the vampires with relative ease and without any casualties - apparently, you're not very good at Skyrim.

If you haven't already, I recommend doing the Aetherium questline from DG (Lost to the Ages).  You get the "Investigate Arkngthamz" quest from reading any of the gazillion "The Aetherium Wars" books sprinkled across Skyrim, and in Fort Dawnguard. It's a nice change of pace.

I haven't gotten very far, Serana and I are on the road to find the Moth Priest.

We fast traveled into a Stormcloak camp, and that triggered a vamp attack which killed one of the SC soldiers.  Next thing I know Serana raised him as a thrall.  lol  Too bad she made me send Aranea away, the Halloween freak show with all our summons isn't as entertaining as it used to be.

I might try Rage at some point but right now I think I have enough to fill the 2 months til Dishonored comes out.  I have to play a Malkavian in VtMB.

^Oh man, so you haven't even been to the Soul Cairn yet. You'll have to tell us what you think of that place - I thought it was epic (and depressing at the same time). The place you go to reach the portal to Soul Cairn is also quite something.

It is a bug. Has nothing to do with whether you know hot to play, and there is nothing you can do about it when you're not even in the area. Not that a new character in starting gear with zero resistance has much chance against master vampires and mage thralls.

Yeah; lots of stuff to in in DG, and will have to make another special PC just with vampire hunting in mind. The current one is following the main storyline, but may be too high lvl to gather the side quests.

I am trying to generate a bit of a visual flowchart as to where to place this series; will likely go after the Main Quest, Civil War, and most faction quests, but really needs to be followed with something in order to play with the new shinies a little more. Besides frying the Thalmor, any helpful suggestions?

Oh sweet Talos.

I just love playing with my new werewolf perks!
One of the new kill cams is awesome!

You snag someone by the head, then just THROW them across the room.

Having lots of fun hacking up vampires everywhere.

I've adapted to the vampire attacks, but they are a sneaky bunch and they seem to keep throwing new things at me. Today (and I do mean during the day in-game) we saw a vampire Traveller walking through Falkreath, who promptly yelled "Die Dawnguard!" when approached and attacked. A stupid guard got in the way of my power attack though and I had to contend with the vampire strafing and draining while about five guards made me their top priority rather than the bloody vampire hurling lightning and casting blood magic. I'm pickpocketing that 40 gold back off the stupid gits.

Generally I now find it advantageous to fast travel to civil war camps or other landmarks near the unwalled towns and villages, then head to the town after the attack has been dealt with. Obviously less easy if you've chosen a side in the civil war, but at least the soldiers respawn. I made the mistake of fast travelling to Dragonbridge for the quest to find the Moth Priest, and lost about five different NPCs because:

A: It was the middle of the day so I didn't expect an attack
B: the bastard vampires didn't spawn until I'd been there several minutes and I was in the middle of a conversation with the woman who owns the mill with the drunk husband. Cheaters.

Well, live and learn. Apart from Azzard Lynvieve (sp?), he's a pile of ash.

Been wandering a lot with Serana and it's a lot of fun, especially when she raises the vampire's own thralls to fight them. I also like that she kind of sandboxes a bit when you're not doing much, especially cool when I'm using the blacksmith forge at Warmaidens and she's in the background using the grindstone.

"No, you can't eat him."

While on the way back from picking up one of the Dwarven diagrams I ran into the old orc looking for a good death random encounter. I always liked that one, and this time I decided to honour the old orc with a screenshot.

Rest well noble warrior, with sword to hand and dead enemies around you.

So far I'm at the point of the main Dawnguard quest when I have to talk to the Moth Priest, but I'm holding off to do some of the other quests. I've recruited the crazy Arkay priest, picked up a relic at Haemar's Shame (while doing a Daedra's best friend), gotten several of the Dwarven blueprints and even killed a vampire infiltrator to a Jarl's court, lots of fun.

"I'm the Thief-Queen of the Rift and I just saved your rump from a vampire infiltrator, problem Laila?"

The game should not randomly sabotage your quests. I'm sorry to say it, but it's very poor design.

However, I save often and so far I have only lost NPCs to vampires once, and that's only because I thought it was the usual thief attack in Riften and thought I could let it play out and loot the thief. By the time I realized it was a vampire, I did not have time to reach it and kill it before two NPCs were face down in the street.

For me, the problem is minimal, and the advantages just from the new crafting in Dawnguard far outweigh the negatives. As a matter of fact, I got sick of my "evil" character and started a new one with Dawnguard installed. Hasn't been a problem so far.

Some nice pics BigEvil.

I just got my werewolf perk tree maxed...holy crap is that a lot of things to ate.
I ate mammoths, giants, bandits, cows, some wolves, some more bandits, a few deer, and even a mudcrab.
Horrible creature....

Seriously though I did enjoy pimp slapping a vampire into the air.

Say... is the werewolf form + tree any good these days?

I made my last character a vampire but was disappointed.

Yes.

You get more powerful, can feed on animals, your three powers (IF you did the Totem Quests) get a boost, and you get a bit tougher.

However the form sucks against undead or dwemer machines.
Still fun as hell to have as a backup.

Werewolf form is like berserker rage, except not as good. I use it as an emergency button or when i'm bored, but werewolves kind of blow in Skyrim. Their defense seems to suck and they don't regenerate. And of course you can't interact with anything so after going bonkers all you can do is wait...wait...wait.

I didn't care much for vampires either, because they seem too human. I never heard of undead having to breath before, but they do in Skyrim.

You know, for a game that sucks so much, you sure do play it a lot. Amusing.

Of course, given your failure to contain the vampire threat, perhaps the game doesn't really suck - you just suck at the game.

And you like covering Bethesda's ass with moronic comments.

I don't "cover" anyone's ass - the game is flawed as hell and full to the brim with annoying bugs. I just don't make a habit of bellyaching about it like an infant every chance I get (yet continuing to play the game for some reason - I find that part particularly hilarious).

I'm not the one with my knickers in a wad every time a bug is pointed out. You're acting like you're on Bethesda's payroll...and making juvenile comments on top of that.
