I try to follow a reasonable story based path at this point.

What story? ME2 is a recruitment story, Shep needs to get a team to fight the Collectors, thats it. I don't see why recruitment order influences 'story'.
IMHO the only real decision is whether you go straight for the Omega Relay to save Normandy's crew or not.

I don't think recruitment influences story per say (it is up to the individual) but I guess I try to follow something that seems reasonable to me.  So, I generally go to one system and do as much recruitment/loyalty to minimize travel time.

Wait
the gibbed editor can handle paragon/renegade points?  Damn I need to
look more closely at that thing, I just used it to avoid planet
scannning.

Yes, you can add as many points as you wish.

Awesome.  I must have had an old version or I screwed something up, because the lower tabs were not in what I had so I only eddeited from the raw tab and paragon/renegade points were not there.  I just redownloaded and now I maxed out both or 1,000 points in each and they look maxed.  It will be nice to play the game not worrying whether or not I have enough X points so I don't ****** off miranda or legion or whatever.

Ah, so that's your story :P Yeah, I that's what I do usually. Unfortunately you have to revist most places again later (Omega - Samara LM; Illium lots of stuff; Citadel (Thane & Garrus LM)) and to keep this on topic - some upgrades only become available in stores past-Horizon/DCS.

The Collector part is what I consider the 'story' or at least the main objective/mission. Everything else is about team-building. I believe it's up to the player to make up his/her own story how best to handle squadmates. :P

After thinking about it, what about adding the following option to sum up my post?

"Weapon and power upgrades are good, but the best upgrades are levels."

And/or:

"I only start gathering upgrades if I'm sucking too much."

Or maybe even:

"Sometimes I go for specific upgrades, but usually I just do next closest mission."

The last one might be the best for me.

Just spit balling here.

EDIT: Edited for forum formatting.

I think if I reworded the 3rd option, it could include this possibility - go for certain upgrades you want, when you want/need them. Aside from that it doesn't matter.
I'd have to restart the poll to include this, but to be honest due to the nature of the question I don't think its worth it - the discussion in this thread is more than good enough.

That seems reasonable. After all, I picked the third option, since it was the closest to my own progression style. I have to say, this thread is a pretty interesting read.

I love snipers and warp bombs, so I usually blow through the initial recruitment missions and Horizon to recruit Thane quickly since he can give me both in one package. After that I tend to choose missions based on how much I hate doing them, saving the best for last-- like dessert.

I don't mind an extra challenge so I don't worry too much about getting the best build as early as possible. That said, I do prioritize the upgrades I buy based on Shepard's class.

3.

I'll do Firewalker early if I use biotics - plus it's easy cash and you can get a medigel along the way if you need it. Kasumi's LM always comes early, the Locust is just too good.

I try to frontload as much before Horizon as possible. Post-Horizon, I get Thane first because of the Viper, since I almost always pick up the sniper rifle specialization, and he's most likely to come to the DCS.

Since I recruit Kasumi and Zaeed, my push to DCS comes a bit earlier, so I postpone Tali and do some loyalty missions (Grunt, Miranda) and LotSB if I feel like it, along with the geth planet that gives the damage upgrade.

After DCS, it's loyalty missions and any other assignments that give upgrades, Tali, her LM, and on to the endgame...

I tend to run heavily modded characters who use a variety of weapons and powers, so most upgrades are just as welcome as any other, with the sole exception of heavy pistols (which I functionally replace with my Mattock on practically every class I play).

Generally speaking, the environments in the missions end up being the deciding factor - I try to vary them so I have a a mixture of urban, desert, jungle and industrial environments rather than do all of any one type at once. For instance, I rarely, if ever, do Garrus's mission straight after Miranda's or Jack's mission straight after Zaeed's.

Yea when I role Infiltrator I will get the Sniper Damage upgrades ASAP.

and cool down bonuses ASAP in general, Although speaking generally the game is not really that difficult where a defined path is a neccessity

Actually there are a couple of missions I don't do in order of upgrades I want to acquire. Thane and Samara's loyalty missions I do the instant they pop up since they are both essentially just free level ups (no combat associated with either mission) so there's no real reason to put them off.

Otherwise I tend to try and get my primary weapon and secondary weapons to at least 3/5, hard shields, midgel shield recovery, cain, and primary power CD reduction upgrades before the collector ship.
