I remember hearing that Bioware wanted to use some of the ideas that went into ME1 originally for a new KOTOR game (presumably KOTOR2) but LucasArts didn't approve it. Instead, Bioware chose to make their own scifi IP.

I don't know how much truth or accuracy there is to that, I remember reading it a while ago.

I look at it as a combination of Star Wars and Star Trek.

Mass Effect is made by every possible Sci-Fi and RPG cliche and made something very original.

What did Spoony said for that?

I've never seen the Star Trek TV series but I saw some of the movies and there were some similarities. This is a no spoiler forum so I'll just warn you all MINOR ME2 AND STAR TREK SPOILERS. Highlight to reveal:  Spock and Shepard both dying and bein resurrected. The Borg in First Contact reminded me a little of the geth but also of indoctrination.

There's also some 2001: a Space Odyssey in there. The fear of artificial intelligence and the EDI - HAL connection. Joker even refers to the song HAL sings in 2001.

The music was inspired by Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack.

Since 2001 Space oddesey and Star wars were inspired by the movies made by Pavel Klushantsev

I think that the movies Road to the Stars” and 1962’s “Planet of Storms inspired mass effect.

Also a kotor that was more like mass effect in terms of gameplay would be awesome.

Haven't read the thread yet but I'm just gonna make a list of basic well known sci-fi media:

Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Bladerunner, Fifth Element, Battlestar Galactica, Halo...etc. etc. etc.

I can tell through a lot of the dialogue that the Bioware team are total sci-fi geeks.

It reminds me of an IGN interview of blizzard talking about the original Starcraft development - at least from what I remember, they were given the opportunity to do some licensed properties with star wars, but decided to try their own material instead. They'd managed well with warcraft at that point, so why not? The industry may have been a very different place had that been changed...

I'm glad bioware has been crafting their own IPs, from Jade Empire to whatever comes in the future. Oh yeah, what inspired mass effect... perhaps someone was "experimenting" and saw a giant robot lobster in the sky? :-)

Oh yeah, some people think it's better than ME2.

Not me personally, but some do. They are pretty different games honestly.

So many different things, TVTropes had to break it down into alphabetically organized chunks:

http://tvtropes.org/...Main/MassEffect

And I'm sure they're still missing a bunch of things too.

Leviathan of Dis.  Also: bald blue chicks.  'Course they're not plants.  Also, the Kestrel helm makes Shep look like a Tavlek.

The incident with Shepard and the Prothean Beacon reminds me so much of John Criton who had Wormhole technology inserted into his brain.

There's way more than just Blade Runner in there.  Blade Runner didn't even have a single scene in space, much less Space Marines and humanoid aliens, and the Reapers owe far more to Cthulu than they do to the Replicants.  ME isn't very "film noir" either, barring brief bits here and there (mostly in ME2) which Blade Runner was in spades.

I don't want to spoil anything but I think people will find some very interesting stuff if they follow those links ;) Follow them at your own risk as I believe they are the inspiration of the Mass Effect storyline.

everything is inspired by everything, and the ME universe is no different. i am a huge sci-fi fan, from asimov to vonnegut, from twilight zone to original trek, i love them all. mass effect has been the first sci-fi series created in the past 30 years that actually interested me.

yeah definitly Babylon 5, I loved it and bought all seasons on DvD. There are a few similiarities between the ME universe and the Babylon 5 universe. Not like its copied, but definitly inspired, which is a good thing!Image IPB

Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos. The technocore, the reaper programs, the hegemony's dependance on the technocore's farcaster network, etc., etc...  Some striking similarities there.

I love Mass Effect, maybe even obsessed with it, but the Hyperion novels are what space opera's really about :)

Surprised no one else has mentioned it to be honest.
