I've always heard great things about the mass effect series, however, Issues that many of my friends have had with the SecuROM DRM software have made me wary and kept me from buying the games.

I noticed on a wikipedia article that "More recent versions of Mass Effect on budget prices (those available on EA classics) have SecuROM omitted."  And I was wondering if this included the download available on EA's online store.

Thanks

use steam
i've never heard anyproblems with the steam version and quite a few friends of mine own it

You just have to download steam and after that all the games you get from it are yours forever. Good Community in general and they have a much wider selection of games than the EA store does too.

not sure if the steam version contains securom

also both titels ME 1 and ME 2 cost 19.99 on steam

and as i've said my friends who own the game have never had a problem running it

I've used steam before, and don't really like the idea of having to run a separate client just to play a game I've purchased.

At any rate, the question still stands, does the EA download include Securom?

I know the Steam version has SecuROM removed, so I'd recommend that for ME1. That said, I have no reason to think the wiki article is wrong about more recent hard copies having it removed as well. I don't know about the EA Store version.

Note that there is only one version of the Bring Down the Sky DLC, that you can get for free by registering ME1 on Bioware's old forums, and it comes with SecuROM. Worse SecuROM, too: EA's deauthorization tool, which lets you get authorizations back if your OS and game install are intact, works with ME1, but not with the ME1 DLCs, so we may all have to e-mail EA tech support some day asking for more BDTS activations.

BTW, I can't let the EA Store pass without comment: last I heard, they charge extra for the ability to re-download from them after a certain period of time (1 year or maybe even less, IIRC), and I'm not sure even the extra-length download rights are forever. Considering perpetual re-download, as many times as you want, comes free of charge from proper services like Steam, Impulse, etc., I honestly don't know why anyone would buy PC games from the EA Store.

i've heard that the EA store will make you rebuy the game if you haven't played it in a year as well >> all in all steam is good.

SecuROM was packagaed with the original release but after numerous complaints was removed in the repackaged "EA classics" version you still register the game but theres no limits to how many times, I'd imagine the Steam version does not have it either as it caused so much uproar.Besides steam has it's own DRM
