In the release notes for ATI's 10.12 (December) driver update, I found this interesting sentence:

"Dragon Age Origins no longer hangs intermittently during gameplay."

So, for those of you that are having problems with Dragon Age and are using an ATI video card, give the latest drivers a try and see if anything improves.  You can download them here.

(If this update does indeed solve major problems, and since it is a kind of an official update, it may be a good idea to pin this thread for future reference.)

So this stops that annoying screech/frozen screen issue?

Because by god was that annoying. I had to do a hard reset everytime that happened.

Hm...seems to work fine for me other than screenshots causing a minifrozen screen for 3 secs.

Hmm...my Radeon 5500 HD works fine with the game, never had any issues so far o__O So should I install the new my driver nonetheless? I'm a bit cautious in that, tbh.

The latest drivers are recommended for relatively new video cards like the HD 5500, regardess of if it will help. If you're uncertain, create a System Restore point before downloading it.

While it's always good to be using the latest drivers for all your hardware, my rule was always been, "if things are working fine, leave it like that".

It's not uncommon for a new an improved driver to cause issues. So like I said, if things are working just fine, better to leave it like that. The last time I upgraded my video card drivers was in march.
