I finally got my new pc after 6 months of waiting. It's an Alienware so it should run Mass Effect 1 with no problems, however after I installed it everytime I try running the game The ME configuration utility pops up followed by a window that says the config utility stopped working. "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." What hell is going on? If it helps any I purchased an EA Values version of the game for PC. Any help would be really appreciated been waiting about a year to play this.....

Okay, thanks. Not always vital, but good to know. (I don't know if you've visited this forum before, but the following occurs fairly often: "My computer is good enough to run it, why it crashing?" "Well, could you post your specs anyway?" "Sure. Let's see, I have an Intel Graphics Accelerator...")
Anyhow. Since it's the configuration utility that's crashing, my first question is whether it's patched to 1.02; I recall the config utility has a tendency to crash on newer systems under older patches. If it's a value-buy-whatchamacallit version, I would imagine so, but you should make sure before trying anything more involved.
This might not be the easiest thing to check given you can't get in to the game, but look in the \\docs\\ subfolder of wherever you installed Mass Effect to. In my Steam install, there's a file called "MassEffect_102_en.txt." (Also a "101" file.) If that's not there, get & install the 1.02 patch.
If it's already patched/patch doesn't work, my next piece of advice would be the ever-helpful-and-surprising "make sure your drivers are up to date." After that, I'm afraid I'm out of solutions that are obvious, likely, or easy.

Installed patches. The config utility is good now but when I press play on the launcher I'm getting nothing.

Win7 64 bit is the problem. Plenty of other people have had similar problems when it comes to installing, or playing ME1 under the 64 bit versions of Win7 or Vista.
ME was written long before 64 bit Windows came about, so there will compatability issues. Its like trying to play Doom under XP.
Create a seperate partition and dual boot with WinXP is the best option.

That's very odd because I have it work perfectly on an Windows 7 64bit laptop, It takes a minute to boot (which is irritating) but after that it's smooth as butter.
That said I always directly click the exe.

A minute as in how long? I installed and unitstalled twice. I was waiting a good 10 mins for the game to pop up, got nada.

A minute as in 2 minutes exactly.
It's odd that you're waiting 10 minutes.:/
Have you tried ignoring the launcher and going straight to the exe? I tend to have problems when using game launchers but not the actual .exe

I'm really heated right now. I dropped a 20 on this and I really don't want to roll a default sheploo

Have you tried just the .exe yet?

It's in your installation folder. Under the main ME folder there should be a folder called Binaries. Inside that is the .exe
Make a shortcut and then launch it.

Thanks Ryzakis, got it working... on the 3rd install oddly enough. I tried the exe the first time with no results (mine diesn't have .exe at the end) but not it's smooth sailing clear as mudd and all that.

That's great. Remember always use the shortcut for the .exe
For some reason launchers give me trouble I'm not sure why if it's my comp or a 64-bit thing but I learned early on to avoid launchers like the plague.

hey ryzaki i have the same prob.
i dont see any .exe when i get to binaries... there's just "MassEffect" without the ".exe"? what do you think?
and for nale' it seems we had the same problem, how did you find the .exe? did you reinstall the game and it abruptly became with .exe?
thanks

The default for Windows omits filename extensions, but you can fix that in the Control Panel. You'll need to do that first.

You can also look at the Type column in Windows Explorer. .exes, among others, will be listed as Application.
Turning on the actual extensions is always good, though. I never could understand what the point of omitting them was.

Me, neither. But the last person had a second thread, his own, and when I described right-clicking on Exe Files to set the Icon as Run as Administrator, he found it and got it going, so obviously he'd turned the extensions to "on" by then.
