I'm curious as to why this is. (if it is indeed the case and I'm not imagining things)
Not trying to be rude or anyhting, just curious.

Same reasons guys play games. For fun, enjoyment, living out fantasy, competitive drive, you name it.

Personal inter-relationships, intrigue, violence, romance, politics, betrayal, loyalty......it covers all of that and then some more. It's epic.
And then of course, there's Alistair and Anders

Protip: There are a lot of girls playing things like MMOs, too. But the whole social dynamic can drastically change there when people discover you're female; so more girls hide the fact.
Gender is a very annoying factor and can define how people treat you especially online. Personally i don't care if people think of me as a boy or a girl online it's what's inside that should count and what should make people like me.
Any female knows the horror of people finding out you are female while playing a game online and then you get lots of creepy guys all like "ASL? GT MSN BBE?"

I know I've been playing video games for nearly 20 years, and the main reason is they are escapist fun. They take us to worlds and let us experience stories in a unique way that you don't get from books or movies, for rpgs anyway. But I play games like Plants vs Zombies, Limbo, Defense Grid, Dead Space etc too.
This will save you alot of time and trouble in life - girls are just like guys, but with different plumbing.

Yeah, but playing on an FFA PvP server, I found there were worse things (those guys you can just /ignore). On an FFA server, when people found out I was female (I spoke up in vent on a PUG raid, or something) one of three things usually happened:
A) They decided their next goal in life was to gank me non-stop. While in an of itself that doesn't bother me, if I am trying to go heal for a group that's waiting on me, that's problematic. (And while my PoM in AoC was pretty strong against some classes, others...not so much.) So, unfun in general.
C) They decide they need to give me things (which I refuse), or treat me with kid gloves (if I'm effing up in a dungeon, just tell me, damnit). Not so much unfun as just...awkward.

C would be my personal pet hate when they try to give you stuff or offer "help" No i do not need your help i'll learn on my own time how to play the darn game, though the latter only applies when you are a newbie and they feel their awesome game knowledge will make you fall in love with them or something
when i played WoW i saw this behaviour alot. it doesnt happen so much at the lower level areas, but getting towards the mid-twenties and above, males seemed to think the females needed all the help they could get...which was completely untrue of course, as it was me, being a solo hunter surrounded by mobs, who needed all the help i could get lol
most of the time it was female gamers who would offer help in situations where i was having trouble, the "pro" male gamers largely ignored my" level 25 noob character" (actual insult i received)

Ladies, wasn't the OP asking specifically about why we play DA:O and not why females play video games in general?
Well, yes. But the point I was trying to make is a lot of girls play a lot of video games. We play DA:O for the same reasons we play all those other games, lol.

This question is born out of an observation of the DA community. It seems there are very high number of females who play Dragon Age origins, higher than most games in fact.

We don't have facts to say this. Do we?

Or maybe it's because DA:O has strong female characters who are not soley portrayed as sex objects.
I thought it was great that we got a background to choose from and we can form our character's personality from the beginning as opposed to being given a premade character and then shoved off into the world without the option of making our own choices.
I'm not going to lie, I liked the romance options. Not alot of games have this. It's not the most important part of DA:O, but it helped me to give more depth to my character(s).
Of course another reason is the story is awesome.
I can't speak for everyone, but those are the reasons why I like it.

Maybe the amount of feedback from us female players is due to the fact that these forums are more polite and intellectual, and that it may be the reason why it seems that alot of girls play DA:O?
as an active member of the bungie forums i can see why this would be an prevalent opinion...
some threads on the halo: reach forum are, well, they're lacking in intelligence...
