Why do a lot of girls play Dragon Age?

I want to know what is it about DA:O that attracts women more than, say, Mass Effect?

I think it has to do with how personal these games are. The character you create is a reflection of yourself, and the people you interact with have enough depth to almost be real people.
Also, killing things is fun.

I don't get it either. There are a lot of females here, and that conflicts with the scientifically proven rule that there are no women on the internet. I think I will chalk it up to a most massive and dangerous conspiracy.
Yes that is exactly right. This could never be. It certainly is not just genuine curiosity at a conciedence I find interesting. Perish the thought.

Ok, I'm not asking why girls play video games, I know they do. It seems to me however that almost more girls than guys play DA:O. (Judging by the amount of fanart for fem wardens, fanfics, users here and that the most popular romance option is for females).

Hmmm...I can't really speak to that since I love pretty much all RPGs. Good question, now you have me curious as well!

Hm...DAO has Alistair. I think that's explanation enough.
Kidding aside *wonders if she was kidding* anyways. It's because I get to play myself as a strong female champion without silly restictions or rules or being forced into bikini armor or having to watch my female compaions in such.
Alas .DA2.

I don't actually know if what I said is 100% true because I haven't been on alot of other gaming forums but from what I have seen, this is one of the better forums IMO.Line of Ink wrote...

some threads on the halo: reach forum are, well, they're lacking in intelligence...
To reiterate;
There are probably more female gamers than everyone thinks. Some of us might not have access to the forums or just don't bother to post, which could be said for males too. That's a personal choice. What I meant was the amount of feedback from us female players on these forums might seem like alot and therefore give the impression that "alot of girls play DA:O", when actually, it might be balanced with guys and girls or differ.
People go where they feel wanted or where their opinion matters. And I'm sure they don't feel like posting in threads on sites where people go back and forth calling each other every expletive they can come up with and NOT discuss things on topic in a civilized and adult manner (although humor is important too,of course).

If that is true then what is it about DA then that inspires females to be such a vocal aprt of the community?

trust me on this, ive been on the bungie forums for a number of years, ive visited the call of duty forums (all games) and a couple of other online games and they are all pretty much the same...im not saying that all people on these forums are like raving lunatics, or that all people who play these games are abusive towards other players, its just they are the most vocal, unfortunately.
its the same on the actual games themselves...i get the feeling that i play against alot more female gamers on halo than i realise but they hide the fact they are female because of the abuse they fear they will get....
yeah, it probably seems like there are a load of female gamers on these forums because they actaully feel comfortable enough to admit it....

Alas .DA2.I have a feeling between the voiced PC and fixed oufits I'm not going to enjoy it anywhere near as much as I did DAO.
Whoa, are you in my brain? I was actually thinking of writing the exact same Alistair thing. And I could not agree more about DA2. I can't stand having a PC forced on me. I'm trying to remain open-minded, but it's not working!
Also, Ryzaki has a point about the bikini armor. It's nice that for once the female PC isn't made to look like an *trying to think of a nice way to put it*....un-nice girl.

hopefully well be able to change Hawkes appearance in DA 2....like ME...its not ideal (i agree that forcing a PC on people in an RPG is a bit counter-productive) but its something.
Oh we can change Hawke's face, class and gender. Just have to deal with the set voice and origin. (That in itself is the deal breaker to me because a voice has a larger impact than a lot of people give it credit for).

For a time, the protagonist in rpg's was male.Slowly over time this changed.
DA:O is one of the very few games (and of course ME) where a player can make a character and then go on to customize it all the way down to personality.
And then there's the companions. Some of them are strong female characters that a female player can admire or relate to.There are also LI's.That's another option everyone has.
EDIT:Some men might play as females and vice versa. The posters avatar's don't necessarily reflect gender in real life.

I don't know if that's true, dude. I for example played ME and ME2 first. I only got into DA because I had finished ME2 and was looking for some RPG to play and my friends (guy friends, if that matters) told me I should try DA since I liked Bioware games (ME especially) so much. Of course now I know they aren't that similar, but yeah.
On the other hand I agree with what people are saying in that we don't play this or that game more than others, we're just more vocal here and about these games because this seems like a 'safer' place, if you will.

^This.
It can be hard enough being a female gamer, let alone a lesbian gamer (Yes a real life one, not some basement-dweller pretending....ewww).
Bioware lets me be both of these things., and for that I am eternally grateful. If only more developers would follow suit.
And for the record, I actually love Mass Effect more than DA...by a tiny margin only, but still.

Well said
I love BioWare for including the 'alternative' option as far as romances are concerned. It lets my female created character seem more like me and less like me who has to pretend otherwise
But that's why I play, anyways. Don't mean to take the thread too far from it's original topic
