ME1: Kaidan and Wrex
ME2: Depending on mission, with descending probability
1) Zaeed + X
2) Grunt + X
3) Zaeed + Grunt

Maybe so? I haven't noticed Wrex as a squadmate in ME2

Correct. Sorry for that. Probably just wishful thinking ;)

I like to use Wrex, Ashley, Garrus, occasionally Thane or Grunt. I prefer shooting over tech or biotics. However I don't mind using Samara.

On both games it depends on my character class. However in ME2 it depends also on a mission.

ME1:
Soldier: Liara and Tali
Engineer: Liara and Ashley OR Liara and Wrex
Vanguard: Garrus and Kaidan OR Tali and Ashley OR Tali and Wrex

In general: to keep biotic/combat/tech abilities balanced. Unlike ME2, all of them were useful in almost all missions.

ME2:
Sentinel, figthing organics: Samara and Jacob. Both with pull field and Shepard with unstable warp. In addition squad incendiary ammo from Jacob.
Sentinel, fighting synthetics: Zaeed and Tali/Legion. Zaeed provides disruption ammo and tech expert - crowd control.
Any character, fighting unknown enemy: Miranda (the only character except sentinel Shepard that has both warp and overload) and squadmate with powers that Shepard don't have (i.e. biotic for if Shepard is engineer/infiltrator, etc).

In general: selecting characters profiled both for Shepard and mission.

I know that's not the question of that topic, but that is my answer: personal preferences doesn't play any role here (although I love Tali's "With you Shepord!").

Me1: Garrus + Wrex
(Tech from Garrus, and biotics from Wrex. His biotics are useful and he's really hard to be killed. Garrus not so much xD)
Me2: Garrus + Legion or Garrus + Kasumi
(My Shepard is an infiltrator. With Garrus and Legion I have the most cute sniper team. Who needs biotics if you can use two Widow sniper rifles instead? *.* Before the IFF mission, I use Kasumi and her shadow strike; she's really useful)

I assume you're asking for the most useful/used squadmates, right?

In ME2...when I played Sentinel, I was astonished to find that my Shep and Jacob of all people made a kick-ass team.

I can believe that... Pull + Warp = Kaboom, right?

Anyway:

ME1:  Depended on class.  For Soldier run, it was Liara + Tali.  For my last run as an Infiltrator, it was Kaidan + Wrex.  We had a blast.

ME2:  In no particular order... Zaeed, Grunt, Miranda (if I am not a Sentinel), Thane (biotic sniper FTW), Samara (once Reave is unlocked), Kasumi.  I'm doing my first Insanity run, and Kasumi really helps get rid of the Heavys.  Plus her reaction to Biotic God is sweet.

Wrex, Ashley, Garrus, Zaeed. Basically the badass characters. Grunt is not badass, he is annoying.

wrex. by far wrex. id take 1 wrex over a combination of any 2 others. theres a few squaddies i have tied for number two, and i dont even think they are worth mentioning. wrex is the definitive squadmate for me.

Doesn't a question like this boil down to what dif level you play and what class? Why are people responding with "I don't like this character because s/he is not sympathetic"?

ME1: If I don't play a tech class, then invariably it's someone who can open boxes (Tali/Garrus/Kaidan) + a biotic (Wrex/Liara) or a soldier (Ashley).

ME2: when playing combat classes (soldier/infiltrator/vanguard), I definitely need a debuffer and then depending on class a tech or a biotic. Miranda fits the permanent debuffer role, then it's either Garrus/Legion or Samara for me. Although Jacob has been seeing more action lately because of the GPS and the ability to spec him out of Barrier.

If I play an adept, I usually set off my own warp bombs. I'd usually keep Grunt as a permanent firepower squadmate and then add an overloader or AI hacker (Garrus/Miranda/Legion) in the fold. Sometimes, for the hell of it, I'd go with 3 biotics (like in LotSB) or a full girl squad (Miranda & Kasumi rocks!)

In Mass Effect 1, Tali was the most useful for when I was doing all the UNC missions. Liara was incredibly useful when I was doing story and combat missions, using her biotics to control the battlefield. Ashley and Wrex were brought along when I needed someone who wouldn't go down.

Speaking character enjoyment-wise? Ashley and Liara all the way.

In Mass Effect 2 gameplay-wise, well, there's no situation where Garrus is a bad squadmate. Kasumi is also very useful with Rapid Shadow Strike. But in general, I'd day Miranda and Garrus. But when ones knows what to being along to deal with certain enemies, it often gets mixed up.

Speaking character enjoyment-wise? Kasumi and whoever the heck else.

Storywise- I like all the characters, some have traits I don't like but hey so does everyone else.

Squadmates- depends on class and mission. I normally like soldier class so I generally have Miranda around, has an ability for almost any situation + her passive ability is very helpful. In the end, it depends on what I am fighting. For example I take tali and legion with me to the Overlord dlc and Legions loyalty.

ME1: Garrus, Wrex, Liara
ME2: Garrus, Legion, Tali (better character in ME2), Samara, Mordin and Jack
DLC: Liara was the best squadie in any of the DLC's, and she was only temporary. Zaeed and Kasumi are alright though.

If I had to pick one, Wrex.

He's had a violent and brutal life but he's learned from it and want to better his future and the future of his race.  I  respect that.
