For combat I usually use Garrus, Grunt, Miranda or Thane. As characters I like them all except Jacob. His dialogue just seems a little inconsistent.

Exactly. Wrex is the most unique and interesting Krogan you'll find in any of the games, as well as being badass. Grunt is dull, flat, and nowhere near as intimidating as Wrex.

In ME1 and with my Soldier class, Tali and Liara. Best balance of all 3 classes.

It gets complicated in ME2 since I played all 6 classes.

Soldier- Custom Armor
Grunt and Miranda-
(Perfect balance of offence and defense)

Engineer- Custom Armor
Legion and Tali
(3 combat drones is epic)

Vanguad- Terminus Armor or Inferno Armor
Mordin and Morinth
(I combo my charge with  Mordin's freeze attack)

Infilitrator- Custom Armor
Kasumi and Thane
(Assasins for life)

Sentinel- Collector Armor
Garrus and Grunt
(Monster Squad)

Adept- Wearing Cerberus Assault Armor
Miranfa and Jacob
(Team Cerberus)

Jack, Legion, and Wrex. Those 3 are my favourites.



Combat wise - Jack and Samara together during my Sentinel playthrough, was just unfair to the enemies because of the constant biotic combination's that occurred.

ME1 - Ashley. I didn't "like" her but she was easily the best written and original character.
ME2 Jack, Mordin and Garrus. With Garrus his writing was much better in ME2 but for me it was his LotSB dossier that really brought him to life.

ME1: Garrus & Wrex, no contest. Though I mostly run with Kaidan and Ash, until Virmire.



ME2: Much harder. Far more characters in general, and far more characters that I like. But Miranda, Jacob, Jack and Kasumi are my favorites and most used so far. I'm starting to warm up to Mordin.

I like many of the others too (because I like to change up the squad chatter). In that case, Jack and Legion have some hilarious one-liners. So, I change up my squad make-up regularly.

EDIT: In ME1 I would use Liara/Tali or Liara/Garrus a lot.  I never used Ashley very much.  (I actually used Kaiden much more than Ashley--which I assume is rare by reading all of the Kaiden hate on most forums.  It isn't that I dislike Ash as a character, its just that I preferred having biotics and tech specialists as backup.)

Gameplay-wise, my favorites in the first game were Garrus and Liara, and my favorites in the second game were Samara and Miranda. I learned to work with everybody, though, except for Legion and Kaidan.
