Right...

What am I missing here? How in the hell can I move the camera using the toolset on a laptop? I'm not trying to do major work, I just want to scroll around and such. Is there a map of the controls posted somewhere? I checked on the wiki, but it just had stuff for using a mouse.

I guess you could configure the touchpad / keyboard, but I'm not sure this can be done conveniently.

A very cheap mouse works fine (as long as it has a wheel).

Yeah, I ended up just hooking up my wireless logitech mouse to it, and I'm back in business. This will work well enough until another solution presents itself.

Some mice just don't work worth shi* pardon my language. I've never been able to properly use my lap top with my microsoft optical mouse. I've spent tons of time trying to reconfigure buttons and what have you and it's hopeless.
