Hey everyone just a quick question, a fair while back. About a year ago I think, I read that upon becoming a Grey Warden you become Sterile and that got me wondering "Does that mean the Therin line will end soon?" I cant remember the source of where I read this as it was so long ago but I was wondering if it was true?

Are all Grey Wardens Sterile? (Apart from the one exception with the pc in which magic could have assisted)

I thought that grey warden's became less fertile over a long period of time.
So new wardens are still fertile.
That's why Morrigan needed either Alister or The Warden for her little ritual...though I'm sure she could use magic if push came to shove

Are you suggesting that it was a subtle innuendo Posted Image

It's not a 100% thing and IIRC it's easier for a male grey warden to father a child compared to having a female one give birth. Having two Grey Wardens parents is impossible outside of magical intervention. Not that it has or will happen Gaider just said it's normally impossible and offered it as a possible workaround in theory/for fanfiction

If Grey Wardens were sterile, Nathaniel Howe wouldn't have born (as his grandfather was one), and neither his niece (it is mentioned he has one as a possible epilogue text). Probably neither Morrigan's son.

Anyway, from Morrigan's pre-coitus dialogue, we can assume that Grey Warden's sons have a probability to inherit the taint, but from all i've mentioned, we can assume they're NOT sterile.

He could have children before he became a Warden. And didn't he die from the Joining?

Alistair says Wardens have a hard time having children. All the Wardens he knew had them before the Joining.

Morrigan uses magic to make her baby have the taint. That doesn't normally happen.

They aren't completely sterile. I believe they are just less fertile or as someone else said, a female warden with the taint can't bear children.

The Warden can impregnate Morrigan with or without the Dark Ritual.

Female Wardens can have children. Nothing even says its harder than it's for males. A female Warden has a baby in the novel.

First I never said impossible, just harder.  Then go back and read the novel again Mezzil, there was magic involved and that Grey Warden is in fact no longer infected with the taint!  I'm still 99.9% sure that Gaider mentioned on the forums that's it's harder for a GW femle to get pregnant compared to a GW father knocking someone up and even if he didn't it's not complicated assumption to jump to. http://social.biowar...504&lf=8#455902 here the most relative thread on the topic.

Nathaniel's grandfather left to join the Grey Wardens after his child(ren) were born, and was never heard from again.  One can assume that he died in the Joining, but who knows?  Maybe he was killed by bandits on the way there.  Maybe he survived and never contacted his family because he was a jack@ss.  We'll probably never know.

That is the root of Rendon's hatred of Grey Wardens - the way he sees it, his father abandoned his family for the Grey.  What is it with Howes and daddy issues?Posted Image

My personal theory on Warden infertility is that the taint doesn't prevent conception, but that it typically kills the baby before the pregnancy is advanced enough for anyone to know about it, and that {DELETED DUE TO SPOILERY THINGS - sorry, wasn't paying attention}.

Just my opinion, though.

Lol I was more aiming that at the OP than you. I know I sometimes forget which forum I'm in too...just not usually when I actually create a thread with a spoiler in the title, lol.

But in the novel wasn't she completely cured of the taint?

I haven't seen him mention it's harder for females. He didn't even mention it  here. That link also shows how originally Wardens were to be able to have children together, but it was just almost impossible. This is what Alistair tells you in game, too. But then DG changed for some reason change it  to being impossible. What was the point of that?
