A lot of the viewable space on the social site is going to filler. There are two sidebars, one of each side, and the control panel is taking up more space on the left. Basically 1/3rd of the web page is gone. To me this makes the reading area of the forum rather small compared to other forums.
Thanks.

We will not be removing sidebars from the site, especially since the forums only have one of them. Will Not Fix.

Will these sidebars be used for marketing material similar to other websites?

You're right you have 1 sidebar that consists of two bars. Not abnormal for a forum. But you have the control panel in addition to them.
Could there be an option to toggle the control panel on/off? Hide? Or even to make it us the horizontal axis instead of the vertical.
Taking out my ruler to measure my laptop screen left to right
Total size: ~14 inches wide
Social site: just over 3 inch sidebar + 2 inches for control panel. Text area tad over 6.5 inches.
Old DA Forum: about 4 inch sidebar. text area 7.5 inches
My guild forum: Text area 7.5 inches
Gamespot forum: Text area 8.3 inches
Gamespy: text area 8 inches
IGN: text area 7.5
Metacritic: text area 10.5 inches
The Social site forum is noticeably smaller. There is so much going on the X-axis it's distracting. Moving/hiding the control panel letting the text area of posts increase by that margin would be great.

sorry - what do you mean by "control panel"? (a screenshot would help!)

What they probably mean is: you have the "black" area of the forum and around it a black and red "frame" (though only left and right, not really on the top - where you have got the navigation panel (forum, Wiki, groups) - nor on the bottom, where you have EA links.
AND you have a personal menu on the left (My Games, My Content etc), which takes up a bit of space).

Assuming by control bar you mean the space on the left containing your avatar photo and some profile options? If so i totally agree, make it horizontal at the top of the page. Would improve the "feel" of the site considerably

Control panel = Personal Menu
The area that has my avatar's pic then under that all our options for navigation. The control panel area is shrinking the text area of the forum to a below average size. My personal preference of course.
If the control panel took on a horizontal orientation like the site nav panel (Home, projects, forums ect) it would free up room to increase the text area width.

Thanks for your time.

also if p;possible please make a tab for newest forums not just newest posts/recent activity so we could just go through the new ones to find if anything is interesting, instead of having to go through so many just to find something you havent seen or missed while you were offline.
That is my only need.......I think you all did a great job with this network and find it much easier than any I have tried to navigate previously, thanks for thinking of those of us who are techno challenged :-)

I'm sure someone did a study and figured out that most of the users of the web are inexplicably still using 1024x768 in their browsers. If you look all the other EA websites, they are all 1000 pixels wide with expanding background images past that.
The difference between these forums and the others is that the control panel part of these is where the avatars are on the daforums.bioware.com forums. So take away the giant avatar space from what text space there is and yeah, we have a lot less space here.
I know for my part my eyes start to hurt trying to read this forum, combined with the colors, small text area and tiny tiny font.
