So I have ME1 on steam and I was looking to import into ME2 (on the PC, if I actually need to clarify) yet for whatever reason I can't seem to find the save-file directory. Is there a default root that steam saves games in?

Yeah, it's not in the Steam directory. I'm running Windows 7 and it saved mine by default in:
Libraries - Documents - Bioware - Mass Effect - Save
Check that. That's where my games are saved. Maybe same for ye.
