I killed everything and talked to the dying Warden, and just assumed I ended up with the ring. Now I'm trying to get back in to find the ring and I can't walk about the mine.

Am I just going to have the write the quest off?

Possibly - the ring drops from the Hurlock Dragon-Tamer.  Its possible the ring only drops if you have the quest when you kill him - not vice versa.
