I hear more people gripe about the Denerim back alley fights. I'm not trying be all bad-ass or anything here, but I play with the Dex hotfix, and I've never really had a hard time with those fights.
They all stand next to eachother on a platform. I've never seen anything that screams Fireball more loudly in my entire life.
I'm not trying to be a jerk here... but a little crowd control goes a long way.

Indeed.
FIREBALL IN THE HOOOOOLE!!!
Extra fun if you rack up fire damage boosters. I'm up to 45% boost to fire damage from gear buffs.

The fights with numerous archers are the most difficult encounters I've had to face in the game thus far. They make dragon fights look like a tea party.
I concur with this... it is immersion breaking for me, to be skewered so easily after prawning a dragon. A DRAGON! I guess dragons are on the brink of extinction because they are weak, then? Or they come up against bands of archers...

Actually, it's because you are in Denerim. I just recently made a post about how the Denerim bandits are overpowered ****s but it got deleted. I mean, maybe you still suck, but those encounters are unbalanced no matter how good you are.
Cue 15 people saying they did it on Nightmare without pausing, yadda yadda yadda...
Dark alley, right?
Its tough with all the scattershots.
I had to use wynne to get through that one on Nightmare. Alot of fights require luck rather than skill. especially versus 4+ archers spamming scattershot with 7+ melee in your face. i feel your pain.

For sure. It's certainly possible to beat her, just not on Nightmare. And not when his "leet tactics" are CoC and kiting.
I'd be more willing to believe the solo AW tank story.
She is totally beatable on Nightmare. The tactics are cheesy but so is her power level. You have to pull her out of that room. I lined up about eight large claw traps, and then just beat her to death the normal way.

but let the silly AI play to it's weakness. Go hide round a corner, Archers will b-line right into your waiting Axe/Sword/Mace.

I'm not playing on Nightmare, but I thought the guards that you encounter when you steal stuff are much worse than the non-random bandits... and those you don't really have to visit.

I always thought archers were supposed to be able to take down knights in shining armor.
If we are talking realism then no. Longbows could not pierce full plate armor at anything but point blank range and even then it would have to have been a pretty lucky shot. Plate armor had it's weaknesses but being pierced by arrows was not one of them. Now a crossbow is a different story. The amount of tension on some of the really big ones was just insane, because they were specifically designed to penetrate anything and everything. If you were going for realism, the game would give bows higher damage but much lower armor penetration, and make crossbows the ones with crazy penetration.
Then again, even in it's current state archers in DAO are not a huge threat to warriors in plate. It's the squishier rogues and mages that they really threaten, and cloth or leather has never been worth much against an arrow.

My tank can take on 6 to 8 melee guys no problem. But come 2 or 3 archers...and she is eating damage like she was wearing a thong and nothing else.
EVEN with shield cover on.
I'm sorry but I can't believe this. I've completed the game and I never had any problem with archers so long as I activated either my defensive shield abilities or had Wynne cast Heroic aura on someone.

Sleep + Waking Nightmare is also fun to use. You get to watch the archers kill each other

Heroic aura and shield defense / wall can't protect vs scattershot. Those things are autohits (which is kinda unreasonable imo) and worst of all, you can't protect your mages / rogues from that aoe spam. So far sleep since to work best for me, with fireball its a bit of luck whether you can get it off or permanently disable them before the next volley.
Unless I am missing something in the buff chain of talents and spells, I don't know if there is anything that can really protect vs that shattershot autohit. Anyone else have better suggestions besides abusing mage CC?

autohit and stun, sure okay if it was one party member or a small AOE but when it does it on all party memebr independent on where they stand without any way of resisting. (if you don't count standing in a forcefield), sure it's a short duration but 2 seconds is enough to completely screw you over.
Archers are not mages they can't fire arrows like that it breaks the game. it's cheating in my book.
It's on the list of things i will mod away to change the balance and make combat more fun.
