I've seriously messed up here.. I'm trying to defeat the Archdemon and failing badly. I've tried 6 or 7 times but I just cannot do it. I've looked up strategys etc. but here's my problems:

I have no ranged weapons - none whatsoever. I've been really lazy with this game and havent bothered at all thinking that hacking with my sword will get me through everytime (I'm a warrior by the way) and until now it has, this makes it pretty hard to defeat the demon itself but that isnt my main problem

My characters suck - the maximum level of my party is level 18, the weapons arent great either

My party selection - As I said I've been pretty lazy and I dont even have half the characters I could, my only members are myself, Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, Ogren & the dog. I left out Oghren and the Dog so now I'm left with two warriors, a rogue who cant fight for sh*t and Morrigan whos pretty useful I suppose.

Health - I've only got about 24 of them, mostly lesser poultices which simply isnt enough

So I've tried the ballista and that works well; I get the dragon down to half health with ease. And then the Darkspawn come. I can make my party fight them while I shoot the dragon but its basically a certainty that they die unless I use health poultices regularly. I normally use the mages against the dragon and then call in the dwarves or the Redcliffe soldirs btw. I can get the dragon to fly back but I simply cannot kill it. I've tried running to the archdemon and killing it with my sword but it isnt possible before either he kills me or the darkspawn swarm me. So I tried running to the other ballista which is in range and then this doesnt work because I get overcome by darkspawn before I can shoot it

So is there anything I can do to try and beat this, any little cheat, glitc just anything. I'm tearing my hair out here. I realise I've been a complete idiot by not preparing myself and everything but there's nothing I can do now, I'm going to have to try and work with what I've got but it's seemingly impossible

- Buy health potions/ingredients from Sandal at Fort Drakon. Morrigan can make potions.

- Use spirit resistance items (Archie does spirit damage). The Corruption helm you get from the darkspawn boss @ Alienage works well.

- Use CC for darkspawn. Exactly which ones depends on your specializations. Champions can use War Cry, for example.

You said Leliana can't fight well...check her tactics, too, imo. Well setup tactics can keep them from being dummies while you are not actively micromanaging -- although even with this, and even with the fact I don't like to micro a ton, I still pause frequently during that fight.

Unless you're playing on the console (the spawn points seem to be slightly different) there's a spot you can run to during the 50-25% phase where the darkspawn don't come for you. That's the part where you can't reach her with melee attacks. Calling the Dalish or the Mages can help some, too.

I found that the mages plus the scattering of people like Eamon and Cauthrien handled the Darkspawn pretty well while I focused on the dragon.  Maybe you can position your party in a location that places the bulk of those guys between you and the darkspawn but where you can still ping the archdemon with arrows and spells?

Do you have the Elf army? They are archers also if you have the Mages use them for when the Archdemon flies accross out of range of your swords. Leliana isn't using a bow? She works best as an archer would have been better to spec her up as one and give her a decent bow.

Also make use of the Ballistas if you are lacking ranged weapons. Use as much spirit resistance as possible and for swords try to use stuff that adds a bonus against darkspawn plus any runes you can use that have a bonus for damage on darkspawn so when the Archdemon calls up darkspawn you can take them out of the equation pretty quick if you get swamped.

Thankyou for all the help everyone, I had completely forgotten about Sandal so went and stocked up from him.

I came so close just now, had the dragon down to low health, the Redcliffe soldiers were doing a good job of occupying the dark spawn and I got position behind the ballista... and it wouldnt let me f*cking switch target! It kept focusing on the dragon and no matter what I did the target wouldnt change so that I could press A (this is 360) to use it, and I ended up dying. This is a bit of a problem isnt it? I've noticed it throughout the game, you cant select your target and that was just ridiculous, I'm so pissed off right now

Morrigan should be able to kill the dragon with just her staff, what is a ranged weapon by the way.(her behavior in the tactics set should be ranged )
You just need some greater spirit balms, patience and a health potion one and then.
Take control over her and just use vulnerability hex and her staff attacks.
Also, staffs like the oak branch and piece of wood are good against the dragon because her nature resistence is far lower then the other resistances and these staffs do nature damage.(also nearly all darkspawn staffs do nature damage)
Alistair should be able to use a bow too if he is alive because his dex should be in the range of 30-40.(talents  arent needed to use a bow)
Also, call a army right at the beginning of the fight.
If you are a shield and sword user, your dex should also allow it to use a bow.

Well if you really just cant ever beat them then you could just stand behind ballista's and keep firing them.. that always works

The Corruption helm, and stay to rear flanks of Archie if entering melee. His AoE abilities will kill his own troops for your bonus protection.

I always use the elven army so that the darkspawn will run to them and just leave me and my party alone to fight the archdemon.

Also, I use powerful mage spells like inferno, blizzard, etc.

And it would help a lot if you had a mage that could heal your party.. *cough* Wynne *cough*
