Romance: Liara or Tali?

1 - Rescue her on Therum.
2 - Talk about her feelings 5 minutet after her rescue.
3 - Talk of her feelings, how the asari union works.
4 - Talk AGAIN of her feelings.
5 - Sex scene.
6 - Normandy destruction.
7 - Kiss her of Ilium.
8 - Wait Lair of the Shadow Broker for a decent characterization and romance-related dialogues.
You rescue Tali much more than any other ME character, and she lacks of leadership, ok... but you don't need a DlC to have a decent conversation with her. You build a relation of respect, friendship and only then of love with her. Even if you save her that much she doesn't start to think about you in that way after 5 minutes you met her, like Liara does. You can dislike Tali's characterization, but be objective about how well is done...

...or you're a jerk to her in ME1/on Freedoms Progress (pilgrimage, Veetor,...) and she is still interested in Shepard.

You skipped past the parts where Shepard and Liara let their minds meld... repeatedly, and the part when they're forced to kill Liara's mother.

Ok, THEN it becames odd, but if you treat her like a s**t but still you wanna romance her, there is something wrong imoh. Do everithing in a plausible way and the romance is one of the best of the game... don't and then you have a teen-like infatuation. But was that different the beginning of Liaramance? Every ME 'mance can be done in a fair, interesting way, or you can act as a douchbag and laugh on the fact that everyone still seems interested in Shepard. Or Liara becames less interested if you use renegade dialogues on her every time possible?

True, but that are things unavoidable, they're part of the main plot, not of the romance.

They're really as much part of the romance as they are the plot. Heck, the mind-melding is likely the very reason why things happen between them so quickly.
And if unavoidable things don't count, then we can't count Shepard rescuing Tali on the Citadel or Freedom's Progress either, right? (And rescuing Liara shouldn't be on the list either.)

As unavoidable I meant that they're part of the story anyway, so yes, it's the same for Tali... simply those are events that becames more valuable if you romance the character, but they're not thinked only as part of it. Anyway... I agree that the mind-melding IS the thing that makes plausible how Liara falls in love so quickly of Shepard.

If had to choose which one, Tali. Tali's personality is developed more consistently. Liara's behavior is a little...strange to me. As if she's not being entirely honest as to the type of person she really is. She says she is unused to interacting with people yet in the events of Shepard's death, takes on an intimidation savvy worthy of the best con artist's bluff. For all her compassionate preaching in ME1, she develops into a ruthless character using people like tools as she explained with Sekat. No, far better to keep her at arm's length with the direction her character's developing. Maybe I'm missing something, but Liara's development is off to me
Jacob's is the worst for having that sleaziness snuck up on the player. It cheapens the Shepard we play as & anything meaningful from it comes AFTER coercing a guy we barely know into something more aptly described as "blowing off steam"

I have the impression that the game just assumes Liara and Garrus are Shepards "canon" friends.
The player is unable to treat them truly badly (compared to other characters), especially in ME2/LOTSB. A lot of Garrus conversations are "Just like old times Shepard", Liara's LOTSB banter are very friendly too.
@SithLordExarKun
You need to check your definition of "Mary Sue"
I am a Liara fan and I see enough character flaws.

"Have you faced an asari commando unit before?"
Liara stole her best lines from her mother.

As for the worst romance I would have to go with Miranda because the way her romance subplot plays out seems way to cliche to me plus I am not her biggest fan.

Except you can choose never to recruit Garrus in the first place (making a lot of that old time dialogue odd.
And honestly the assumption is kind of irritating. Particulary since ME claims to be an RPG where your choices matter. Yet I can't choose to be friendly to someone or not?
And I hated the LotSB dialogue for that very reason. Most of my Sheps are weirded out by Liara. They wouldn't be cruel to her but they wouldn't be so buddy buddy either. (With the exception of my SS. After hearing Liara handed him over to Cerberus he was ready to punch her in the face).

IMO Liara has the benefit of length, and thats about it. Tali is cuter, though, she does seem quite young
Hmmm, I've never seen Tali's face, so I had no idea she was 'cuter'. To me she looks like a scuba diver wearing a tightlaced corset.

Cuteness can be behavioral. Body language, speech patterns, accent, etc.
