It will bork your game and you'll have to reinstall it. Naturally this is a pain in the ass if you downloaded the game and don't have a boxed copy. On the other hand, it seems like my computer is running better, makes me think there's a conflict with ATI cards with this bs on your computer. Off it will stay till bioware figures out the problem.

you probably just need the latest version... but it's required by the game to run... two ways to fix it:

1) Try manualling installing the PhysX System Software from your Dragon Age DVD. It's located in software folder and it's called, "PhysX_9.09.0408_SystemSoftware.exe"

2) Go to Nvidia's site and install the latest Physx system software.

I had the same problem...fortunately, JironGhrad's advice is definitely sound and I am happily up and gaming.

I curse bioWare for entertaining nVidia's proprietary PhysX garbage. Havok and Open Source alternatives like OpenCL Pixelux and Bullet will ultimately prevail.

Die nVidia PhysX die.

Remember not to uninstall DirectX, that might break the game too!

You can't uninstall DirectX. DirectX is an integral part of the Windows OS.

Yeah that's definitely annoying to have to install third party software just to play a game, But yeah redownloading it from Nvidia's worked fine.

Could be a heat issue. If you have a second monitor, try putting a temperature display on it and see what temps show up.

Alright, debug time.

When it locks up and starts clicking, is it clicking constantly, or only when you're moving the mouse?

Try grabbing FurMark (http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/) and running a long stability test - you should also grab a similar tool to run a stability test on your CPU - and if you've overclocked anything, set it back to stock speeds and see if that fixes things.

For example, Prime95:

32bit:
files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php

64bit:
files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php

OK i ran all of the tests, it says my average cpu heat and stress are minimal, and my video card is hardly working to run anything that iv put it through, and it says my memory is stable. im not overclocked or anything. the game does this crash shortly after i start it up most of the time within 5 mins of me starting it, it seems to always crash when i talk to bhelen auducin and he tells you that your brother is going to kill you, its that tlak scene that it does it......now that i think about it, it only crashs during talking scenes......

Make sure that you have Service Pack 2 installed along with the latest DirectX 9 update (August 2009). Even though Vista is DirectX 10 you still need to install the latest DirectX 9 update. You may want to make sure that old drivers are not the issue, for that "DH Driver Cleaner.Net" is highly recommended and well worth the $10.

That's a major problem right there, no CPU should be hitting temps that high. You have to check your CPU and chassis fans to make sure they are running properly.

when i am playing any of my other source games my readout are saying its only at 55-60 if that, that 85 degress was after a good 2 hour test with furmark....its a new cpu in relative terms and its has a really nice heat sync with two fans on that work great so....

AHA! So this program is the bastard that installed PhysX. It cannot be uninstalled, and can't be upgraded. I've tried running the uninstall, using DriverSweeper and CCleaner, re-installing the same version and removing it, everything suggested by anything google can find. It can't be removed. And it can't be fixed or upgraded. I can't play any PhysX games unless I reinstall Windows XP.

How wonderful that you decided to ressurect a two-year-old thread to complain about *this*.  Since you're new, we'll let it slide... but I strongly suggest you read the forum's Rules of Conduct, linked below in my sig line.
