But first, please give me your thoughts on this storyline. There are a few plot points I'd like to hear your views on.

*SPOILER ALERT*
Okay, so I really want to hear what people thought of the final twist to the storyline. Too much? Not enough? I wanted to have a character important to the Commander and some of his squad to die, mainly to emphasise that no one is immortal in this fic. There is no such thing as plot armour. But was the loss of Two Forty Six emotionally effective? I really want to expand my ability at writing fics that don't just let you imagine the story, but also let you feel it through emotional stimuli. Please, let me know what you think.
Also, how many of you authors out there still post your fic on the Bioware Boards? I have been doing so for the past six months, but now I'm going to refrain from doing so, sticking to FF.net. I find that I don't get much feedback at all on these forums, and compared to FF.net the hit count here is incredibly small for my fic. So what about you guys?

Heh, I don't really seem to get feedback, though. Just positives. No one wants to tell me I suck? I might be as scary as my Shepards?
As a shameless plug, I have a new story called the Shepard Chronicles.
Its a series of messages that Kimbri writes to Kaidan throughout her adventures and experiences in ME2.
I put up the second post today.

Chapter 27 of my fic, Into the Unknown is finally finished. I am five weeks and fifty thousand words over budget, but the mission to Bekenstein is finally done! and now I need to sleep....

Your done?
I mean its sorta my fualt for not keeping up, but wow. Any ways from what I read of it before I went into tunnel vision and lived in a cave for a month, it was a good piece of wordsmithing.
Also, you can post on the bioware boards? Didn't know that, I just stick to FF.net.

Well, I'm not done with the entire fic. The Reapers still need their asses handed to them, but I've just finished Shepard's Seventeen, a particularly long and complicated mission that I hope doesn't have a twin sister barreling over the horizon in the near future. This one chapter has put me a month behind schedule.

Don't think I didn't consider it. But in the end I decided it was a kind of crisis point for Miranda, a little like when she goes to kill Niket. I could have let her shoot him, but my Shep's a paragon, and would try and stop her. Remember, I'm writing this like the games, so there are points where similar choice-type situations pop up. in the end, though, he's horribly disfigured, has lost all of his test subjects along with the majority of his private army, and the Illusive Man will not be handing over Oriana any time soon. He's a broken man. That should be enough for Miri.

If you were going for emotional gut-punch bummer feeling, then 246 falling was definitely effective. I read it several hours ago and I'm still kinda bummed. Which I would say means you did a good job.
That's what I was aiming for. I felt sad while I was writing it. I liked 246, but I felt that Miranda's story called for this. I've had a good bit of action and comedy in the story so far, but you also need a good bit of tragedy and rage.

And let's be honest, you never saw it coming, did you? Right up until the final paragraph.
I sure didn't. To be honest I kept trying to scroll the page down, expecting some sort of last second biotic catch or something.

Are you blocked because you don't know where to take the characters, you don't know where to take the story, or you just don't feel like writing?
If it's a character thing, Mass Effect gives you the greatest thing ever to get around writer's block: the game itself. Fire it up and go chat with the character who is giving you trouble. That may or may not be easy depending on where your save games are, but playing the game itself is a great way to get the juices flowing again. Should work for plot, too, if your story follows the game.
Alternately, search YouTube for a particular scene. There are some mighty obsessive ME Fans out there who have pretty much documented the whole game with every outcome.

As said before, it largely depends on what the source of the block is.
If you know what you want to write but the words just won't come, I recommend deciding the tone of the piece you're trying to write and looking for something with a similar feel in order to find inspiration. E.g. When I'm stuck trying to write an eerie scene (like when Shepard was on Stynos and Bolnan was striking from unexpected directions), I listen to some music that inspires the feelings I want my readers to experience (For creepy stuff, I find the Halo soundtrack quite good. Any music to do with the Flood puts me on edge!). I also frequently use trailer music, such as the stuff by Two Steps From Hell, The Immediate, Future World Music and Epic Score, to inspire me as I write. Find a playlist on Youtube and set it to just keep playing while you write. Sometimes the tone of the music just hits the perfect note for what you are trying to write.
You can do this with music, a film, a book, or even the game, as suggested by E.Z. Personally, I try to make sure I have a save at the start of every main story mission and one at each interlude section so I can relive certain moments or conversations without having to spend a great deal of time getting to them. As it is, I probably played ME2 about 10 times all the way through, but have played the Suicide Mission through at least three times as much, just looking to experience the tension I try to put into certain scenes.
If it's pure and simple uncertainty as to which direction to take, talk it out with other authors. Ask some friends what they think would be the logical next step. But also take a break. Sometimes when I get stuck, I just have to go take a walk. Doesn't have to be long, just a break from staring at a screen/ a notepad to go get some fresh air. Go for a brewski. You can think about your story, or you can just switch your mind off. Sometimes your brain just needs to catch up with you imagination.
Also, maybe consider doing a small side project while you think over your main one. I have my main fic that I'm publishing, but I also have a couple of small spin-off fics in the works that I like to tinker with when I need a breather. I also have a project called 'Uprising' that I'm working on, but its only in the preliminary stages right now. When I need to stop Into the Unknown, I go doodle a couple of things or write a few nonsense paragraphs to loosen up my brain, and just stick them in that folder for later.
Ultimately, if your stuck with something, there's no point in just staring at your screen blankly for hours on end, waiting for inspiration to strike. Step back, let your head cool, and look at it again from a fresh persepctive.

Anyways back on topic. Why do we kill a character? For me its to move the story alone in a new dirction, but I've noticed on FF.net alot of writers do it for what seems like shock value and some writers seem to be heavy in the use of their characters using mercy bullets and know one dies at all. What about you guys?

My main reason is the same as why RA Salvatore killed Chewie: The main characters were becoming invincible and boring. If you know everyone will survive, then there's no risk to the story and it becomes a little boring. But if you don't know for sure that your characters will survive, then every twist and turn wrenches at your feelings a lot more profoundly. Example: During my first run of the SM, I had avoided any guides and playthrough videos like the plague. Therefore, every choice was loaded with tension for me. When I sent loyal Garrus to lead the second team, and he staggered back, I actually shouted his name out, thinking I'd got him killed. Now, I know every inch of that level, and nothing jolts me.
Then you also do it to help make a certain character grow. For Example, in my latest chapter, I had a child who had been created using genetic material from Miranda and Shepard fall to her death. This was in part to help make my version of Miranda grow in a certain direction.
Finally, sometimes it just feels as though the story demands it. The plot twist mentioned above was not planned from the start of the chapter. It was only as I drew nearer to the end that I realised it had to be done. The other endings that came to mind just... didn't work. Sometimes these fics take on a life of their own.

Resurrecting this thread to point out that FF.net now differentiates between Male and Female Shepards. As of right now, any story that was tagged with "Shepard" is now by default tagged with "Shepard (F)" Just thought you guys might like to know!

Oh my... with all the teeth gnashing about gender and same sex romances being available in ME3, someone will undoubtedly freak if they find their Shepard has suddenly undergone a sex change operation!
