depends on what i wanna write about. fanfiction is inspired by well whatever fandom there is. poems and short stories depend on whatever bugs me or is in my head. although i choose to not follow any style for my writing (basically just free verse with no rhyme whatsoever). my inspiration? well uh...yeah life.

i have a journal full of notes and post-its and whatever. sometimes an idea pops up and i have to write it down or i just have a line going around my head an i need to write it down so i dont forget it. sometimes it leads to more, sometimes it doesn't. that's basically it.

I have a question. How do you people gather inspiration for your stories? Do you simply think them up or does it come to you while doing something?

Me? Most of my plot development actually comes from music, as strange as that sounds.

I get a list of things I want to achieve with a chapter. What parts of the character do I want to show? What plots do I need to advance?

Then I think back on moments in my life and my friends and even television to really good moments that helped portray that. Obviously this is only the starting block and you exaggerate and expand but it's a good point to start from.

I think them up most of the time.  I usually get the most inspiration from comic books.

My story Dark Avenger is inspired by dark knight returns by Frank Miller.  But mostly I think about what I think would make a good story and just let the words come out.

The one that I've finished, the two others that I've started, and the several that are still bouncing around in my head kinda formed outta nowhere.  Some of them came about from scenes in the game, where I thought to myself "well what happened after that?"  I got the inspiration for my latest story when I was out last night having dinner with friends, and I thought that a "night out" with the Normandy crew would make a great story.  Then I started inserting the characters and saw how they could fit together, the kind of plot points that would arise, and some potential dialogue.  Of course when I actually start writing, everything usually goes to hell, but I at least have a starting point in mind.

What is it Shep tells Thane right before questioning what's-his-face? No plan survives contact with the enemy?

I'm beginning to think that adage works for fictional characters, too.

I don't mean that I'm automatically going to do it better.  Just that I want to put my take on it if I don't agree with the authors.

Then there was the writing prof who told me I couldn't write at all.

My best inspiration comes from romance novels. I'm always amazed that someone got paid for this crap. That some editor read this story and thought, "People will pay for this." AND THEY DO! I can do better than that!

Then I realize the major difference: They actually finish their stories. I do not.

And then I feel mucky and spend hours on the internet instead of writing.

Yeah... finishing is not one of my strengths.

music, other computer games, tv shows, movies, life experiences, wishes, desires, what if's, just about anything, people watching, news articles, etc.

Sometimes it's a phrase/conversation I liked from a show and expand upon it. Or ideas in a game, that goes beyond what was shown on screen.

I just write whatever comes to mind and play with it/go over it later. See if it fits, or re-arrange the scene or ideas in different places for a more dramatic effect.

Not a big deal but I got of of FF.net just now and if I see another Garrus/Tali romance fic I will scream and pull my hear out. (not really)

It was all good in the begining but now the site is flooded with them and it's suffocating and done to death. I'm not hating it's just over done and as of recently going down in quality. Some of them I really like it's just the the majority of them are cringe worthy.

With my current fic, Mass Effect: Digression, the idea of the main plot just kind of popped into my mind after reading Ascension and thinking about the whole basic concept behind said idea (which I won't go into directly in case anybody here is planning on reading it and gets spoiled) and feeling like doing a bit of writing centreing around the quarians. After it's done I actually plan to have a few notes going over why I wrote it, but I'll summarise here.

After I had the concept I basically wanted to accomplish three different main objectives with the story:

1) To make the story fit in with the canon and mimic the offical novels. I wanted a story every Mass Effect fan could enjoy by doing it in the same style that Drew has and exploring more of the Mass Effect universe with fresh characters that don't interfere with established canon. I also wanted to make it somewhat epic and grand in scale, but not so much that it interfered with the games and the main story and wouldn't contradict other people's Shepards. Simply put, I wanted readers to be able to make it a story that could be unofficial canon to them... sort of an unofficial novel.
2) To make a story with almost no human characters set in the ME universe and keep it interesting. While there are humans in the story, all the main ones are aliens. I thought it was fairly easy to centre a story around a human and make readers identify with them, but it would be more of a challenge to make most of the main cast aliens and push humans into the background. The official storyline deals with humans a lot, so I wanted to try and explore some rather different territory. I think it's worked so far given the feedback, as I've got quite a few positive comments about the main characters.
3) To create a story where there is no villain because the protagonist is also the antagonist. The main character in the story, a quarian named Yalo'Pala nar Lerta, isn't exactly what you'd call a noble or even good "person" so while he is technically the protagonist of the story, he's also in some ways the villain as well. He's quite often conflicted and has goals that are understandable and even admirable, but the methods he uses are more than a little questionable. He's torn and knows what he's doing is wrong, but he feels it is necessary. His conscience almost haunts him through the voice of his dead sister, but it's never quite enough to get through. While it tends to make him feel guilty, it isn't enough to hinder him.

I lol'd, because up until I started writing Mass Effect: Going Dark, this was my issue too. This is the first story I've worked on that I fully intend to finish in its entirety come Hell or high water. That ultimatum with myself is one of the main drives for keeping it going, because it's easy to get distracted with all the shiny new games out there and blame it on writer's block. And yes, I've been there too. Don't get me wrong, though. I don't make it a chore. The very moment that I stop enjoying writing the story is the moment that it never finishes, and I go out of my way to not burn myself out. I write because it's fun, not because it's my profession or livelyhood.

@Terror_K

I think  you and I have a lot in common when it comes to why we're writing our stories. Especially the first point. My whole thing was "Man, Mass Effect is such an awesome and fleshed out Sci-Fi setting, I bet it would be tons of fun to make an original story the way Drew did." In addition to that, I really wanted to go places in the Mass Effect galaxy that people hadn't experienced before.

So I started plotting out major plot points. As I mentioned, music is my inspiration. I consider myself 'good' at feeling out the emotion of the song that the composer wanted to project. The awesome thing about this is, musical emotion is not limited to where you hear it in the game/movie/TV show/etc. That said, as I listened, I was able to dig into the music, pull out the emotional feel of a song and my mind automatically came up with more plot points according to current flow of whatever song I was listening to. Pretty soon I had this entire story laid out in my mind by major plot points, and I got really into creating characters and environments to fill it out. Mass Effect: Going Dark is the (in progress) result.

Also, this is a 'spoilers allowed' thread, so don't sweat holding back details while explaining things. The OP warns readers about potential spoilers.

With all that said, I'm not sure how often I'll get to hang around the boards in the next couple days, so let me go ahead and do this. . .

A Merry Christmas to all you readers and hard-working authors!

I'd still actually prefer not to spoil, given the nature of the story. The revelation as to what the exact specifics of Yalo's motives are is one of a few "big reveals" in the story, so I'd prefer not to divulge it. They aren't fully revealed until the 13th chapter, and all the reader is supposed to know up until that point is that he's planning on saving the entire quarian race somehow as part of his pilgrimage, and that he's going about it in a manner that's somewhat extreme. Much of the whole point of the story up until that point is to try and pull the reader in and constantly make them wonder and try and guess exactly what he's planning on doing as events gradually unfold.

Good story I left a review on FF.net.

I noticed you blew up the collector base and while I'm usually annoyed by it because so many people do it, but this is an example of how it's done right.

Anyone who checks mine out and reviews it/offers feedback, I shall return the favor. Mine is on FF.net, called Mass Effect: Fallen Soldier. You'll have to look it up under the M ratings.

Mass Effect: Going Dark chatper 15 is out for those interested. Also, if anyone decides to read it, I need feedback on whether this chapter's contents require an M rating or T rating due to violence. Thanks!

Image IPB   read your  Rescue chapter, liked it very much, being a big Alistair fan myself , I'd love to know what  happens next . Don't know where else to comment on your  writing and since my pic is already here, thought this is where I'll put it.  Totally agree with your assesment of the situation Fereldon is not ready for an Elf/Mage Queen.

Ok, read your Mass Effect Story too but somehow it did not impress me as much as  Rescue. Now this is my personal opinion only, but as the King is such a personal issue for you, the story comes across very sincerely
your writing it from the heart those kind of stories always make the best entertainers. Besides everybody is writing about Mass Effect, whereas here is a nich in which you could make your mark  Alistair has a huge fan following and I think we all would like to read more about what happens next.   Image IPB

I am curious to see what you come up with.

Oh, believe me, I'm quite recovered.  I sold a short story to an anthology right after that.

Hey there community. Just posting to let you know that the sixth chapter of my fanfic, Mass Effect 3: Into the Unknown, is now up. This chapter comes with a twist as it lays out the options for where Shepard can go next, and I'm letting the community decide! Vote for which mission you would like to see first, either here on the boards or on fanfiction.net.

I'll be using a similar system to make the big moral choices that you expect of Mass Effect, so help me get this rolling!
