Interesting about the classes deciding who lives or dies.

Oh goody, we are facing Virmire at the character creation screen, actually it's more of a tear jerker than Virmire because at least with Virmire you aren't directly related to anyone.

Again, guys, haven't people said that -

Well he doesn't technically confirm or deny either of them living or dying, he only says you get one or the other.

Anyway, personally I don't find it all that comparable to Virmire, and I think that Virmire is the bigger tear jerker; at the character creation screen of DA2, we know there is evidently a consequence to do with siblings based on class choice, but I know next to nothing about these characters' personalities and what they're like as people. At Virmire, the choice was between two people you'd served with, fought alongside, interacted with on a fairly deep level, gotten to know, potentially been romantically involved with, you know? I was attached to Ashley and Kaidan, which made it a tear jerker.

I do believe Mike Laidlaw hinted that the breast thing is an "exaggerated" part.

That just makes Varric look very very creepy.

But definitely hilarious.

So it's either
1. Varric is creepy
2. Hawke is creepy and into incest
3. Bioware has Become Gainax

Mike Laidlaw already kind of let that one out of the bag, i.e. that dirty old man Varric wasn't just exaggerating the magnificence of one Hawke sibling.

Then again, Isabela is pretty "magnificent" all on her own, so the melons seem to be game-wide, just a matter of whether you get Texas-sized or normal watermelons.

Maybe Bethany is flat chested in real life and has lamented this fact in front of Varric one too many times.

Well, Gaider did just recently use the term "survival," so maybe it is indeed a life or death metagaming decision.

I guess there is an interesting "mage to non-mage" sibling dynamic they want to play out in the game.

Warning. Rampant unfounded speculation.

If you are a mage, perhaps Carver will lament how his father was closer to you and Bethany.

And if you are not a mage, well, it's really up to you to decide how to act, but perhaps Bethany was the favorite and you can act jealous or not.

Also it makes sense that your class could have an affect on who live and dies, if you are a non mage the ogre smashes Carver while you fight and while Beth does some magic in the distance.

And if you are a mage doing magic too, perhaps a smart Darkspawn sees two mages being a big threat and sneakily kills Bethany or whatever.

It makes sense that Hawke having a different role in combat can have an affect on a battle situation.

You know its things like this that make me glad I am playing as a mage in my first playthrough, I don't have to think about this at all.

*ponders situations where that would arise*

1. Bethany and Varric get it on
2. Varric is a part-time psychiatrist
3. Those spies leave very detailed reports

I think it is number 2, and that is how he gets all his info. Patient/Doctor confidentiality wasn't around in Kirkwall.

Gah. I wanted Carver but I rarely play mages.

Guess my first playthrough instead of being 2HD warrior Hawke is going to be a mage. Bah.

I find it a little amusing that some people are looking on this as a loss of choice, when it was never a choice to begin with. And it's not really comparable to Virmire-- that was a decision you had to make late in the game after you'd had the opportunity to get to know both of the characters involved.

Personally I think some people just need some time to let their preconception go and allow it to sink it a little. This is actually a very cool element in the story, in particular for those who value story above all else, and the fact that either one character or the other survives is ultimately irrelevant when it comes to your personal enjoyment of the game. You'll see. :)

I think the problem is not the loss of choice, but rather in which point in time the choice is made. It's made at the character creation, rather than during story.
I knew someone from Lothering was going to die (scaping unscatched, while enjoyable, doesn't seem to be that good for "drama"). I guess I just expected that, apart from the possibility of either sibling dying, you could throw Aveline to the lions as well. But that would need to have carver as a rogue and on each run kill your doppleganger.

I suppose I should add the caveat that even though I dislike this choice, it's a minor one and I don't think that BioWare is out to destroy PC gaming or that David Gaider personally hates me and wants me to suffer.

But... I do want you to suffer. A little.

It warms the ****les of my heart to know you care. A little.

Edit: Hey, ****les is not a swear word. I learned it from a childhood nursery rhyme.

I find it a little amusing that some people are looking on this as a loss of choice, when it was never a choice to begin with. It's good to give things a bit of time to sink in instead of going by one's first reaction, which is usually, "That's horrible! This isn't what I expected, so it *must* be bad."

This is actually a very cool element in the story, in particular for those who value story above all else, and the fact that either one character or the other survives is ultimately irrelevant when it comes to your personal enjoyment of the game. You'll see.:)

I hate to say it, but you're probably right. I will probably play through the game, enjoy it, and then play again with a different class and enjoy the difference having Bethany instead of Carver (or vice versa) brings.

Nevertheless, this is the DA forums and all the cool kids grouse about things. Just let me be irrationally discontent over a change for a bit longer. If nothing else, other forumites seem to enjoy having me in that position for once.

This. I only played one mage in DA:O, and that was for the achievements.

This just seems like a horrible way to implement the decision, keeping in mind that  I don't know what further consequences are going to arise from it. As Maria has said, I just don't like knowing now that my choice of class isn't going to be just what I want to play, but which will have the outcome I want.

I'm also aware that part of the reason I dislike this is because I was planning on saving Carver on most playthroughs. I'm partially annoyed that it will in fact be Bethany that I'm dragging along for all but one or two games.

Heh, same here. This is the first DA2 related news that has actually made me upset.

Anyway, I could see myself in that position too. That the story element that forces this mechanic is pretty damn cool and thus I'll be okay with it.

I suppose the closest comparison one could find in Origins is not being able to be Queen/King unless you're a noble, which actually upset many people, but it was a very logical decision.

I'm just trying to picture WHY you can't have Bethany as a mage or Carver as a rogue/warrior. I can't come up with any scenarios really, so I'll just try to forget about this and let the game surprise me once it comes out.

But...I *know* that when I choose my class, I'm dooming one or the other sibling to getting smushed by an ogre.  I see how it's different from Virmire, but I still feel like not being able to save both is a loss.  But of course, I can't judge until I've played.

At least Mama Hawke will be safe...that's pretty refreshing.
