I read this far and was like, "Hells yeah! But what does this have to do with what I said?"

...and have both.

Then I thought, "Wait? Incest?"

I mean, I'd have a different death on each class!

Finally, I understood what you meant and lost interest.

Given she's the only "tank" thusfar, couldn't that prove problematic?

I sort of remember hearing from somewhere that you had the choice wether or not they joined you, but I might be mistaken.[/quote]
I suppose it would be the players fault if you can decide not to take her along.

Was kind of hoping to go for a Bash Brothers type play through. :crying:

C'est la vie.  I'll live, so I guess I get Carver for my first play through and then get Bethany.

I don't like the choice of siblings coming down to which class you choose.

I am gonna pout so hard over this.

Just another reason to get it on the PC over consoles.

Bless those modders.

Well, it could be worse I suppose. At least it's not based on gender.

There will most likely be class specific dialogue that would be impossible to mod without being completely immersion breaking.

Your mind is a filthy cesspool of corruption. I like that in a person.

EDIT: Holy ++++ the "your/you're" typo!

Bethany vs. Carver is based on class? Bummer. I wanted to play a male mage and a female warrior, which means both my playthroughs will have same-sex siblings. :(

I kind of wanted different-sex siblings. I now feel like my mage playthrough is going to be a bit of a sausage-fest.

Oh no, some people might get upset with me over a choice I made as applied to DA II's design! That's never happened before!

Think about the why of it.  The Devs said that there's a reason for doing it this way that makes sense in the story, they're not just doing it to make you sad (that was, at best, a secondary factor).  Of every combination of classes this allows, it hinges around the mage, its the only class that MUST be in your family.  So we can guess that having a mage in the family is somehow important to the story.  Given that we're going to a city with tyranical templars who rule over an oppressed Circle, a city that said templars control to the extent that they can unseat and install the titular ruler seemingly at will, and a city we know we're going to end up in charge of, it seems that a major part of the story is going to revolve around conflict brought on between the templars and the apostate of the Hawke family.  And this way of determining which sibling dies based on which class you choose ensures that you'll be directly involved in that.  If I'm at all right about this, I think its actually a pretty elegant solution.

I don't recall reading that the Templars were 'tyrannical' or that the Circle was 'oppressed.'

The Devs have stated a number of times that the Templars in Kirkwall keep a much tighter and harsh leash on the Circle there than they do in Ferelden.  I suppose calling it "tyrannical" or "oppressed" depends on whether you think Mages should be in Circles to begin with, but the point still stands that the attitude of the Kirkwall Templars towards apostates should be fairly draconian.

If that's the reason I sort of wish both Carver and Bethany were mages. :/

Bah. So if I want Derp I have to play a mage. :(

Wow... ok, to counter some of the ceaseless ****ing here, I'll voice a differing opinion.

I don't CARE how the devs determined which sibling I get... I don't know a damn thing about them and I likely wouldn't know anything about them in the short amount of time it sounds like you know them before the fecal matter hits the oscillator.

How do any of you even know if you'd like Bethany? Or Carver? We know NOTHING about their personality.. we've seen a screenshot at best... hell we don't even know if they'll be permanent party members... they might leave the party soon after like the 2 other npcs in DA:O during The Joining.

Look at it this way, if anything it encourages you to try out more story arcs that you might not have otherwise "chosen".... You're fooling yourself if you think you always have a hand in your "fate" in life... sometimes "stuff" just happens.... this is one of those moments in game... not every event in the character's life can be a pick and choose event, some things are just going to happen.

Geez, game isn't out.. you haven't even gotten a chance to interact with these characters, and you're all raging like a bunch of toddlers.

Sure, I see why they did it from a gameplay perspective, and I'm sure I'll like Carver as much as Bethany. I just find it a great pity that my choice of class is now competing with my preferred sibling for either sex. I really wanted to be a big brother to Bethany, but I know for sure that I won't be playing a non-mage male Hawke until at least my third playthrough.

You also always get a non mage, so I'd assume theres a reason for that too. Favoured child issues, or perhaps the effect having a mage in the family effects the rest of it.

I'd say having an apostate sibling in a heavily templarized town will be a great source of plot. Specially if the non magical brother is drafted into Templar ranks.

Not only that but we're coming at it from a metagaming perspective. In reality its really nothing different to the deaths in the different origins of DAO right up to the tower of ishal. What if I wanted to keep Jory?
