Think about the why of it. The Devs said that there's a reason for doing it this way that makes sense in the story, they're not just doing it to make you sad (that was, at best, a secondary factor). Of every combination of classes this allows, it hinges around the mage, its the only class that MUST be in your family. So we can guess that having a mage in the family is somehow important to the story. Given that we're going to a city with tyranical templars who rule over an oppressed Circle, a city that said templars control to the extent that they can unseat and install the titular ruler seemingly at will, and a city we know we're going to end up in charge of, it seems that a major part of the story is going to revolve around conflict brought on between the templars and the apostate of the Hawke family. And this way of determining which sibling dies based on which class you choose ensures that you'll be directly involved in that. If I'm at all right about this, I think its actually a pretty elegant solution.
