Sure, I see why they did it from a gameplay perspective, and I'm sure I'll like Carver as much as Bethany. I just find it a great pity that my choice of class is now competing with my preferred sibling for either sex.

But this is only because you chose to obtain spoilers.

Daveth I could understand, but Jory?

Besides, they're filler NPCs and we knew from the beginning. These are actually full-fledged companions.

i wonder if templars will react to you being a apostate. Thatd be sweet. Or for the warriors and rogues the chance to go 'hey back off pal'

thatd be sweet.

Sweet.

Haven't we seen game play footage with both Carver and Bethany though? Perhaps if you play a rogue you get to keep both!

Geez, game isn't out.. you haven't even gotten a chance to interact with these characters, and you're all raging like a bunch of toddlers.

Making an entire post to insult people is equally childish.

Granted.

But 16 pages and I saw no counter posts, just whining... had to add whining on the other spectrum to formulate some modicum of balance.

It was just an example. I hated Jory as well.

Finally a preview that really, really pisses me off

Of course from a story standpoint it could make sense, but from a gameplay standpoint it is frustrating. Normally it would be a plot choice presented in the game, so if I wanted a party stacked with Mages I could. But here? No, nope of course not. Of course not as in I would never have thought of it. It sounds like a mechanic from older games that died a rightful and justified death.

**** its just a mechanic that hampers the version you own as you can bet within a short amount of time ****ing modders will fix this element.

See, I actually disagree with this. Considering at what point in the game this occurs, I think that normally one of the two of them would just die in every game. I don't think this would work as an in-character choice. I mean, Hawke's trying to choose between a brother and a sister; I, as the player, am trying to choose between two characters I've known for fifteen minutes.

Name one "older game" that did this. Just one. No? Oh well.

This is a brand new kind of game mechanic, and I think it feels very next-gen. It gives you a ton of replayability and it takes choices&consequences to a whole new level: if you want to be a powerful mage, you have to pay a heavy price.

By choices and consequences you mean something that is reliant on a stat screen choice and not something that is an actual choice presented to the player in a cohernt manner.

It's a "gotcha!" moment, pure and simple.  Completely ****s over the Carver character because you can bet that most players will play as a Warrior.

Well the news over the two siblings is definity going to make me go at least two playthroughs now. The devs must be laughing to themselves on how some of us are antagonizing over which sibling to bring with us. I was sure I would play a warrior the first time through, but now i'm not so sure.

Also, as someone pointed out, we know nothing of our are siblings and i'm still not sure who I want to take.
Anyone else conflicted or am I acting ridiculous?

class selection is one the most far-reaching choices you make in the game, and you notice the consequences every time you go into battle, try to pick a lock, etc. etc. Expanding it from a gameplay-focussed choice into a deeply personal experience is genius storytelling, and I think you'll feel the same way once you've played the game.

KOTOR 2 had a similar choice

and I did not feel the same way when I played that game

It just meaned that I never got whats his face into my party.

However going too far to the Sith or too far to the Jedi would influence my party.  Based on my decisions within the game.  This is how it should be done.  MOrality not some gender/class based thing.

I don't know, I can see why BioWare chose to do it this way but as a matter of personal preference I'd rather have the brother/sister dynamic to the mage/not-mage one.

Carver kind of does get short end of the stick there -- even with completely even preferences towards the classes, out of three possible classes to choose only one results in him staying around. ..

Well, unless mages are played as much as the other two classes combined.

I don't like the class lock, but the technical limitation isn't really why. I think the idea of guaranteeing 1 sibling death is great, but I also think classlocking is a hugely missed opportunity for an early game dramatic choice. You choose who lives and dies. This would have been one of the most memorable choices of any Bioware game, instead it is decided by your character creation process.

Aw man! I wanted a double-barrelled glass cannon in the form of me and Bethany as mages. Our power level would be over 9000. We'd probably get killed pretty quickly if swarmed, but I do like playing with mage-heavy parties sometimes.

I have absolutely no idea why it's such a big deal that something you do affects the game. The posts in this thread boggle my mind.

Except you don't really know anything about, and thus haven't, as a player really developed attachments to either at that point.

I think it's incredibly elegant. It creates both balance in the party and family, giving you the same dynamic in any direction you take it.

The only problem it creates is in adding that extra layer to the primary class choice, and that's only really a problem a) if you have no interest in one character or the other, and at this point I think that's an odd thing to say or B) if you want to get to know carver but find you really dislike mage gameplay.
