I guess I meant befurred. It's like a fancy Circle mage robe.

Indeed, thanks. Hm, wonder if there will be any "winter weather" in the game and outfits to suit?

Well, the more northern the map, the warmer it gets in Thedas, so probably not. It would be fantastic though, to have different seasons as the game progresses.

Ehh the Carver or Bethany thing is fine. There were plenty of previous Bioware games with incompatible party members (Edwin or Dynaheir, anyone?). Plus this increases replayability.

I like it.

I am SO excited for the Rivalry / Friends tree! I hated being a goody goody in DA:O for the sake of stat bonuses and keeping my team around. I can't wait to explore being at odds with someone.

"Some options, such as combat moves or romance, will only become available with a rival, nicely removing the urge to just suck up to everyone following you around."

Yes yes yes! I love that too. You have to be a rival in order to romance or get close to certain characters. Yes!

You just know that it will affect the "epilogues" as well. Hopefully.

It's a "gotcha!" moment, pure and simple.  Completely ****s over the Carver character because you can bet that most players will play as a Warrior.

Good god, why.  I'll never understand that.

Giant, two-handed sword.
Having a orge pick you up and smash you in the face half-a-dozen times and being able to shrug it off.
Metal armor.
Being able to benchpress your companions.
First into the fray.
Being able to protect your companions by serving as a physical barrier with large sword.

I read the italized part as "orgy". It gave the post a very unique meaning.

hmmm, even if you only get to have one as a permanent (maybe neither of them are) companion.

can they both live at least?

Maybe I will have to play a mage for a playthrough for once to see how Carver is :P

Hm, I never mentioned it-- that dragon pliers staff? Kind of ugly. IMO.

Loss is a big part of the Dragon Age story. There's not an Origin where you don't lose something or someone important to your character, even if it's just your own freedom. Doors close upon you all the time in that game, and often it's despite you doing everything right. My Male Alienage Elf still wonders if he could've made a life with his bride, but that path is barred from him. My male Nobel will forever wonder what kind of man his nephew could've been.

Now, my Hawk will forver wonder if there could've been some way to save all of his family as they fled the blight.

I lost nothing in the mage origin and in fact I gained freedom from the circle. It was a happy origin for me in every way.

Imma feeling lazy to slug through the rest of the pages, so I would like to apologize in advance if this has already been mentioned:

My guess about the Carver/Bethany thing is that this only happens in the Prologue. When Varric first introduces your Hawke, he/she automatically gets one of the siblings as a companion. By the time the main storyline begins, you can still have both. We know there was a video showing an NPC that looks like Carver getting squashed by an Ogre, but I'm still hoping there's a way to have both siblings alive even if it is at the latter part of the game.

The design team also decided to inject a bit of common sense into the combat. "If you're a mage, and you're carrying around this big stick, why can't you hit someone with it?"

I could have sworn that you could equip two sets of weapons and switch, that archers DID have a melee archer skill (kind of weird, but you could shoot people point blank and not have your shots interrupted), that both mages and rogues had a low level stun ability that allowed them to get out of melee range, etc.

DAO could use improvements in areas, but saying they "now" have something they already did have is kind of odd.

Yes but you couldn't hit them with your stick. What's really great is that this was something many people asked for in the DA:O forums from the very beginning. Of course lots of people defended Bioware's choice. It was stupid to hit people with a stick. Mages can't fight and shooting magic from the staff was more magicky blah blah.

Also this class based thing deciding what happens to your sibling is utterly stupid and makes me even more certain that I will wait for the price to drop before I consider buying it.
Oh there's this great story based reason that will totally change my mind! Sure there is David. Sure there is.

Im hoping for that. Theres still a screenshot going around from the rise to power trailer that looks like it has all 3 Hawke siblings running through kirkwall.

having your character playfully twirl said massive sword on the character selection screen is a cherry on top, hopefully the animation  finds its way into normal combat

So... do we still get both Bethany and Carver if we don't take Aveline with us right? Is that part confirmed yet or just the class part? Hmm.

I'm so confused about what class/sex combo to play now. My best-laid plans have been thrown into disarray.

I may have to play my warrior lady first...

I guess Bethany'll help me get the mechanics of mage progression down in the first playthrough, so my mage playthrough will be more rewarding.

Holly Molly people are relentles with this Bethany Carver topic....

What I'm wondering is whether this whole rivalry system is less realistic than that of Origins, where companions could get pissed at you and bounce, like people in real life. The article seems to suggest that they will never leave.

My problem is that I do know this and so I will metagame. When I sit at the character creation screen, my thought process will not be 'what class do I want to play?' but 'who do I want as a companion?'

spot on, thats what I will be doing.

I had a feeling that this would be what they would do regarding Bethany and Carver; kill one off so that Hawke's escape has an element of tragedy to it while still maintaining your party's balance. I was just about to post a topic about it a few days back but I lost the nerve when I remembered a scene from the "Rise to Power" trailer-- at about 00:38 you see a cutscene of what looks like Carver with his giant sword out and Bethany running with Hawke not too far behind. Going back it still really looks like the three of them...perhaps there's a way for the whole Hawke family to survive?

Sadly no. You can only save one sibling. The other one bites the dust.

He sometimes chooses to leave, too. Although granted, that instance also causes plenty complaints.

That is a player driven choice though; I'm unsure if you can annoy him enough to just outright leave but the choice at the Landsmeet he tells you what will happen if you decide against him.

The final blow gives you no choice at all.

You can't get rid of hm even with -100 approval by non LM means. That makes for and interesting plathru because some of his comments to the players actions why majorly negative approval are very funny Posted Image

Yes, well, I've consistently ranked companions as being more important to me than RPG 'purity,' graphics, or combat.

I assume most of the people who are upset about the new UI or hate that they can't dress Isabela in pants would be indifferent to this as it doesn't impact gameplay.

lol, well Maria, I  would rather not choose sibling based on my PC class choice same as you for the reason you so eloquently stated, I also aren't a big fan of the new UI and like full NPC inventory choices rather than fixed outfits so where does that put me? sitting on the fence I expect Posted Image

That is the problem with generalisations and stereotypes... always exceptions.

Stil, everything I have read so far on DA2 on balance indicates its going to be a very good game, sure there are positives and negatives but its overall postive so far for me.
