Meh. I wanted to have Bethany on my Mage Hawke playthrough. >:"It's a particularly interesting choice because one of your earliest party members is your sibling (your brother or sister, depending on what class you chose), and as you might expect, a whole lot of baggage comes with them."
Dammit.

"awash in color", eh? *rejoices*

And then on the other screenshots and the combat preview we got so far Kirkwall seems to be lot of whites, greys, browns and otherwise neutral colours with a splash of reg/gold here and there. The whole negative space thing and how the backgrounds are supposed to stand out less than in DAO, not more.
There's few parts in the preview that read as if the author wasn't actually paying much attention to the things they're describing, but rather indiscriminately parroting what they were told, or what they derived from what they were told.

Same here. I will be slightly dissapointed if this makes it all the way to the finished game.

It sounded like they were getting the awash with colour thing from the cutscene which plays when Hawke arrives in Kirkwall.

The article is correct. You'll get Bethany if Hawke is a rogue or warrior (regardless of gender), and Carver if Hawke is a mage.
Thanks for clearing that up! I assume this occurs during the prologue seen in many of the leaked videos?

That kind of stinks- can't even make a choice in the matter its just predetermined by the Plot Gods? Eh, warrior Hawke it is then...

I don't like playing warriors, so I will at least have a chance to get Bethany and Carver in different playthroughs.

Bang! Speculation, all cleared up. That's what most of the forumites thought anyway.

OMG YES!
One thing i don't really understand is...why bring the spiders back? A lot of people fear them in reality, and i was personally disgusted by them more than anything (well not more than the harvester). If we don't have the toolset i won't be able to turn them into deepstalkers anymore

Oh no, some people might get upset with me over a choice I made as applied to DA II's design! That's never happened before!

This might not be so applicable what with the combat changes, but a hard cap on mages makes a lot of sense from a balance perspective. If only to limit healing, rather than CC this time around.Upsettingshorts wrote...

Except that's not really a choice made during the game. That's an arbitrary decision based on a choice made at the beginning of the game before the story hits. Wouldn't it be more impactful for the player to have to make the sadistic choice of wither leaving your sister or brother behind?

Not that this is something you're really concerned about, I imagine, but this came down to a design decision. I understand that you're deciding who you like more based on a meta-gaming decision (using information gleaned from previews, along with assumptions as to what Bethany and Carver are about) but someone who's playing the game for the first time won't know these things. How would they make such a decision, based on characters they've only just met? It would feel hollow at best-- and providing a decision that indirectly did the same thing (meaning you weren't directly deciding between them, but whatever decision you did make had the same end effect) might also feel cheap.
This did what we needed for the story to work-- and personally I really like the fact that both Bethany and Carver are fully-realized characters, providing you family members that aren't killed off right at the beginning of the story who are also going to work as part of it. I would caution you not to assume the worst about characters you haven't met yet and a story you don't know about... but you are of course free to jump to whatever conclusions you like.
