The article is correct. You'll get Bethany if Hawke is a rogue or warrior (regardless of gender), and Carver if Hawke is a mage.

But the Destructoid review had a rogue Hawke with Carver?  Or does everyone play in the prologue?

I asume it's a scene from the prologue.

Ok, I liked the Destructoid preview much better.  It was better written and explained things better.

The Escapist preview was worlds better than most previews to this point on not spouting, verbatim, the PR talking points for DA2.  But it has the essence of them and still some minor snark at those who dislike the "changes"....

That said -

Between the Destructoid and Escapist previews, I think I'm close to be sold on the new skill system and definitely the changes to "crafting".  Both sound excellent to me.

As I've finally reconciled (for myself) that DA2 is far more ME style of RPG than DA:O's style of RPG (and I'm talking character creation and story for said character, not game mechanics here), and that DA:O was more of an anomaly for BioWare than a norm... I have adjusted to Hawke being a "set", voiced protagonist.  Not what I'd prefer... but at this point I'm over it.  But I am glad i've had months to adjust to it.

I disagree fairly strongly with many of the sentiments in the Escapist preview - about combat (it wasn't hard at all on normal by any standard I can figure) and about the changes to the dialog system (the "drama" wasn't lost by having to pick a line of dialog for me as I lose drama having a stupid circle appear and saying to me "happy, jerk, angry? which tone to respond in?", though I lose "speed" and "rhythm" by having to take the time to read through the dialog options (not much, and it doesn't bother me, but it's what I feel is "lost")), for example...
and I dislike the tone of the article...

but reading between the lines it does seem to back up somewhat the Destructoid preview, overall, and hence I'm tentatively excited again for DA2.

I wonder who it was that he tried to tell was cute, but instead invited them to bed.

Not sleeping with Isabela is probably a difficult challenge.

My problem is that I do know this and so I will metagame. When I sit at the character creation screen, my thought process will not be 'what class do I want to play?' but 'who do I want as a companion?'

I can't disagree with this.

I now feel like I'm balancing the class I want to play against the potential party composition I want.

Why? You could always do a second play through, problem solved.

If I can be indulged, is this screenshot in-game, or were one of the models replaced by someone who is actually there?

Whoa boy, the boards are gonna have fun with this one:

"People generally hated the silent protagonist," he says, but that wasn't the only reason to adopt a main character who could speak for themselves; Having the hero stand stoically while drama erupted all around them "seemed to be doing a disservice to the storytelling."

While I'm one of those people who seriously did hate the silent protagonist, those that love it seem to be in the clear majority 'round these parts.

It's like they read my mind, man. Like, whoah, man, that's like, totally what I was thinking.

It goes to show you the reception of the feature of VO, and goes back to the whole, well, what actually made DA:O succesful.

It could be something like that. Or for example, making use of the framed narrative thing by having "Cassandra interrupt" happen at this point and putting the player briefly in her shoes, allowing them to (optionally) question which of the siblings actually died.

Varric: And that's when Hawke summoned a giant dragon to take--
Cassandra: -Renegade Interrupt!- I'm tired of your disingenuous narrations! *punches Varric out cold*

THE END

Interesting new info, particularly knowing in the present there is a revolution occurring that has left the Chantry all but powerless.

The stuff about Bethany and Carver is unfortunate, no magic siblings or swordsman brothers, but I suppose I can't make an informed judgment on whether it was worth it without knowing what the devs know.

Here's a position I don't get.  Why not roll a warrior or rogue, and then during combat simply "play" Bethany?  To you is there an intrinsic value to your protagonist simply being a mage?  Because if it's simply a question of gameplay, the option I present does exist.

Basically, yes, at least for me. I prefer to be a mage versus play one. Hopefully with the CC Carver summons less of the herp-derp.

We went with what works based on the context of the story rather than allowing the player to make an arbitrary decision-- and I'll leave it at that, sorry.

So there must always be just one hawke mage in the story to make it work, you or your sister... has this something to do with Flemeth and a difficult decision to make at the end of the game?

I was hoping he meant someone besides Isabela. I think sleeping with Isabela is a given, whether you play a male or female Hawke.

Oops. But did she play Male Hawke or Female Hawke? I missed that part in the article if it was mentioned.

Not end, story change -- Varric admits the giant dragon was actually a giant rat encountered in the larder.
The sheer potential of such mechanics is staggering. And they could use the Seeker's logo for the promptImage IPB

I just double-checked...

she seemed to be very gender neutral with pronouns and stuff, using "they" and "the character" often.

One could assume she played a female character, but that's just an assumption based on nothing but her own RL gender, so it's anyone's guess really.  Unless someone wants to Twitter her.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but what I'm getting is that if you roll a mage, your sister Bethany dies at the hands of an ogre, and if you roll a warrior or rogue, your brother Carver dies at the hands of the same ogre. So you can only have one sibling?

I must be mistaken.

When it comes to who lives and who dies, unless on of the people who worked on it directly state anything, I am not believing anything I hear until I have the game and guide in hand.

This brings I tear to my eye, seriously. I'm been trying to argue this for the last four months, and yet it never seemed like anyone was ever interested in listening to me. I feel at least a little happy that someone beside me can now point out Bioware's design history re: the last decade (give or take).
