I do find it both interesting that of all the folks from ME1, the one who's unconditionally thrilled to see Shep and actually shows it is Wrex, badass cynical mercenary Renegade Wrex. Wrex was under no obligation to even help you in ME1, and you only hung out for a year or so, but it seemed to make such a powerful impression on him based on his reaction.
Again, this is completely in line with Wrex's character if you went through all of his dialogue in the original game. He wanted desperately to elevate the krogan to something beyond savage muscle for the galaxy and fled the krogan systems when he couldn't do it, and spent a couple centuries living down to the galaxy's expectation of his species.
Then this human spectre shows up with some damn fool mission to stop some geth, talks to him, listens to him and ultimately inspires him to be a better individual. ("Hell, you've done more for me than my family ever did.") Was it because Shepard was a reaper-stompin'-galaxy-savin'-badass? Partially.
But you could also infer that Wrex saw a single member of the human species, not very well regarded by the rest of the galaxy, step up and change the course of not just his people but the entire galaxy for the better. Nobody wanted to listen to Shepard or support him. His superiors actively tried to thwart him at one point. But Shepard fought through it and succeeded in spite of all that. That had to make an impression.
So what does Wrex do after Shepard dies? He goes back to Tuchanka and tries again.
And it worked. Or, at least it's starting to.
And right when Uvenk is prattling on to the obviously bored and frustrated clan leader about how pointless and dangerous Wrex's plan's are, who comes strolling in after being gone for two years?
Shepard... his friend.
