The idea that the player must immediately know everything the PC does is problematic at best and unworkable at worst. I don't know what it's like to be from Lothering. I have no idea what it's like to have an apostate father or Bethany as a sister despite the PC knowing them for all of her life.

Why then should I immediately know my relationship with an NPC that the PC has interacted with for a year? As long as the game allows me to fill in that gap in knowledge with contextual clues, it has done its job.

Right-- we did the same thing in Origins. The player doesn't know everything the PC does, and rather than having the PC go around saying "Who are you?", "What is an elf?", "I live in an Alienage? What's that?" we instead present some information in context... without necessarily establishing for the player how they feel about such things. We walk the same line here.

This kind of worries me. Otherwise most things be positive in my regard.

Worked fine in The Witcher.  In that case though, Geralt has amnesia and so (some of) the characters basically have to delve into an expository monologue when he asks, "So um, how do I know you?"  Hopefully DA:2 fills in the gaps for the player a little more deftly.

Whether it works fine is, of course, a matter of opinion.  I was amused by Geralt at times, just like I'm currently amused at my ME2 renegade Shepard (who kind of reminds me of Geralt in the delivery).  Don't particularly feel attached to the characters, though, or like they are "my" character.  Rather I'm watching them versus playing them.  It's still fun, but not really roleplaying to me.

Wait, so the whole first year in Kirkwall (out of what, ten?) is skipped entirely?

That's... oddly convienient.

So there won't be like, narrative jumps from TimeSpace 1 to 3, we meet with good old chap Z, he seems like a nice guy, we play Hawke as friendly, then  jump to TimeSpace 2, and Hawke meets Z who comes off as a bastard?

Are the narrative jumps are straightfoward in time, or do we jump randomly?

I know it probably doesn't matter for anyone, but what's Mama Hawke's name besides Amell?

That isn't what I was talking about.  I was only talking about exposition and dealing with gaps between the PC's knowledge and the player's knowledge.

First person vs. third person narrative immersion and enjoyment is another matter entirely.

Have they released mama Hawke's name? It feels odd to refer to her as 'the PC's mother.'

Plus, it's much more workable than the "I have amnesia and I must find out everything!" scenario. How many times has that been brought out of the old bag of tricks?

Like what I hear and see so far judging from the preview. I'm even more excited for the game. I like the skill web UI and the stat UI- very clean.

I'm not too concerned with feeling like an outsider in the story just watching Hawke. The Witcher managed to pull it off, and ME1+2 to some extent.

The only thing I don't like...the spiders are back. Meh.

Interesting... looks like you are really making the most of the frame narrative, I'm looking forward to see how it works out.

I'm not concerned about the characters Hawke knows but the player doesn't, it worked well with the Cousland family, Leske or any other character in the origins.

While I still hold several reservations about things missing -
many things were missing in DA:O from what would be the "ideal" cRPG for me, and I still loved that.

This preview from Destructoid, if accurate, has added much to the PC Gameplay video in making me much less worried about this game.

...

it may be my lesson to learn here that ALL marketing sucks (something I did "know" before and yet..) and that I need to distance myself from ads and marketing for ANY product I have an interest in - which makes it very hard to learn things about said products, but apparently the focus of marketing is to alienate me with tactics that appeal to the lowest common denominator -

and lowest common denominator in this context means the least offensive, most appealing to the broadest possible audience... it does NOT mean "catering to idiots or children" as some might try to interpret it.  Just trying to cut that strawman off at the pass...

I'm still not a fan of the art or how combat looks... but I'm at the point where I'm quite willing to accept that I may well be a fan of how the combat FEELS when I'm playing.

...

and with the Escapist preview yet to read, I think I may be back in the excited category...

----

As for the narrative, THIS is where I have an almost "faith" in BioWare and the game writers.  I don't give blind loyalty to anyone or anything, but I trust that BioWare's story telling will be right up my alley and this I have no doubt will be no exception.

I'd rather make my own character, whole cloth, and not be a Jedi-former Sith Lord, or a Bhaalspawn, or a Champion of Kirkwall... but I can still have fun with a more limited process in creation if the story is good enough.

The framed narrative is one of several things that I have been very much anticipating.  The time jumps, skipping over filler drama, fast-forwarding past some more mundane occurances or even character introductions is fine with me, personally.

Isn't the whole idea of the framed narrative to expand on the players amount of roleplay capability and "Involvedness"?
I had the impression that the tighter narrative allowed for more opportunities for the player to shout his opinions at people ;)

That's not to say that some other writers at the event didn't try to Dynasty Warriors their way through the first few hours of the game, but they saw the game over screen a lot more often than I did.

That should be reassuring to all those worried about DA2 difficulty.

I'm sure David or another writer will correct me if I'm mistaken, but I can't recall a single instance while working on the game where I saw a dialogue that told me 'THIS PERSON YOU'VE NEVER MET BEFORE IS SOMEONE YOU KNOW WELL, TRUST ME'. In my experience, anyone I'm expected to know about is someone that I, well, know about.

Correct. On occasion you'll encounter someone who you've "met" before during a time jump, based on whatever you were up to in that time jump (I'm being vague here, but the idea is that you are up to stuff during that time and presumably doing stuff even if it's not earth-shattering). We'll mention the fact that you know them in context, but try not to take too many liberties outside of that. Most people you meet or know about are ones that you will encounter during active play.

Okay, this alleviates most of my worries.

I'm curious about the crafting. The article seemed too ambigous on whether it was NPCs or the party that did the crafting... And do resources run out, requiring looking for another stockpile?

I was just surprised that we both wanted that information, which really has nothing to do with the preview, at exactly the same time. :)

I must have my brain waves set at max volume today.

Yeah i was surprised too to be honest. No one ever asked about her name, everyone is concerned about the UI, the colours, Bethany and Carver.

I thought i offended you by saying that nobody cares...

Good article, the one thing that caught me by surprise was that Cassandra swears. :o

Not that I'm against swearing... but I just didn't expect it in DA. The writing seemed to be above that.

I picture Hawke repeatedly climbing stairs to the Highttown while Eye of the Dragon plays in the background.

The thing is, most cuss words are really, really old.
Of course, Reality Is Unrealistic in that regard, because we've all been brainwashed, so to speak, into thinking that medieval (and by extension, medieval fantasy) language is very high-sounding. But I'm willing to bet medieval folk were just as profane as modern people.
